Hey Ben. I think new that set cost between $20 and $30. Even with inflation, that price is way higher. I'm still looking for a set of those as well so I'm really hoping that the original box drove up the price on that auction. Without the box that set would probably get around $80 so there's still hope. If you find them at a train show you could probably get much cheaper...unfortunately for me they don't come around at many Canadian shows

That listing was an example of what the market will bear. Mint, boxed sets from that era are pretty scarce.

I hear what you are saying but, you mentioned the key:research. If they have time to list it as RARE, then they had to have time to do research. Doesn't take very long at all to look at Completed Auctions on Ebay to get an idea of the actual value of an item. My guess is that most of these outrageous auctions are from "Mr. Haney" and other hucksters. It is funny to me what people try to get away with and it's an education, too. And to talk about the other side of the fence, I have contacted Ebay sellers and politely said things like, "you could get more potential buyers if you listed your item as...." or identified a previously unknown loco for them. I did question an outrageous selling price, when I asked the seller if he misplaced the decimal point. It was an honest question. You should have heard the answer.
Anyway, this is straying from the thread topic. Here is my contribution. This item has been listed two or three times. He says it's "extremely rare". There are 3 on Ebay, right now. One of them is NIB, for $21.99.

LOL But the lack of any spelling whatsoever (masheen? really?) and idiot story are hilarious. I can't believe what our schools turn out these days. My son is only 19 months but he's starting on his ABCs - same as I did at his age, and we work with him DAILY. There is really no excuse for a child to be neglected to that point. Teachers and parents are to blame for that one. Leave the child behind for once! When I was in school, that red pen of shame surely was a motivator!

That link was posted to one of the shortwave / amateur groups I'm on, and we were trying to figure out of the seller was serious or not. I think it was probably written tongue-in-cheek, misspellings included.

I agree about research and looking thru completed auctions for a fair listing price..
The Freezee, by Life-Like...I had this kit in the mid 70's and always thought of it as a favorite. Best I've seen it sell for was around $25 in a sealed box. Def an interesting kit...but not for $99.00......

The McDonalds kit is cool too. I got one on ebay in 2001.. I almost like the Freeze kit more because I had one on my layout as a kid. Today, I think I would have still bought the McDonalds kit even if it wasn't a limited production piece..

I want one too!!
The Freezee kit IS the McDonald's kit Without the sign or the famous Arches Life-Like recalled McD's kit cause they didn't go thru the proper channels to licence the kit So L-L made it into the Freezee kit instead That's why the McD's kit is so high
Also I has noticed the Tyco/IHC Contemporary Series fast food buildings including the 7up plant do go high also Do need those too

Quote[The Freezee kit IS the McDonald's kit Without the sign or the famous Arches]Quote Microbusss
To say the Freeze kit IS the McDonalds kit would not be accurate, excluding the "signs" differences. There's many parts in the kits that are the same such as windows, doors, trash cans, etc. However the building walls to the kits differ in molded exterior detail even in a painted attempt to match. The base (floor) of the two kits are completely different. I don't have my kits close by to compare, but Life-Like used the same basic tooling, but many of pieces are not correct replacement parts from one kit to the other.
Didn't want anyone to be mislead to buy a Freeze for total McDonalds parts.

Walt, I see several things wrong with that auction: "Packaging is in very good condition with a couple small creases"
Am I the only one seeing that large curve in the top of the box and scrapes along the edges?? "International buyers pay actual shipping cost + $15.00 for handling fees.No exceptions."
lolwut.

Here's one that gets me... I'm guessing that the item is right in front of the person listing it.. So let's take a peek at it and get the spelling correct! http://www.ebay.com/itm/TYCO-HO-ga-40-SINGLE-DOME-PETROL-TANK-CAR-WESSEN-315K-/321077475659?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item4ac1b5794b

He spelled "Wesson" right in the description, so probably just a typo. He at least gets credit for the multiple pictures and good description
I personally like the auctions where it's clear the person copy and pasted from another auction. They'll have a small little blurb about the train car, maybe a picture or two of said train car, and then they'll go into great detail about what good condition the vintage blender they're selling is in

$15 handling for international is to discourage international bidders. I hate filling out those customs forms, too, but I hate it less than not selling something.
$15 for that tank car is not the craziest I've seen, although I've had the same one at shows and can't get $4 for it.

Some guy posted on the MR general forum about a large mixed lot offered, for which the seller refused to itemize the inventory and was otherwise reluctant to share info. Everyone told the poster to forget about it, as it was like buying a pig in a poke! Interesting reading!

Wow, That empty box auction is unreal.... $12.66 to buy the incomplete box and have it shipped! I could only justify that purchase price for a very nice box with lable for a HTF rail car..and I'd still be mad at myself after purchase for paying that shipping price...

Marked down from $74.95 to $67.45. Must think it's worth more because of the rust, missing parts and zinc pest.

That guy's a whack job. Speaking of boxes, someone on one of my Yahoo groups pointed out this one he has for sale:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SKI-PFM-BOX-FOAM-ONLY-Rutland-L-1-class-4-8-2-HO-Scale-Pacific-Fast-Mail-Brass-/310595050220
I've taken in quite a few junker RR Docksides, but that one has almost no usable parts. Maybe the drivers, the axle cover, and the coupler assy. are salvageable. Motor's probably rusted solid. And why is there a rusty screw sticking out of a broken dome on top?
I guess some kid wanted it to look like brass... at least I hope it was a kid.

But Ken, the box says collectible. That means it's guaranteed to appreciate.

Here's one that follow the thread:
Two days ago, I am looking thru the HO scale mixed lots on EBay and come across a listing of mixed Kadee couplers, mostly 5's but several others that also would be good to have on hand. As I use them frequently in my rehab work (on models, not humans!), I saw that the bid was 99 cents, so I was interested. Then I saw that the seller was only 20 minutes away from me in Tampa! The postage was listed for about $5, so I sent the guy a message: I offered him $5 flat for the lot and I would drive over to get them, saving the postage. Sounds better than holding out for a 6 day auction that might not net what he hoped for, notwithstanding the postal costs he would incur!
Today, he replied he wasn't interested. Does he think he will get $25.00 for those couplers? It isn't like he has real estate that might get a bigger offer down the road...and there are multiple sources of discount Kadees online.
Anyway, in 3 weeks, the local RR club is having their quarterly swap meet, so I will business to some one there and refresh my coupler supply.

The tan box ones are like $40 on a good day. I wouldn't be surprised if one or two roadnames on the Priemier version will clear $50-$75, but I'd expect the others to also be in the $40 range.
But I totally do not get listings like that anyways. It's a lot easier to find say, 15 guys with $50 to spend, than one guy with $1000 to spend.
