The price, description, and shipping on this is absolutely ridiculous. The description features such gems as "Connected not only by plastic, but by an electrical wire too" and "One wheel is exceptionally dirty". And lets not forget about the $150 price tag on a broken engine and the $85 shipping cost (to Canada anyway ).
Did I mention it's RARE?

quote: Really? How could anyone pay that much for such a beat up old engine. On top of that, how is it rare? Seller of that product, if you're reading this, why are you asking closer to $200 with shipping for a banged up loco? I can get one in great condition for way less online. On top of that, it's not that rare if it is at all. So essentially, "it's rare" my butt! Sorry, but some of these prices are just pathetic.

Just think: If he'd cleaned that exceptionally dirty wheel, it might be worth $175.00.

Even US shipping is high, $14.95 to me and it should be around $7-$8. Those don't weigh 5 lbs. But it's an antiques dealer without a clue what they have. They don't even know the front from the back.

That seller really has no excuse. At first glance I thought he was just ignorant of trains and wasn't going to bother posting here...then the inflated shipping price and use of the word "rare" caught my eye. He deserves his place on this page.

Funny thing about "rare" is that the missing parts would be that much harder to replace if it were really rare. That would make me not want it.

Slot car related plastic structure kits bring big money. He's fishing for someone who doesn't know they sold thousands of these for model train layouts.
I almost picked up what looked like the US-1 version of the Tyco Truck Terminal last week just to see what it would do, a built one for $10, but someone else bought it before I went back for it. I say looked like because it had a PIE sign on the end.

Dear blackforesthobby,
I was going to purchase these diaphragms until I saw the shipping charge. I would still be willing to buy them if you put them in an envelope and slap a .44 cent stamp on it. I would even give you .15 cents to cover the cost of the envelope.

This is nothing new, though. Ebay dealers do it quite a bit actually and there's no reason for it.

Yet another insulting ebay seller. Not only does he list virtually every piece of rolling stock as "rare" , (and he even goes so far as to call a hideous old AT&T F-unit "VERY RARE" despite listing some scratchbuilt cars as merely "RARE" ), but when I clicked on what looked like his only un-pretentious listing.... HOLY SHIPPING, BATMAN!! All his other auctions have reasonable (or at least normal) shipping, but not these: http://www.ebay.com/itm/11-HO-METAL-RAIL-TRACK-BUMPERS-/131376616643?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item1e96a814c3 The worst part is he's got what appears to be, IIRC, a Red Ball chlorine tank flatcar that I'm drooling over. What shall I do? Engage the idiot, or steer clear? http://www.ebay.com/itm/RARE-HO-COLUMBIA-SOUTHERN-42-CHORINE-CONTAINER-FLAT-CAR-/141504367400?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item20f2514b28

How badly do you want it? Heck, go for it - the shipping isn't all that bad and he has perfect feedback.
But those track bumpers. Egad....I cannot even dream up a fantasy reason to charge over $21.00 for shipping. They aren't even that desirable, are they???

I would almost believe that the shipping cost is a Typo, maybe $12.99?? But even that would be too much on the track bumper auction...

I can relate to that. If I held out both hands and you poured money in one hand and water in the other, at the end of 5 minutes I'd have more water than money.

ABOUT E-BAY ! Know what you are doing. I am not a member their anymore. to many misrepresented purchased. If you are just looking for trains it is a good place to get them. Usually nice photos and info. If you are looking for collector trains be careful. Look into what it is said to be. E-bay doesn't allow non-members to contact them if a sale is misrepresented. I like gilbert trains as a lot of you know. And we are lucky to have HOseeker site here on our main forum page. It has good correct info in it. I find from time to time incorrect things being said by list'ers there about what they are offering on auction. A good subject listing there now, with incorrect information is a Gilbert set. Gilbert set ID # 30710. It is a 1961 and 1962 set. A Erie small freight set. It should have locomotive 31036, a 0-6-0 steam engine with the red Erie bay-window caboose. it has the wrong engine and caboose. With a starting price of 175 dollars it could be a bad purchase for some uninformed person who may think it is worth a bid. So be careful about what you bid on anywhere.

My Ebay purchasing has dropped off drastically in the past months. You guys complain about the shipping costs, try ordering from Canada! One item listed on here for examination had a US shipping price of ~$12. Punch in my Canadian Postal Code and that became $29.95 US$. Then calculate the exchange with the C$ @ .85 and you have spent a fortune just on shipping. We don't get a break by shopping "Canadian Listings Only" as prices are listed in US$, so we still get hit with exchange. I usually wait until the last hours of the auction and if no bids I contact the seller and offer Canadian funds if it doesn't sell. Sometimes I get what I want at reasonable prices.
