I have two Alco 430 engines. One says "Mantua-Tyco" on the fuel tank; the other just "Tyco". I just noticed that one is powered by the front truck; the other engine is rear powered. Does this indicate different years of manufacture, or is this the Mantua influence? Are parts interchangeable? Any other info would be appreciated, Josh.

The Mantua-Tyco engine may from the 60's while the Tyco one is from the 70's. I know Tyco put their MU-2 motors (from the 60's) in the rear of their F-7's while they put the PT motors (from the 70's) in the front. I don't have any 60's era 430's, but it was probably the same for them as it was with the F-7's. If you could post a picture that would help.
If one of the engines is from the 60's and the other is from the 70's, than most of the parts would not be interchangeable.

The Mantua with rear drive:

The Tyco with front drive was a Silver Streak, so 1978-80 vintage?

The enigne in the pic you posted is (or was) powered by an MU-2 motor. If you look at the front truck, it is made of metal and is riveted together. The Powertorque motors were plastic and screwed together.
So yes...the engine in your pic is most likely 60's or early 70's and I think you're right about the silver streak.
BTW, are you sure the front truck on that 430 is a dummy truck? I noticed the wire hanging out the back, and I'm pretty sure that one normally screws onto the dummy truck

You are 100% correct. I have three engines apart and posted a pic of the WRONG one. I was hoping to not become "that guy".......and I'm well on my way!

LOL. In any case, the engine in the pic you posted definitely has an MU-2 motor in it (and is probably very similar to the other one). I've never seen a rear-truck driven one. If you get a pic of it please post it

Oh, you guys are REALLY going top hate me now!!! The rear drive engine I have apart is a Bachmann......I took the fuel tank off and lost track of what brand I was working on. I wanted to fix one at a time, but didn't have any parts, so I kept taking things apart. Oh well, sorry for the waste of time!!!

Ahaha! So you're getting to that point where you've got so many engines you can't tell one from another. It's like me and all my Tyco CN F-7s...those things hate me. They'll just magically stop working from day to day....than headlights that never worked before come on and confuse me, and then I can't tell which one is which...next fuel tanks start falling out. Jeez...I have 6 of them...you'd think atleast one would work reliably O_o Sorry for the ramble...

Cheez, you oughta name your F-7's and give them each a name tag. I would call one "Blinky" if it has a problematic headlight...

That sounds like a GRANDE idea Actually, I've named so many things, I'm surprised I haven't named any of my trains. When I was like 3 years old and playing with little battery operated trains, I used to get my mom to write names of ppl I knew on these little sticker things she had...then I'd put them on my different trains. Not sure why I stopped doing that...guess I ran out of names.
Generally, I just address my trains with whatever is written on them...that doesn't really work though when they all say CN O_o I'm sure I can find names for them though...
Here's a pic of one of my old trains. You can see the two little stickers (one had the name, the other had the number):

I was kinda joking about the names, but it looks like there was more truth in it than I realized.

LOL. If Thomas the Tank Engine could do it, than so can I. I haven't named any of my trains in years. The only thing I still name are my instruments. I've got a pair of trombones named Zoey and J-lo, and a guitar named Erk...my other guitars don't have souls yet, so I haven't named them.
