I seem to be on a tear with ebay lately.
Someone please argue this seller's perspective for me. These diaphragms weigh practically nothing, and this is for ONE PAIR of nothing. Note I am focusing on shipping cost, not the item price, which is reasonable.

I don't mind paying a little more than actual shipping cost - I realize that shipping takes boxes, tape, packing material and fuel to the PO. But as you said, an envelope and a stamp would do the trick on the diaphragms. In my mind, better to charge a bit more for the item and be fair on shipping. Oh well I'm not saying anything that hasn't been said before...

More often than not, it isn't the seller that is driving the price increase. Ebay has changed their standards for sellers, and one of the criteria to keep a passing grade is how quickly tracking information is uploaded. If those diaphragms were mailed 1st Class, there is no automatic tracking, so that is an added charge. Without that add-on, Ebay dings the seller. If you do enough volume on Ebay, and with the USPS, the seller will get a decent discount on the postage. Some sellers pass it on, others use it to pay for the packaging. What is really bad is what some retailers charge for shipping, such as Walthers.

I get what you are saying in principle...as I do a fair volume of selling on ebay myself. ebay says I am a "above standard" or something seller, yet I rarely ship with any tracking whatsoever - I tend to advertise low cost shipping to attract buyers.
Again, I don't mind paying a bit extra for shipping...but over $6.00 to ship a pair of weightless rubber diaphragms goes beyond the realm of belief for me.

Jerry, I saw that auction too. I'm surprised at the bidding, given how rough they are. It looks like you might get one running unit out of the lot. Also a torn up U25C frame that has a good fuel tank casting inside that one shell.

Here are a 3 auctions for mint AHM / Rivarossi steam, and the final bids surprised me. I've never seen the 2-10-2 or Big Boy go for that much. Prices are climbing.

Nelson - yes I am surprised too, and I would guess it will go higher before the auction is over. No one there must have read Ebay 101 I just can't justify throwing $60+ at a box of rough looking shells, although I admit I'd like to have fun with it

Here is a good new addition:

Some people have NO clue!

http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-BALTIMORE-AND-OHIO-TENDER-COAL-CAR-HO-SCALE-8-WHEEL-EUC-/151416565546?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item2341216f2a

Asking $69.99 + $7.90 for a plastic shelled, poorly weathered w/ pealing decal Mantua sloped back tender! IT'S MISSING ONE STEP TOO BOOT! On top of that... he's either trying to make more on the shipping or does not realize First Class is also another form of expedited shipping! The tender w/ appropriate box weighs approx 6 ounces combined and would cost ~$3.50 to ship USPS First Class.

Good gosh, what is that guy thinking? It's not like it's an extremely rare model or whatever. If it had the locomotive at the front, proper pain job, proper weathering, DCC, and possibly complex valve gear, then I would probably say go for it.

I saved these photos from an auction a while back and thought I'd share them just for some chuckles. It's an AHM C-Liner chassis "fitted" to a Tyco GG1 shell. The starting bid was about $20, IIRC.

I particularly like that ventilation hole, the 1/4" long headlight lens, and the use of sheet metal screws to hold the chassis fragments in (I guess pop rivets would have been tacky). No kit here; this is pure bash.

I just found this Tyco Mantua Plymouth diesel for, you guessed it, $66.95 with combined shipping. It's actually in nice shape and apparently works good but still, come on. I could get a Mantua pacific (which is on my most wanted list in model railroading) at the same price if not less at the train shows. Here's the link. http://www.ebay.com/itm/HO-Mantua-Tyco-Plymouth-diesel-0-4-0-switcher-Republic-Steel-locomotive-/221552477515?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item33958e854b

One seriously has to question why the seller for that cut away Tyco/Mantua 2-8-2 didn't post pictures of the actual engine rather than catalog pictures.

C-O-L-L-E-C-T-I-B-L-E. About the blurry pictures, they seem a bit suspicious how blurry it is. It's almost like the seller is trying to hide something about the loco.

Actually, those little industrial Plymouths are collectible, just not worth that much out of the box and with paint chips and a hole up through the front pilot. The side handrails are missing, somebody used handrails from an old time coach on the back, and the front looks like a hand bent piece of wire.

I've never paid over $25 for one in very good shape.

Interesting idea. I wish the closeups weren't so blurry. I'm guessing a Mastadon frame, based on the cylinders, lead truck, and driver spacing. Pacific boiler is recognizable enough, and a modified 4-6-0 / 4-8-0 cab? The rear connecting rods look like they aren't in a straight line in the side shot.

And speaking of kitbashed Tyco locos, here's one that was made from a Chattanooga boiler. http://www.ebay.com/itm/TYCO-2-8-0-STEAM-LOCOMOTIVE-638-VANDERBILT-TENDER-C-6-VERY-NICE-/261600213584?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item3ce8967a50

Judging by the intact smoke unit actuating cam, I'd say this loco is a dummy.

Could be. The seller did stated he didn't test it so it might have been made like that to be in a double header which is not a bad thing to do with broken H0 scale trains.

I don't even know what to say about that

Strangely the $6 shipping upsets me more then the asking price, if that tells you anything

Was browsing and came across this listing.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/HO-Scale-IHC-Transformer-Station-Kit-2015-/251624213451?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item3a95f8cbcb

Nothing unusual until I read the seller's notes at the bottom, which included:

ANYONE WHO LEAVES LESS THEN A 5 STAR RATING OR LESS THEN POSITIVE FEEDBACK SCORE, WILL AUTOMATICALLY BE BARRED FROM THIS SITE.

Wow. He should have just said "YOU WILL BE SATISFIED OR ELSE!!" LOL

You can blame eBay's rules for that, although it's not easy to determine who leaves lower stars unless they give you all 1's, and that can be reported if they give positive but low stars. But beyond that all he can do is block you from bidding again.

The seller pretty much blamed ebay for his policy, I understand his point but to tell you to give him 5 stars or else you are banned goes beyond the pale in my opinion.

Last year I won an auction on a locomotive that arrived at my door very much different from the description. Believe me, I'll give a lot of leeway on things but this was bad. I asked for a refund and got it, although I had to pay for shipping. Last week I bid on a locomotive, got a messge that the seller was "not accepting bids from you." Huh? I checked and lo and behold it was that seller!

Freaky.

I'm in the same boat. a seller had an engine listed as a 4-6-4 and what was pictured was a 4-6-2. I emailed him and asked what exactly was for sale. he changed the picture then wrote back to me quite indignant over my question. Later I tried to bid on another item and got the message that I am banned fro bidding on his items.

That makes absolutely no (bleeping) sense! Unless he just couldn't handle the fact he made himself look like an idiot, and wanted to take it out on you.

What?! At that price, I would expect it to has reversible lighting, DCC fitted, added detail, with the box, in great condition, and with knuckle couplers. It only has maybe one of those.

Way too easy for one bad transaction to screw up your entire eBay account these days, that's why they do it. What they don't tell buyers is anyone with star ratings below 4.8 is considered a bad seller, even though the names on the stars don't indicate anything like that.

Grading systems like that help no one. It discourages you from being honest in rating someone. I want to give real ratings but I don't want to punish a seller that I'm giving an overall positive rating to.
