well I tried my first frankentorque on a c630 and discovered not only the shaft too big but the same problem as another member with the center wheel, learning this i got frustrated and popped the 3 pole motor from the shaft out in anger....
but it gave me a twisted idea
grabbing one of my athearn trucks from my scrap box i fitted it onto the old powertorque shaft, to find a pretty good fit, soooooo Im gonna try a modified tank drive and see where that goes.
on a side note whistle stop in pasadna sure wasn't supportive as I asked for gears, worms and shaft parts, the asked "so what's this project you are ding?"
me: "repowering a TycoC630"
them: "best bet is buy a stewart and toss the junk"
me: "not the idea"
them: "well good luck on the bench queen then, when you want to buy a real model locomotive, let us know..."
me: (now frustrated) "if I wanted a real model locomotive I'd ask for a display case....I run trains... now can you get me the parts or not?"
them: "you dont understand we don't carry toy train parts especially discontinued ones."
me: (shakes my head as i finish purchasing what parts i was able to find) gee...thanks for the customer service....no wonder people shop from the internet... (walks out door)
I'll let you guys know how things are going....
just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

I know the frustration. Maybe I just don't understand. I kitbash, customize TYCO, AHM, etc locos. use Mashima motors, Athearn frames, all kinds of things. I get odd looks from folks when I tell them I'm using what amounts to $15.00 worth of detail parts on a TYCO C430. "Just buy a Stewart...etc.", they say. What's wrong with putting effort into an inexpensive train? What's wrong with using your ingenuity to make something you enjoy? Some of these toy locos (And Stewart or Proto HO diesels are not a toy??) are quite scale accurate. When I get done with them, they look decent and run well. (I'm still learning this kitbash stuff.) "What about your time?" It's a hobby.
O.k. that's my rant. You didn't ask for that. Tell us how your drive mechanism works out. Post photos if you can.

I love accuracy, but not at the expense of some "out there where the buses don't run!" modelling. I want an $1100 Divison Point Brass Baldwin DT5-5-20 AND my Tyoc C-630.
It's not an either/or.

Ray, someone did a tutorial about using motors from a Playstation console for the 630, IIRC, which are larger diameter but not as thick, and clear the center wheel.
The laser positioning motor in this assembly may have a thinner profile. Just a guess, though.

I wouldn't call this a failure at all. This was basic R and D, research and development. I got lucky and found a thin cd drive way back in the beginning so it cleared the wheel on the 630, but the motor failed very shortly after it was installed.
Thanks NKP759 for the link, I think I'll get a few of those, they'll handle 16v.

Ok here is the frankentorque that I used (notice the shaft diameter) Next two photos are the v2 version gearing...
Gear installed:
Shaft from the old PT, Athearn gear, and pt gear:
Next step will be to drill a shaft and install a worm gear..

Let me know how they perform if you buy some. I've been holding off due to other projects, but could use some decent pancake motors.

due to some unforseen mishaps (brother rearranging tools & parts and forgetting where he put said tools & parts ) I've temporarily put a hold on frankentorque project one
however I had made progress on another C636 project which is using a model power chassis (dang you Hypo ) this project involved a PH III c630 and one of the more recent 628 chassis
one of the things I also did was replace the motor with an athearn switcher motor,
fortunately all the MP drive lines matched up perfectly only issue motor wise was I mounted it upside down to clear the long hood better.
Also I had to open the floor up a bit so the motor would sink in, right now I'm just doing rough clearing with a dremel as my file set is "stored" somewhere

another oopsie I noticed was the cavity inside the 630. I had to "hog out" not only the mounting lugs but some other lugs or flash near the ceiling but after the main cut on the 630 body and hogging out the ceiling it fit fine.

Here's the body cut, so far everything fits with little to no putty, not bad for only having a saw and a dremel that was accessible...ok that was not within my brother's line of sight

mainly my goal is this: to make a low cost kitbash (under $50) I'm kinda fed up with how locomotives these days are up in the $100+ range...the one thing that still gets me is that the low cost models (I hate referring to them as toy trains) use a doggone 3 pole motor when say for a dollor more in production they couldve gone with a 5 pole...I never understood that.
ah well it keeps me busy right now, and my brother is getting a kick out of watching me, next step (when the weather and my brother frees up time) is pre paint the unit and do the assembly...or find my doggone tools and get back to FT PHII whichever comes first...

I don'y mind cheaper engines myself either. Why pay over $200 for a trumped up diesel with such fragile details that gettin' it in and out of the box break off! I don't remember the last time I bought a new engine! The old Athearn bluebox kit diesels go for under at the shows. Anyways, I like the older trains anywho! Get 'em cheap! Keep us updated on the Yugo diesel remotor!

Gotta love that old C628! The newer version sold by IHC has all wheel drive while the older versions sold by Model Power, AHM and Life-Life were only 8 wheel drive.
Here is my current supplier of "cheap" repower motors. These are nice 5-pole, skew wound, twin shaft motors: http://www.ebay.com/itm/270865177563?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 I hate sharing my sources! But I have managed to squirel away a few of these for a rainy day. I don't think you will be able to beat the price for that kind of motor!! The listing I linked to is over. But he relists these motors every week. Here is what I think is the same motor disected: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Flat-can-motor-has-5-skewed-poles-double-2-mm-shafts-/150714626907?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item23174ab35b

Hypo, did you notice he's also got Hobbytown universals for 2mm shafts? This auction just ended too, but he'll re-list soon.

He must have a huge supply of those motors, since he's been selling them for over a year now.

He does he is the owner of Hobbytown of Boston, he used them as a replacement for the DC-70 open frame motor.
