It was a Mehano product, but it was an ATT offering, not AHM. http://www.ho-scaletrains.net/atttrainsresource/id106.html

As for the tooling and what they were thinking, ya got me. It rates up there with the old Varney / Gilbert F2 tooling for oogliest and least accurate. It has the same drive as the C-Liners, along with their oversized FM trucks instead of EMD's.

They used later versions of the same chassis for an F9 shell with Blomberg trucks that was offered by Life-Like and Model Power, IIRC.

Eh, the Varney is okay, the Marx and the Gilbert clone of Marx are about the ugliest F3 shell.

I suspect the ATT FT shell may have been tooled up to fit an existing chassis for some European loco. Or just so it would run on tight curves. I'm also fairly certain the die was later altered to become an F9 that was somewhat more correct, but I don't recall whose it was that I noticed was very similar in certain details.

AHM's FT was a Kader piece, I believe, it shared drive with early Bachmann diesels. They had a more accurate shell, reasonable enough that an article turned up in MR on kitbashing B-units from them.

I had some coal hoppers on ebay recently, one guy had won two Virginian cars - and then had asked me to wait on sending him a total because I had a couple of other Virginian cars together in an auction he was interested in. So, yeah...I waited.

After all is said and done he wins that auction too. So I send a total, which included shipping of $5.85. Here is his response, verbatim:

"Sharpen your pencil there young fella . The reason I bid on the 2 silver cars is because I thought you could help with the shipping total
Gary
Thanks"

Now...I'm sorry but that just lit me up. Most shipping fees on ebay are out the roof on ONE car. With 4 cars packed well, in a box that is over 12" and weighs a pound...$5.85 is dang good.

I told him at 57, I'm not a "young fella" but I appreciated the humor. Good grief.

You don't get much cheaper than $5.85 for Priority Mail. In fact, I'm not sure you're not already losing money when you figure four cars.

The Roundhouse engine must have been a typo, because I look now and it's on for $10.00.

I don't understand some of that Amazon stuff either. When I wanted an old Lehigh Valley book I found one had sold for around $20. A guy had one for $150 on both sites. I just put in a saved search and waited and I got one for $18, then the next one came on I bid for the hell of it and got it for $10. The next one after that went off for $30 and I let it go. I haven't seen one since.

Considering what those go for, it's not a bad price. Offbeat scheme for those but an offbeat loco anyway.

Whoever painted them did a decent job, and installed Athearn handrails.

Most people buy those for the shells to redo, but I wouldn't want to mess with those they look too nice. Another seller is auctioning C&O and SCL shells alone for $25 a piece I think. Supposedly brand new Bachmann shells he got years ago. Again, not a bad price when I've seen them go for $50-$65 a loco and all you really want is the shell anyway.

Actually, not so offbeat. It's like the American GK E60C-2's they painted for the BN. Out of all the railroads that didn't own them, the BN was most likely to get them but didn't. I remember reading about an experiment BN did with installing an extra-large "crew cab" on at least one GP50 to try to fit the whole crew in the loco to eliminate the caboose. They just opted for an EMD instead of a GE 4-axle.

$17.99 is a little steep for one in this condition. The fuel tank also has a nasty case of zinc rot.
