I've been searching on here for days and been reading about re-powering some of the engines with a CD Rom motor. I cannot find any write-ups on it. Please help me find it. Do they reuse the gears from the Tyco? If so I may be out of luck.

Jeepman, here are some links, but it sounds like you might have seen these already.

The short version of the conversion is something like this:
1) Remove the brushplate, armature and magnets.
2) Use a dremel tool with a cutter bit to enlarge the space for the CD ROM motor. But don't break the gear axles while you do this. :-)
3) Use a 2mm (or 5/64 inch) drill to enlarge the hole of the pinion gear. If the pinion gear is missing, you can get them from race car hobby sellers, but they will not have a shoulder.
4) Glue the pinion gear on the motor shaft with Loktite
5) Glue the motor using silicone chalking, making sure that the pinion gear is meshed with the idler gear
I've left a lot of little details out, but that is the essence. One of these days if I have time I'll do a complete writeup with pics, or perhaps someone else might be willing to right it up.
Good luck on your conversion and please feel free to ask more questions.

One thing that I left out... some PT motors cannot be converted if the metal has expanded or become weak. You can tell which these are if you have cleaned them up (removed all the dog and cat hair) and the gear and wheels still don't turn. It means that the metal expanded.

I never done it, but I have some idea's and pointers. Redwoods is right, if the block is junk, no motor or remotor help is gonna help. On diesels, you need to make sure it clears and runs through a 18" curve or what ever you are mainly using. I've yet to do one. I suggest getting a junk block or two to expirement on with a Dremel for finer work and a 1/4" die grinder to remove the major stuff. Accurate measurements are a must and so is the center of the shaft and how it and the gear will relate to the other gears.

You can take apart an old CD drive from a computer, if you have one of those laying around. Another choice is eBay (search for CDROM Motor).
I get mine from Goldmine:

That motor is over 1 1/4" in diameter, far too large for most HO locos. These were more typically used as VCR reel or CD carousel loading motors.
