It's posted as Buy It Now or Best Offer. Which means if you don't like the asking price you can make an offer instead.
I almost always overprice my Best Offer listings because people don't read much, they just hit the buy button, I figure if they make an offer instead I have some control over whether or not there's a sale, I can check to see if they're a person I want to do business with first.

I noticed the cracks, that's why I was saying, otherwise yeah if it was zinc-rot-free it would be a fair price.

For the selective shopper, a rare unique find.

If an new modeler had shown this to me, I would have been gracious to him, but to pay 50.00 would be insane.

I bought my Pizza Hut & Burger King the same week in 2002. They were in separate auctions and sadly I spent $125.00 plus on the two kits... So I guess this auction price is no surprise...

Wow. I wouldn't doubt it a bit. I guess that sealed box really bumps the decimal point! I don't know if it's always been this way or if I'm just noticing, but it seems prices for buildings sealed or open are going through the roof. Just seems strange to me personally to see building prices so comparable to things like running locomotives. Of course with the sealed fast food buildings, there is definite "collector" bump to the prices, but still, I've been looking for roundhouse buildings most recently....and it is absolutely incredible what asking prices are, even for rough shells that are missing pieces. May be something I'll have to bite the bullet on

Huh...looks like the 2 kits are back. Same opened kits, with a Buy It Now for $125.00, with already one declined offer.
Someone must've had an epiphany when it came time to pay for it...

First run Stewart C630s I've seen as cheap as $35 and typically bring around $50. The new Bowser ones put them to shame with all the work already done. But you'll spend at least $100 to get one of them. I just got one of the C430s and it's the best engine I've ever had.

Hey if Bachmann BQ23-7s are going for over $65, then I can believe these things would go for over $190. I'd never pay that much, but I can believe it! "How badly do you want it?"

Have a spare $90,000? Of course this isn't just the layout, it is EVERYTHING he has pertaining to railroads. Kinda sad in a way I wonder what that story is...

Well....if I had $90,000 or so of discretionary funds and had a week to go up and pack it up, I'd do it! That looks like a real treasure trove of "stuff", probably a lifetime worth of collecting and modeling. I'd just like to look at all of it

Hard to say without being there to eyeball everything, but if he really has 1,500 cars and locomotives I would say $900 is a bit low - less than $1 per car? But regardless, what struck me was here's a guy that is wanting to sell EVERYTHING, even the pictures off the walls. I mean I think about what kind of dire conditions it would take to get me to do something like that and I get cold chills

I did a real brief cursory view of the collection a while back and I struggled to find many high value items. He seems to have a lot, but a lot of it is not worth much. The sad part is, I do not think this seller will ever get close to his asking price and seems to be too lazy to do the work that would be required to part it out.
By parting it out they would be assured as close to their asking price as possible. I would not be surprised if there was $90K worth of stuff there, but the amount of time and effort to re-sell everything to get that money back makes it not worth looking at as a re-seller. I fail to see the profit in it and with such bad photos, it is nearly impossible from a distance.
I know with even my collection, I would have 2-3+ years of selling every item one at a time before I would be able to sort through it all. With that said, I am sure I could make between $100-$150K or more, but if I were to sell it all at once, I would be surprised if I saw $10K.

From what I could see, 1500 cars and engines maybe but easily 500 that are dime a dozen low end common stuff that are worth about a buck a shot. Even the better stuff, like the Atlas yellow box engines - I can't tell if they're '70s Roco stuff or 80s Kato drive stuff. The former, $25 on a good day; the latter, $40-$60 on a good day depending on roadname. Even then I've had examples of both I've carried around for several years.
The layout looked to be brass track, too, so you're looking at maybe $2 for every standard switch that comes off intact, less for those that break, and maybe a dime a piece for every good section of sectional track.
The point being that if I'm going to buy into that, it needs to be pretty cheap, because there's going to be a good percentage of stuff with little to no value just as much as stuff with a high value.
Even brass is hit or miss, rare stuff sells, common stuff can sell too but you're talking $100-$200 instead of $300-$1200.
It may not be that he's too lazy to list it out, he's just fishing I think, he tells me he's 80 and won't be around too much longer and probably is trying to turn this into some kind of inheritance. Which, great, but because of the changes in model railroading with the advent of DCC, plus the fewer kids getting into traditional hobbies in general, a collection like that just isn't worth a lot because there's thousands of hours of labor doing inventory, posting, and selling the pieces just to break even selling things only a small number of people still want.

Yeah lvrr - I see your point, and agree with you - looking at it from the perspective of actually going in and making it worth your while. He's probably adding up all the $$$ he paid for it all at retail, then adding interest and a collectibility fee .....and then multiplying by 1000
Even trying to take his perspective for the sake of debate, $90,000 is insane

If you're expecting the buyer to tear out your layout, you'd better drop your $$ expectations tremendously. Imagine what a contractor would charge to do that work. He'd need some club buddies to help him tear it out and help him sell it, but short of that and not parting out the collection $900 would be generous.

They're like common Tyco cars, most worth about a buck a shot at this point. Something out of print and not available on DVD might bring a few more bucks, but you'd have to look up every one of them to find the one or two that guys will fight over.

Then you'd never sell it. The number of guys in the entire world who can afford to pay full retail and then some for a large collection all at once, and might actually buy one that way, you can count on one hand.

FWIW, the engine from that post is a Mantua 0-8-0 circa early 1980s, not a Tyco tender drive. Same tooling for the shell, different chassis, different tender. That's why I asked if anyone ever tried to use a Tyco shell on one - the repair might be cheap.
It seems Mantua got the more detailed of the two tools for this engine, with separate handrail and high headlight, while Tyco kept the one with molded on boiler handrail and molded in centered headlight.

I'm still trying to sort out my Rossi 0-8-0, wondering if it was tender powered. I got a motor for it, and it doesn't match up. The motor has a coupling for a shaft with flats, and the loco shaft seems too long, no flats......I took the top off the tranny, the shaft goes right through the worm drive, no coupling or such. If all else fails, I'll modify the shaft.

Yep I was looking at that one earlier too, it must have been relisted. Would love to bid on it but that price is just insane. And on top of that, it requires some parts/work to get it back to operating shape. Are these bridges really that scarce?
