I just got another cheap engine...and I know why. The plastic wheels are broken/missing and the rear truck is bent/missing the coupler. The truck is riveted together, which I could bend back and drill out the rivet, but is this part avail as an assembly?? The engine is marked "Mantua - Tyco on the bottom.

The coupler is easy enough to fix. Pop the cover off with a screw driver, straighten the base with a pair of plyers, put a new coupler into the top piece and press it back on.

For the wheels, your best bet is to find another junk engine and take the wheels off that. You may be able to pop the plastic wheel off and slide the axle into the truck, or you may have to drill the rivets out.

I think Tyco sold the trucks seperately for dual-motor conversions, but the truck you have there is from the 60's, which may make it hard to find one.

If I pop off the cover to replace the coupler, will it go back together??? It apears to be riveted together. The wheel comes right off; as seen in pic. It only appears to be held in place by the side plates. I got two engines with cabooses for $10 shipped, so I can't complain. Thanks for the reply, Josh.

The coupler pocket is held together by a small pin. If you put a flat screwdriver inside and gently pry it the two pieces should seperate (the pin will stay attached to the cover). When you put it back together, gently squeeze the cover on with a pair of plyers until the pin goes back into the bottom section. You'll see two metal tabs that hang down from the cover. Once it is back on, gently squeeze the tabs to ensure the pocket does not wiggle around.

If you have all the wheels, you may be able to put them back on, and then put a drop of super glue on the plastic wheel to keep it from splitting entirely.

We had a topic about the plastic wheels splitting a few months back. You may be able to get some ideas on how to fix it from that.

Thanks for the info and link. Yes, I'm missing one of the wheels, but I've gotten some PM's offering parts/pieces. This is a great forum; most I frequent have a "click" that scoffs at every basic question that is easy to them , but not always to a "newbie". Thanks, Josh.
