Years ago I would contact a seller once in a while who had a ridiculous price on an item. Now I can't force myself to do it. I always got a story back that was based on hope, misinformation or stupidity. I found that after the reply, nothing had really changed so that equaled that I was just wasting my time... all for nothing...

eBay's running so many promos now it's free for her to list it over and over and over, so it will likely be posted until they give up.

I lost my dad to Alzheimer's in 2009. He ended up in an excellent facility that dealt specifically with the disease, and they had a practice they called "therapeutic lying," which was essentially telling very positive little fibs to calm the residents when they got agitated. It worked very well, and this sounds like just that sort of thing.
Congrats on finding the saddest auction in history, Ken.

It was at $32.50 with like five hours to go.

This is... different.
cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390660027098

So it's got an MU-2 Blomberg truck powering the tender, a pair of drivers from an early Rivarossi Dockside, and steamchest from a New One steamer. John, this is your chance for a set of slide valve cylinders!
I can't believe the bidding is up to $66.50.

The PURR Lines were featured in MR or RMC a couple of times over the years, seems like the guy who had that layout was known for quirky things.

WOW! I have to say Nelson, I'd have to pass, the cylinders look more like those off a Reno. Not a Dockside.....the slide valves in brass were I think the older AHM/Rivarossi models.... the newer ones were plastic!, pictured look to be brass!
Sadly, I'm not sure, I could justify over $30, never mind over $66!

Well, whaddya noes?! trc.trains.com/Train%20Magazine%20Index.aspx?view=SearchResults&q=purr
Based on this photo of his layout, his work was quite a bit better than the model in the auction. It could have been someone's attempt to emulate him.

John, I never said the cylinders are Rivarossi. They are from a New One 0-8-0 / 2-8-0.

Nelson, those cylinders look to small to be off a 0-8-0/2-8-0.....maybe.....they look like the older, late 1800's versions that were used on the Rivarossi Reno and others, even the Bowker as they look possibly made of brass..... they don't look die cast from the picture, but it is difficult to tell for sure!

John,
The cylinders were no doubt undersized for these locos.

Note the it has the same valve "pimple" atop the cylinder. The parting line is less visible on mine than the set on the PURR loco.

It's nice to know people are flush with so much disposable income.
Now here's a little tutorial for anyone selling on eBay. If your loco is a little dusty, just run it under the faucet and snap a few pics of it (black nail polish optional).
www.ebay.com/itm/RIVAROSSI-MSADE-IN-ITALY-HO-BALTIMORE-AND-OHIO-98-/161113240426

Or maybe this Dockside just fell off the dock, which would explain the missing cylinder. Don't forget to point out it's in "great shape for its age."

you guys.....
Nelson, those domes....I was in the thought process of making domes, for a Western Maryland 2-8-0, when I remembered yours! BUT the issue is that black "base" that's part of the boiler, isn't it? See, the Western Maryland, in a lot of cases had "special" parts that no one seems to make in HO scale so I'm sort of, going to make an attempt, to make them, myself.....
I keep looking at that New One Models 2-8-0, and those cylinder are awfully small for that locomotive!

I have never seen an auction as crazy as this one... Two auctions offering a chassis and the other with the body of a Tyco switcher engine. Really? Just snap the body on and sell it as a complete engine!! Auctions 331050518287 & 231079265485...

Why not just put the body on it and selling it as a complete switcher? I personally won't make a game out of making one item two auctions.

Walt, The phrase I like to use: "The sum of the parts is often worth more than the whole."
As for selling it in to auctions... I can not blame the seller for trying. I think however the best a seller could hope for is ~$8 for the whole engine. If he can sell each and make $1-$2 more, then good for him. His auctions here are not that ridiculously priced as some I have seen.
I have found selling on eBay, for example, if I were to sell a complete Mantua 2-8-2 with the tender in working condition, the average price I get is ~$36 for a open gear model and ~$50 for an enclosed first generation model. Occasionally I see them sell double that, but for some reason, never mine. However, I start taking the parts off that are intact and in good-great shape and list them individually.. I see the following averages:
Cab: (Plastic): $8 low $11 HI (metal): $10 Low $22 HI (If I list a BIN metal cab at $20, they all sell)
Pilot: (Plastic): $8 low $25 HI (metal): $15 Low $28 HI (I have seen a plastic cab sell for $40 once and it was missing one side step)
Chassis w/ valve gear attached and motor: Newer open axle gear chassis: ~$36 on average. First generation chassis: $50 low $70 HI (I have listed several nice clean 1st gen chassis at a BIN of $69.99 and they all sold.)
Valve Gear Alone: $10-$15 w/ $20 HI
Drivers alone: $10 - $15 HI
Motor: $8-$10
Tenders: (Plastic): $8 low $14 HI (metal): $11 Low $20 HI
Shell: I throw in a pile of 10+ and sell them bulk. They usually sell for $10-$15 at ~$1 each.
So to summarize a Mikado can net:
(Plastic): Low: $61 HI: $87 (Metal): Low: $87 HI: $141
So.. If I sell it whole, I will average $36 to $50, Part it out and the lowest I will average is $61. Seems like a no brainer to me. You see, I sell and try and maximize what I get, not for greed, but to allow me to be able to buy more trains for my collection. Selling is the only way I can afford to buy any and if there are people out there willing to pay, I'm willing to sell. Most of those prices I quoted I start as $9.99 auctions and the buyers bid them up. I only set the BIN prices for the parts I know I have sold in the past at the prices that items sold at previously.

Yeah I understand all of that but really, to fool around selling a Tyco SF switcher is not worth my time.

Walt - to each his own, but if simply taking that Tyco switcher apart and making more money than as one piece brings my railroad budget more $$, then it sure seems like time well spent. Granted, it may be irritating if I was a buyer looking for the single switcher, but that's another perspective entirely. I used to toss all my horn-hooks and plastic wheels in the trash as unworthy of my time until I noticed there is a definite market for parts of all types. I still think they are trash, but if someone wants to buy them from me I will take a minute or two and sell them
