I am back from the Wayne NJ train show. Maybe there were 10 HO dealers in a mainly Lionel O and Flier S train show. Those 10 dealers had many things I would have gotten, if when I looked in my pocket, money was there. One dealer had a collection of 1956 to 59 trains. At least 10 maybe 0ne less International brass locomotives. All unbuilt kits in original boxes. He had a large collection of Fleischmann from that time. Cars were in original boxes. He had 4 boxed sets. Two were fleischmann, one was the HObbyline Lehigh Valley passenger set, the forth set I cant remember what it was. He had a unboxed Santa Fe HObbyline set with a FM H-10-44 lowery diesel, Rock island silver box car, L&N flat car with 2 wood loads and a caboose, red, that Had HObbyline printed on it. Boxed penn line cars and the small diesel boxed. He had many other boxed unbuilt kits. Laconia, Roundhouse, HObbyline, Central valley, Aries models, gondolas flats and hoppers by Selley, Lots of stuff. The only thing he had I got was a Rivarossi Southern Pacific 4-4-2 #3000, the same one as sold in 1957 by Lionel.
photo of my stuff from the show.

Hi John. the decapod camelback is my son steve's work. He did 2 of them. He only used the drive from the spectrum decapod. Everything else he made, scratchbuilt.
* The challenger is a 1957 international brass model from Japan. Somewhere I have the manufactures name. This tender came with the loco.
* And Justin is right. The Atlantic is a 1957 model from Italy. Both the loco and tender bodies are made from Bake-o-lite. A early plastic. A identical tender was made by Rivarossi for use on its 2 different 0-8-0s.
* Rivarossi also made this model for Lionel. It is in there first HO catalog. It is the same bake-o-lite model. I realy don't know if this is a made for Lionel model or one made for sale under the Rivarossi name. I don't know what the differences are. In the 1957 AHC catalog, p-8, it is listed as a 4-4-2 Atlantic by Rivarossi. It sold for $32.50. The International 4-6-0 brass camelback sold for, $27.50. The International brass Challenger mentioned 2 paragraphs up sold for $95.00 .

The Rivarossi Southern Pacific 4-4-2 #3000.

Nelson the SP 4-4-2 has its problems. It is hard to find a good one to run. Most are for static display due to how fragile the plastic used is. I was so happy to see one, I only gave it a quick look over. As far as can be seen, this one only had a missing tender step. I wont be putting power to it unless I can get some new drivers under it. And not original ones. Maybe some Hornby ones. They make big double o drivers. This one for now is a shelf sitter, or a Interesting piece of scenery.

You know what it is the same today. It is at a place in the kitbash where attention goes to the I4 class. Summer is over and I found my attic again. I can actually spend some time up there so back to the I4. I spent some time on it, a little each day for the past week and I am getting the feel of making things again. Today I did the most. I even started on the second tender. I still don't like the cab and the forward walkways. I have redone the firebox and the rear walkways. Did a little detailing. That is where I am now.

Yes Barry, mainly styrene and plastic fillers. The problem with that is it isn't strong enough. On the I5 loco I use brass walkways and handrails. That holds up better to handling. On this the walkways are styrene. The styrene cabs have no strength at all and need to be carefully handled. The more you work with something the better you make it.

Very nice Frank. Doesn't that seem to be the way, though, that you take a locomotive you want to do a number on and make sure it's running so you don't have to take it apart so much once you "finish" it, then, after the work, and the pains-taking touch-ups, you find that you do indeed get to take it apart again. Right now, I'm looking at the smokebox number plate and wondering if you know where you can get miniature raised numbers that might fit in an HO number plate? Thanks, Barry

Fireman's side? Uh, I thought his was the back-side. That's why there's a small roof/cab on the tail of the loco. That is, for these mother hubbards/camel-backs.

For John; Controls for operating steam engines are always in the right side of the cab. This is the engineers side! The left side of the cab is the domain of the fireman, even on a camelback. On camelbacks yes the fireman worked almost always at the rear of locomotive tending the fire. On larger camelbacks assigned to heavy trains, 2 firemen were assigned, Almost all camelbacks didn't have strokers, coal feeding devices. One fireman wasn't enough to keep steam pressure up with such wide, and large fireboxes. It took two men to feed coal into the firebox when demands were high during up hill climbs, with heavy loads. On CRR of NJ's K class camelbacks,4-8-0, two firemen were almost always assigned. The warmest place on the camelback is the cab. Communication between engineer and fireman was necessary. The cab was still the best place for it. A lot less noise where verbal messages can be given. When tending the fire, the crew used of hand signals.

Hey Frank, that was good information (for me anyway) on the positions of the firemen in different situations. I'm looking at your locomotive now, and since I'm not well versed in these things, I'm wondering . . . is the entire front of that locomotive the smoke box and all the fire business is behind the cab? Thanks. Barry

Barry, you need to read more. The internet is full of information on how steam engines work.
* Here is a link to a book search that will open up a lot of info on books on railroad information. It opens to copies of a Monthly Magazine named " Railway and locomotive Engineering ". The books are indexed and this can help in a search. For dating the books you'll need to open one. Here is a sample of dates matched to the Volume listed.
*** Volume 17 is 1904, V- 27 is 1914, V-36 is 1923.
Enjoy your trip into the past.
frank

http://archive.org/search.php?query=railway%20and%20locomotive%20engineering

PS: I worked on the I4 today had good success in making, and installing the hinged deck plate that mounts to the loco, and extends to the tender. It came out so well that I am planning the hinged safety gates for the fireman's deck area , now that I have a fireman's deck area. It is like one detail leads to another.

Thanks Frank. I've been reading, but not expansively enough. I've been concentrating on the Colorado Midland which use to run about 40 feet from my back door "back in the day". So, I've studied the Baldwin and Schenectady locomotives that the CM used, but none of these were camelbacks. I'll check that link. Thanks, Barry

More has been done to the I4. Some small handrail stanchions I got today will lead to the final detail addition to the I4. This is the I4 right now.

Looks light the headlight has a lense on it. If it does, what did you use?

Watching all the pieces come together over time through this thread makes it that much cooler when the engine comes together! That's one tidy bit of workmanship.

Good morning Don ! The pair of 2-8-0 camelback have really been a challenge for me. The I4 is done. All it need is a engineer a fireman and a touch of color here and there. The other one, The I5, the first I started still sits in limbo awaiting some finishing work . These 2 have not gone together easily. They started as Reading 2-8-0 camelbacks because Reading had the largest boilered one and would have been closer in size to the Bachmann boiler I started with. My trash can became the home for many failed cabs and boilers. A year and a half is to long to do any project. The I5 goes back on the work bench after new years. They should be quite a pair when double-headed, pulling a freight train.

Moving on to next project.
*** P&R Old time 2-4-4 Suburban locomotives like Baldwin built back in 1880s. ***
** Here you see my Lionel 2-4-2 Columbia types. These are very toy like steam engines. I am going to rework two of them in 2-4-4 Suburban types. I'll keep three original. You can see two spare bodies in the upper left corner. These are the bodies I will rework.
* One of these is a #0643LT.

** Does anyone have spare tenders for this loco. I could use one or two ??? ***

** First step place two 2-4-2 locomotives with the best bodies and the best drives, to be saved as Lionel collector items.

Next place remaining 3, 2-4-2s on ready track till needed in building process.

Next ready cutting board for work.

Next leave everything and check for cold beer.

Back from the hobby shop. Picked up 3 packages of Evergreen scale models strip styrene in different shapes. Also some sheet styrene that looks like wood boards. They still had Floquil engine black so I got 2 bottles. They also had a old section of Aristo Craft steel connecting bridge. Real old Polk Hobby stuff. I spent almost $30.

* Ben, what looks like a train is a photo frame.

* Ken, I'll keep the photos coming, and bottoms up.
