Okay, here's a couple of things I think when I see that.
A. You MUST tell me how to do that. B. That dashboard looks like it belongs to the coolest car ever...your Granada I presume?

Heh heh... while the dash is similar to what the Granadas' were, the car is not a Granada... but admittedly probably even cooler:

My 1975 Lincoln Continental Mark IV, which I began restoring this summer after it sat abandoned in my in-laws' farm/barns/garage and derelict for 17 years. Everything wrong with American cars of the time, and the 1970's in general, is on full unapologetic display in that car - I love it!
As for the "MP3-Track".... I custom-designed it by gutting a useless (aged) cleaning cartridge, then looking around for an FM transmitter that seemed small enough to fit inside. I carefully disassembled the transmitter down to its guts, modified the cartridge shell to allow it to fit, then transplanted the guts inside. I wired in another battery holder from a store POS (Point-of-sale) display. Then I picked an MP3 player that was the correct size and form factor - and a matching color too, bonus! Total project cost was about $30 and a couple hours. Placing and cutting the holes for the switches to fit through was the trickiest part.
Since the transmitter essentially sits inside the receiver, there is normally very little interference, and what there is should go away once I properly service the radio itself.

Ohh I thought maybe the 8-track player was actually picking up sound from the MP3 player. Pretty neat idea with using a radio transmitter!
"Every girl crazy 'bout a sharp dressed man..."
Kidding!
By the way, if that car wasn't as hard on gas as I bet it is, it's what I would want to drive EVERYDAY.
How can you not love one of those 70's land yachts?

Hah, that photo was a rare special-op shot. I normally choose a more incognito "Joe slob" look when conducting my, um, business affairs
The car has got a personal best of 14MPG a few times over the summer; in normal/city driving i figure it closer to 9-10. I came *this close* to busting over a c-note at the pumps the first time I filled it up.
So yeah, that car's been a big reason why the train budget has been largely nonexistant this year (well, that and the new house).
But I gotta tell ya, it has been a blast. Fun to drive for all the wrong reasons. Gets reactions and stares everywhere it goes... mostly smiles and nods of approval. My friends adore it, my daughter loves it, it gets us into cruises and other events, and just this past weekend while driving it back to the farm for storage, a well-dressed professional businessman in a Lexus offered to buy it (like the true idiot I am, I said "no thanks")!
It still needs quite a bit of work but for a weekend/summer hobby, it's great.
Now I just need a garage.

Thats awesome Tony! Classic cars are , well , just that, " classic "! The console looked to me like it was from an ex-Conrail SD-60M. I bet that thing rides like a pillow?
Also nice touch on the MP3 player. You have some McGyver like chararistics.
Is this thread about our other hobbies? If have a couple that have pushed collecting to the back burner for now. My other main hobby is amature pyrotechnics. With Newyears coming up I have been busy building for the midnight hour.

The "why not" is because it's a model train forum. However I haven't gotten any complaints, can't say if the other Moderators have. There's been no meaness or bad taste jokes, puns etc. so I get unless Todd pulls the plug, have at it....

Eh, no complaints received or originating here.
Frankly, it's refreshing to see train buffs who have other things that the rest of the world might interpret as a "life".
so sally forth and tally ho and all that good stuff...

I've kinda tried to make it clear that I know this has not a thing to do with model trains. I never thought it would get so big when I started this topic.
If anyone has a problem, please by all means get rid of this topic.

Then I haul them around to shows on this...

There's gonna be a bit of a celebration with family members over the weekend, I'm really looking forward to that.
I've been meaning to check out ELO's earlier stuff; how could I ever miss this good little rockin' song?

Oh, maybe I'll let ya in on some other hobbies of mine while I'm at it.
So, we have model trains and record collecting, I also have an old RCA Videodisc machine.

 My grandmother found it for me at a yard sale, and I fixed it myself. I put a Tyco F-9 above one of the movie discs to compare sizes. Now if I could just find some other movies for it....
Over the summer, I dig bicycles out of the trash and fix them up. The last few years I've volunteered with a group that fixes donated bikes and gives them to families who are down on their luck. In fact, my pride and joy in all things bicycle, my Peugeot, was found in the trash too:
 I remember the day I raced a small freight train on this thing. Needless to say, EMD knows how to beat a guy on a bike in a race.
Before model trains, my favourite thing to do was build 1:24th scale model autos. I've also made one absolutely terrible fighter plane, a great UH-1 Huey, and one pretty good jet interceptor.

 I've got a few kits waiting to be built, but since my local Wal-Mart stopped stocking a basic selection of Testors paint and glue, my materials have run dry.
I do a bit of railfanning here and there, but the railroad workers around here give you a bit of a look even if you don't have a camera in your hands.
 I must make a chart of when the trains roll through, and try to come up with an average time, maybe I'll take photos on weekends or something.
I like to play the YS Flight Simulator now and then, it's a free program that is well worth the money.

 It's not as good as say Microsoft Flight Sim, but hey it's free and there's loads of planes available for free download too.
And that's it, other than reading, and I'm sure more than a few people would tell you I'm a good cook...

Well, An F-106 Delta Dart no less! Perhaps other than the Supermarine Spitfire the best pure Interceptor the world has ever known!? (Well the CF-105 Avro Arrow would have blown it's socks off if the idiot Canadain Gov't of the day had chosen to build it instead of buying Bormac missiles!)
Ok, rant over...
MM, interested in vintage model airplane kits? I have some real odd Buggers, including one Hasegawa "Egg" plane a Mig-15, some odd Vacx-forms as well. Have to open some boxes and a 50's Jetex Balsa Rocket powered flying model of a F-7U Cutlass:

Yeah the "Sexy Six" ( ) was one of my favourite models I've ever built. Funny, I noticed it at Zellers, who has never stocked ANY model kits for at least 10 or 15 years. Even then, it was hidden in with some discount pool equipment...
By the way, the Arrow is one of my favourite aircraft of all time. I wrote an essay about it for history class, I know it well. A very, very big mistake, cancelling such an amazing program.
As much as I would love to take your offer on those kits, I haven't anything to trade at the moment. And I'm trying not to spend any money on myself right now. Christmas shopping, ya know...
...and maybe a few games of pinball at the arcade. I guess that kinda could be a hobby, I hold the top 3 high scores on the Star Trek one...anywho.
I'll get back to ya after Christmas on those kits. Maybe there will be some money left in the aftermath.

"ruined" is a understatement...but many WH collectors "bow there head in reverence" to the "great and powerful TORO" because they provide them with the occasional part for there "C" series machine.
I assure you I am not one of them.
I only collect the 1955 thru 1961 models and have a 1963 model that gets used to cut grass and plow snow (not a showpiece)

Hey, the "it's supposed to be just a train forum" guy found a common side interest after all! HOORAY!
Nice models, Matt. I have a small collection of 1/32 and 1/24 autos that maybe I'll post up here some time - I even have that same International Scout kit but haven't built it yet.
As well as a ton of old appliances and electronics I've fixed and used/and/or passed along. I refurbed old PCs and donated those for a time too. You and I have a lot in common it would seem.

Hmmmmmmm! Where to start! I`ll try and keep it on the same topics that have already been brought up but may vere away a tad! First off that Bell Huey UH-1D model you have built MM looks awesome! Is that the 1/32 kit from Revell?
Here are some of my Bell Hueys! ( I would give my right nut to fly in one some day!) Both of there are MRC kits , 1/32 scale.

 This is my Momgrahm 1/24 Bell UH-1B model from the latest run of this mold! Its a monster!

 Heres another kit in the works. Its a AMT/ERTL Ford L9000 Snowplow and its not for the beginer I must say. I`ve been working on it for over a year of and on.

 NOW! Onto my other hobby which has been taking front seat due to the season which takes trains and models and puts them on the back burner. FIREWORKS! Yes , I am a amature pyro. I make a lot of my own salutes and M80`s since they were banned due to the child protection act. However , I am no longer a child hehehehe! I bout this one for New Years eve coming up! I thought it looked cool because you`ll see why in the next picture! This is a 19 shot repeater. This is why I liked it! Yes , that is a tattoo on my left arm! The Punisher rulz!! Last but not least here is my stash for the upcoming New Years bash! It includes 2 reloadable mortar kits , several helicopters and some tanks! The big one is a 9 shot 3inch tube rack (dont ask how much it cost either!)

Hey:
I forgot to say WINDY cause I've never flown in one or seen one flying with the doors closed.
My experience was in the Canadian Army in the late 70's and fighting Forest Fires in Northern Ontario as part of a "Helitack-Unit Crew" Fire fast response team. We were based out of Geradlton north of Lake Superior. I can tell you the limit for those Huey's was 15 men including a crew of two not the 17 we'b hoped for when a forest fire is surrounding you and the air is hot & dry!

Some of the automotive models I've built and/or modified:
This one needs no intro:

1/24 Polar Lights kit from 2002; only cast in white, chrome, and clear (meaning I painted everything but white parts of the body). I made the body faithful to the movie, but painted the interior like the cartoon.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
2001, 1/24 Classic Metalworks Chicago Police Ford Crown Victoria:
Pre-painted in white, which was important for me since I had no airbrush at the time. But I handpainted all the trim and the interior (markings are decals).
Unfortunately, I lost a taillight in the move.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This Matchbox 1/64 1988 Ford Thunderbird has been modified to more closely resemble my dear but forlorn friend in its current state:

Even the wheels are somewhat accurate. The "garage" is a current Fresh Cherries diorama, and is inspiration for what I would love to have someday...
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Some of my rare 1/32 Lindberg 1975-77 Ford Granadas:
The red and white one is what we had when I was a kid; I sanded the roof to make the Landau trim and added the '78-80 "Twindow bar" (which I actually hated as a kid back there).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A Burago (Italy) kit of a 2001 WRC Focus:

I love WRC racing. I made custom decals to change the number, add the STC as a sponsor, and of course change the drivers . The nice inside joke places my wife as the navigator... we always nearly kill each other when this is the case in real life
And it's always nice to finish something better than the box art...

But I still need to make an antenna.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally, some custom 1/64 models as a throwback to my NASCAR fanatic days:
Here's the 2008 hauler with its 1993-edition paper-and-marker "prototype". Amazing what 15 years' worth of technology and skill can do, eh?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
There are more, but the above is plenty enough.

It's 1:72 or something like that, I threw away the box. It's by Italeri. By the way, that snowplow is an AMAZING kit! Looks like it will be a great model when completed.
I would also give anything to fly in a Huey. The distinct sound, the proud history...one remarkable chopper!
Great race cars GIC! And I would love to find one of those die-cast Ghostbusters cars they released a few years back. But I suppose if I wanted a model of it I would need to find bits and pieces like you did.

MM: From the pics it looked bigger than a 1:72 scale. You did a outstanding job on that thing. After the holidays I`ll probly start work on the snowplow kit again when time allows. Its been a real pain in the arse getting it where it is so far. Most of it is finished and just needs to be assembled.
GIC: Nice models. What did you use to weather the tires and wheels?

Chalk, dirt, drybrushed paints and/or "weathering powder". I don't remember for certain; it's the same stuff I've used to weather trains at any rate.

I once had a good number of Burago models, but I found them kinda toy-like and one-by-one they were kinda passed on to my kid brother. You did an excellent job of one, I had a BMW M3 that was very similar.
Anyway, here's the real reason for this post.

Yeah my uncle found me some more 8-tracks. CCR and a couple of "dumb songs" type tapes from K-Tel. Jeez, it seems all K-Tel has ever done is whipping out these crappy compilation albums by the truck-load...at least one of these has Disco Duck on it. Now I'm happy.

Boy oh boy, I got a late Christmas present this year...but probably one of the best.
We were visiting my grandparents earlier today, and I don't even know how it came up, but we got talking about my stereo and how I like to collect records.
Well...my grandma happened to mention that my dad's and my 4 uncle's old records were still in the basement...and that I could take ALL of them!
There's a good number of LP's, but I guess they really collected singles, because in the end I have roughly 150 now. Maybe even closer to 200.
Anyways, here's my favourite albums outta the bunch:

And of course, there's many, many 45's I'm gonna listen to, but I found these ELO ones in the box:

Yikes. It may be time to get a better camera.

Okay, before I start: I am wondering, does anyone actually read these? I just like to think maybe somebody is getting a kick out of my record-collecting advenutres...
Now, on with the show.
Today was a very good day, we went out to Halifax where the hobby shop is, and a couple of good record shops. I had some Christmas money burning a hole in my pocket, and a Revell model kit back home waiting for some paint.
So, first we went to the hobby shop, picked up some paint, and I can tell ya right now the kit I'm building is gonna be great. It's a Douglas SBD Dauntless if you were wondering.
Then, we headed off to the record shops, and I found some very good ELO gems.
But first, here's Kansas singin' their greatest hits:

I thank whoever mentioned them here...I'm glad I checked out their stuff!
Two new ELO albums...I only need 3 more to complete my collection!

Singles abound...

And one very special disc, I think choochin3 mentioned it...

What's so special? It's purple!

Neat-o, huh?

Well that's all for now...by the way choochin3, have you added anything to your collection recently?

Well, Here's my Other Hobby--If you turn away from my layout, you will find this monster filling the rest of my garage--'76 Mercury Cougar, 351 Windsor, 40,000 original miles--I can post a better pic if anyone is interested.

Looks pretty cool...
The Mercury Cougar is one of my favourite cars, although I think by 1976 it had morphed into a luxury model. The 1970 Cougar Eliminator however:
 Is a little bit different.
Mercury Cougar, Pontiac GTO, heck I even like the AMC Javelin of the early 70's...
Anyway, that's a pretty cool lookin' car, I'd like to see more. Maybe a good partner to GIC's Lincoln?

Well, I don't have a vintage car collection or anything , so I guess the closest thing I've got to another hobby is music. Similar to Matt's hobby, I'm building up a collection of CD's...mostly punk and metal so far. And then there are the guitars...

My two Squire Strats, the P-bass, and of couse my Fender Tele. I've got a pair of trombones kickin around somewhere too

Cheez, that guitar with the Canadian flag all over it is freakin' sweet.
Also, I know nothing about guitars, but I thought the Stratocaster was made by Fender as well? Bahh I'm probably wrong.
Nice hat Mike...

Hey Mike. Beautiful guitars. Nice wall of amps too I use the amps at my school most of the time, so all I have is a Traynor practice amp and a Mini Marshall Stack (Pocket Amp!!)
Matt: That's my Telecaster. Custom pickguard and a matching strap :P I wanted something other than the black and white. Speaking of which, check this out. My new Danelectro bass. These things are hard to find left-handed, so I'm glad I grabbed it.

Oh, and Fender does make the Stratocaster. There are tons of knock-offs though. Squier however is owned by Fender, so they're legally allowed to call it a strat.

Frankly, it's refreshing to see train buffs who have other things that the rest of the world might interpret as a "life".

Same here, I always wondered what happened to people in their daily lives that forced them to come home and play with toy trains haha
Trains has really become my winter thing, since my other hobby mostly takes place during the spring thru fall season. /tyco/forum/uploaded/ChrisC/IMG_8180.JPG /tyco/forum/uploaded/ChrisC/NHSCC%2011-2-08%20019.jpg And my 2008 review *SOME NWS LANGUAGE, MIGHT WANNA USE HEADPHONES* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jq6wqshP9BI I've been autocrossing for about 10 years now? I've been in the civic most the time (being cheap to run helps). But I've driven all sorts of stuff in between from muscle cars to turbocharged imports. When I've had the civic on the street its been great for chasing trains Hopefully someday I'll move up to something with a few more cyclinders and powered rear wheels, but for now its great fun!

Wow, nice Mustang!
A lot of people on here have really neat cars, and I must admit I'm jealous of more than a few...
