Have just been looking at Tyco pieces a lot closer in the last week, especially locomotives. They seem to be creeping up the price scale here too. Was at a favorite antique store in Louisville this past weekend that usually has a lot of nice train stuff, their Tyco prices had skyrocketed. Then again, their prices were higher across the board on other brands too.

I started collecting these Walthers Superliners after we rode the Amtrak Empire Builder last May. They break all my rules for spending money on pieces that don't move under their own power, even when you can occasionally find them for $40 but I likes em
I can't figure out this auction though: http://www.ebay.com/itm/360800405643?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649

4 bidders at 39 bids... you could look at how the bidding went on... looks quite brutal!
Ya work so hard, then have it slip away...

I don't have a one track mind. It depends on the turn-out. "I love your catenary!" Is that a power-trip or just another pick-up line?

wow 1,299.00 for a tanker? must be made of pure silver. I have 3 on my shelf. If I can get that price then I can pay for christmass. I only hope it was a typo, but then with a name like tiffany you never know.

I was stunned at this auction result:
RIVAROSSI HO 4-8-8-4 BIG BOY BOILER FRONT
/tyco/forum/uploaded/NickelPlate759/20131214151532_RR BB Bolier Front.JPG
Starting Price $19.00
Winning bid: $55.00
http://www.ebay.com/itm/251398684835
Sure, it's the nice graphite front from the 90's version, but this is 1/4 the price of what the whole loco generally brings. If I ever do sell my Big Boy, it will be piece by piece.

Nelson, Crazy! I got a BUNCH of the Rossi 2-10-2 fronts. ones I've casted. and I'm pullin' $10 each, or well.......was! AND that's about a buck an change profit. from costs and time of casting......HOWEVER, the brass ones of the same thing are going upwards of $50 EACH. so that Rossi Big Boy/Challenger front, is getting more and more rare......So the people needing/wanting them for whatever reason is why..... its not "cost" no more. its demand, how "bad" do you "need" it? you know?
At this point, EVERYTHING is worth more these days,.....................in pieces!!!!!

This is insane. Granted I know that there were only 10 of the REAL Family lines BQ23-7... but this is a mass-produced Bachmann. Just a few weeks ago the Family Lines barely broke $30 for a sale price and the C&O was low $20s. Now they're both into the $40s and beyond, with about 10 hours left in the auction. I was ready to swallow my pride (and train budget) and throw $40+ at one just to get rid of this crazy itch, but DANG....I have to keep reminding myself that it's $40+ for basically a shell that I'm going to strip and repaint/re-decal and put on another power chassis....do I really need a BQ23-7 that bad?

John,
The value of something is the price somebody's willing to pay for it, which is true for any of this stuff. Demand + rarity = higher prices. I think that boiler front auction may be an outlier, though.
Get a load of the overspray on that Family Lines unit.

Yeah and I am painfully aware of that right now . I let a couple of these go because I wasn't willing to pay over $30 for a Bachmann that I was going to redo, so now that I was going to throw sanity to the wind and hose over $40 on one....the demand goes up! Oh well...my paypal account is thanking me
Yep the overspray is pretty bad on that Family Lines. I was going to go a little higher on that one until I zoomed in on it, then it dawned on me the C&O would strip just as easily

Nelson, Your right! Its all how much do "you" want it.....
Jerry, that BQ23-7, they do NOT strip easy......I've painted 2 of them, both units I got, were in Chessie, (NEVER had them) so one got CSX paint, the other got Family Lines paint with a CSX road number......BOTH now have Athearn frames powering them!
Crazy? I don't think I paid $20 total for BOTH units bought about 5 or 6 years apart from each other.. last one, I got for 8 bucks, I think it was either 8 or 10 dollars I paid.....

My first one bought, and got CSX paint. and detailed, with Athearn power....

Family Lines model, custom painted as well with CSX roadnumber. BOTH units, came to me as Chessie units! The Family Lines unit, is a dummie with a brain, (Has operating forward and reverse lights, in both DC and DCC!

John those are real nice units, I remember finding them on another thread and they kind of rekindled my interest in those particular locos. Beautiful paint and detail work.
BTW, that C&O unit today? Went for $56.00.

Ray, you just found a live unicorn. Jim H. on the vintage group thought it may have reached the pre-production stage; just wish he could see this. Interesting solution using planetary ball bearings between the motor shaft and the nylon bushing to drop the speed. It might run reliably with some of those PVC hair bands installed.
Also interesting that the tender drum axles are smaller diameter than those that made it to production. The tender floor looks solid, though, so I guess they didn't try powering the tender on this particular sample.
$3000 is pretty steep, but it is one of a kind.

The auction description pretty much explains what happened to the attempt to build a Hi-F drive steam engine. If not there then the photo from the Greenberg's Athearn guide included with the listing.

I almost had heart failure and stared at the photos in amazement. I wish more info about this particular "mock-up" was available. I wonder if the planetary ball bearings were an after thought to overcome one of the problems with the design or if it was part of the design from the start. I see alot of similarities between this mock-up and the first production run example I have. I also see alot of things that were not the same like the headlight bulb and mount, brake shoes, boiler backhead in the cab and the pilot truck mounting. I wouldn't pay that much for it either but I'd like to tinker with it and try to get it to run. (it may have run by the looks of the wear on the wheels but not a viable candidate for production)

Well to put a lid on this story and my whining about ebay, I finally scored a BQ23-7 for a more realistic $15.00 . I think it was pure luck and timing, everything about the loco was mentioned on the title EXCEPT "BQ23-7" - I only found it because I was bored and entered "L&N locomotive ho scale" in the search box a couple nights ago It's missing a front handrail and the description says it "clicks when running" - none of which is an issue.

AND SADLY, Ray... I had two Tyco 630s that we're dropped on the ground when I got my boxes from storage not long ago! A box fell out of the rear hatch of my Trail Blazer when I raised the door. They come apart but I'm pretty certain I can get 'me back together!

I thought I had seen a ghost. I wonder if he'll be dropping the asking price.
An overall 29:1 reduction is nothing to sneeze at, but this prototype depended on only 2 bands, so there had to be a lot of slippage. I noticed they roughed up the brass tubing on the shaft (and also that the magnet, poles, & armature are larger for more torque). Their diesels had 4 bands doing the work, so no wonder they tried extending the shaft into the tender.
Can you imagine the average user having to disassemble the loco -- including the side rods -- to replace melted bands every 6 months? If the tender was also powered, then multiply that frustration. It would have been a black eye for them worse than the Chattanooga.
Hard to believe this Rube Goldberg design could be cheaper than a worm, axle gear, and some universals.
For posterity:

You may not of had to disassemble much to change the belts. If you look at where the belts would have gone through the chassis, they end up between 2 drivers. Looking at the wear patterns on the inside of the bottom cover between each driver, it looks as though there was a drum that the belt went around, that would have wedged the belt between 2 of the drums of the axles by the tention of the belt. Of coarse these drums would have fallen out onto the layout every time the belts broke. Just a guess from looking at the photos. I think further experimentation is in order.

Good eyes. I never would have noticed that wear. Those rollers would have given extra reduction [Edit: on second thought, they wouldn't) and made band changing a lot easier, but it was still reliant on the grip of only 2 bands on the drive shaft. I assume those rollers are long gone since they aren't in the photos.
I have the first actual production version with the gear on the rear drum axle, and I've gotten it to run very nicely. It took a lot of tweaking. I was going to spring for a magnet replacement, but moved on to other projects. I still think the final version of this loco would have been a winner with the Jet oval magnet motor, which was a lot stronger than the Hi-F.

The "living unicorn" never sold. I'd love to have in my collection! Here's a great looking steamer for the rails!

I tried to post this one a couple days ago, when it said $2,500, but seems he's corrected it to $25, which is still about 5 times what I'd pay for it if I needed one! http://www.ebay.com/itm/Mantua-Early-All-Metal-Tender-in-Factory-B-O-Lettering-/231118328797?pt=Model_RR_Trains&hash=item35cfb9d3dd
