So one of my hobbies during the warmer months is autocrossing (bottom part of this page see my post http://www.tycoforums.com/tyco/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=6002&whichpage=2). Just so happens my friend's layout where all my stuff is currently living also races with me. One night I jokingly mentioned "Wouldn't it be funny if we built a autocross course on the layout?". Fast forward a few weeks later, I see some $1 hotwheels cars that look like autocross racers, so we buy them (A Datsun and a Mustang). Still no intention of making a race course, we thought they looked cool if a bit out of scale for HO. His Dad caught wind of our idea. One week later, he attached this to the layout.

Still a work in progress (needs more chalk lines added). But its awesome looking. His Dad made each cone by hand using the tips of wooden dowels glued onto a base and painted orange. Then he ordered the wood and slapped it on the layout. Even has a timing & scoring trailer. Some more pics...

The mustang hangs a corner (notice the wheel lift!) Meanwhile a vintage car club in the background looks on.

I bought this Datsun because I just loved how it looked. Here it is streaking into the finish, a porsche 911 in the background gets ready to leave the line.

Old meets new, Bessemer & Lake Erie 525 pauses to watch a new GTI make a pass.

If anyone has anything even close to this on their layout, I wanna see it NOW haha

Looks great!

I've thought of modeling a drag strip on my layout.

That is AWESOME! I love the idea of the handmade cones too.
