I once almost threw out a small TOOTSIE TOY fire truck (I think that was the brand). I had my hand with it hovering over the trash and almost let it go. Decided to list it instead. Started it off at $4.99 and it sold for almost $40! Who knew?

Oh yeah, I hear you! I put a handful of old Tootsietoys from my childhood on ebay about a year ago - these things were WELL played with, most all of them repainted by me at least once or twice - and I did VERY well on those auctions. There are markets for everything I think.

Here's one I forgot to post. A rare (one time when this word is appropriate) 1948 - 54 Rivarossi Bakelite Hiawatha Atlantic.
www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-HO-RIVAROSSI-HIAWATHA-ATLANTIC-4-4-2-VERY-RARE-/190915924645

Starting bid: $100
Final bid: $1,238.13
A matching coach went for $123.50. The buyer of the loco is in Italy, so he paid just under 900 euro.
EDIT: Why do the image tags keep disappearing from uploaded images?

Here is perhaps the highest I've ever seen a Tyco item sell for. It has a lot going for it (Southern paint, original set box, chrome!!!), but still, WOW! $836.99 for a Tyco set...

When something hasn't been made in 30-40 years and guys want to fix the one they've had since they were kids, you get a market for parts from guys not smart enough to buy whole engines to cannibalize.
Actually, in the case of newer stuff that sees short runs cannibalizing is the only way to get parts, as they only make so many and that's that.
Every old Rivarossi piece I sell usually goes back to Italy for good money, I have no trouble selling decent stuff - I had a 4-4-2 I cobbed together the tender frame with some AHM parts and it went for over $100. Of course a couple weeks later I hit on a correct tender, but the buyer wasn't interested, so it's here somewhere. I think I paid $40 for the complete engine and tender shell in an original box from roughly 1959.

I left an 80 foot standard AHM coach on a table by a window in the West Texas sun. I never found a prototype 80 foot sway back passenger coach that looked like that one. Oh well. Regards John

Rivarossi's styrene had a pretty low melting point. That also explains why the motor always melted the plastic mount in their Pacifics.

Tyco pieces will do the same thing if left in the sun too long. Somewhere here I have an Amtrak F7 that's more banana-shaped.

love the description, “Condition Rating C-5 = Good: This is an antique train in vintage condition. It is a 1930's model, when John Tyler started producing "O" gauge products. As such it will arrive with some minor imperfections on its chassis, such as signs of patina, surface rust, surface scrapes and scuffs, a partially missing window frame on one side of the engineer's housing, some rust on the wheels and a need for a good cleaning. It is a nice antique piece and should clean up quite nicely. Please see photos for full visual details. We have no way to bench test this product. It is an "AS IS" sale.

“Condition Grading C6 = VERY GOOD: The undercarriage is in pretty decent condition. The wiring appears fully intact, along with the front light, but we have no way of bench testing this item. All the locomotive's pipes and parts appear present. The majority of the refurbishment appears as though it will come in the locomotive's outer finish. There are some scuff and scratch marks and some minor surface rust on it. Overall the locomotive is in very good condition for being 82-years of age. We might have some rust too at that age!”

I just saw that 0-6-0 Ken and was heading to this forum to post about it. Did you read the whole advertisement for it? Wow; maybe they think that a lot of wording will add some provenance to it and help jack the price up to four times what it's actually worth.

I posted those shells many pages back. They still haven't sold.
Neither have the AHM C-Liner shells (which are common as crabgrass in SF... they must have cranked them out by the bazillions). $500 for both lots, unless he gives you a two-fer.
