If you wanted more prototypical smells, you could just use a fairly odorless smoke oil.
Then, if you model diesel or oil fired steam, you could burn just a small piece of plastic milk jug before you run trains. The smell is a very close match. The whole family will love it.
For coal fired steam, a little coal dust in an incense burner should work. Even some little chips of coal in a screen held above a candle should produce just enough aroma.
For wood-fired steam, just hold your soldering iron against a board for a few seconds.
Real locomotives may be great but they don't smell like bacon nor apple pie.

Unless you fry some bacon or bake an apple pie in the firebox.
I tried some of MTH's coal scented smoke, and yeeesh... it just reeked!

If they run on used vegetable oil, they smell like bacon, hamburgers, french fries, or any number of other fried foods, depending on whom you ask! If you're modelling the modern day Grand Canyon Railway, that bacon flavored smoke oil might be just the ticket for the ultimate realism!

I'm not very knowledgeable about the "collector value" of Tyco pieces, there are plenty here that are though, so maybe someone will chime in if it's a super-rare piece that warrants the price. I'd say if you collected certain items and needed just that one last piece of the puzzle to complete a set, it could be

The UP Derrick on eBay has a range of $35 to $50. The box is in average condition and the insert is missing.

I know they are rare, but the bidding on this early 50's Rivarossi Hiawatha Atlantic is nuts with about 7 hours to go. Engine and tender are being sold separately, and currently it's at $525 for the loco and $237.50 for the tender. Probably smarter to sell it piecemeal like this, since it ropes in bidders who only need one or the other.

The Rivarossi Hiawatha routinely sells for around $1,500. A lot of European Collectors are in search of that locomotive. The auction might be expensive, but it not funny or crazy.

Wasn't meant to be; just interesting. I've seen them go for a lot, but not $1,500.

UP derrick sold for $83 -
Makes me wonder what mine is worth, I forget even what road it is, I bought it IIRC in Indianapolis last year for like $10, no box. Just because it's the first one I've seen anywhere that was completely intact.

The Hiawatha loco and tender were won by the same bidder for $565.77 and $364.77 respectively, for a total of $930.54. Based on the buyer's history he appears to be Italian, so with the exchange rate in his favor this one was a bargain.

Don't see that version often, but per the Athearn Guide, it is no more rare than any others. They are all rated "OP3", which is rare. At that price, I think I need to dig out a few of mine to sell. Crazy.

OK I had to share this one. Will someone please tell me what on earth could be the problem with this feedback I left a seller?
"Great products, prices and shipping - A+"
It's an honest assessment. I like his products, he has decent prices and his shipping is always very prompt.
Sooo...here's what ebay had to say about that:
"Your Feedback comment contains prohibited words or Web addresses. Please revise your comment."

Why the hell would you want the box from a plastic kit, tho? It's not like you can store the assembled model in it.

The 0571P Lionel HO box is extremely hard to find, that is why someone paid $1225.

I understand it's rare but I just can't believe anyone would pay $1,000 for that. More like $50 maybe.

Five of the bidders in the Lionel Box auction enter bids of over $1000.00.
That is the most, I have seen a Lionel HO box go for.

About 7 years ago a plain corrugated box with a plain white label on it from an uncatalogued Sears Lionel set sold for $2200. I had visions of the guy's wife coming across it and cutting it up for recycling.

That's yet another good reason how unbelievably much people will pay for stuff in general.

I'm guilty of paying crazy prices for something I really want. A few times I actually felt stupid and regretted the big bid...
