This loco has NOT been converted in any way. I just added details. Most are required for all locos on the NMN. 1) replaced the handrails as usual 2) added the mandatory rotary beacon, 3 chime horn and roof mounted bell 3) added wire grabs. 4) chassie mounted couplers and filled pilots 5) removed rooftop fan behind the cab. replaced with cover plate.
This loco came stock with an open frame 5 pole motor that actually performed quite well. But I had a spare Cannon motor and was looking for a good use for it. So in went the new can motor. However, there was no way to mount the flywheel. Fortunately this engine works smoothly without one. I did increase the electrical pickup and added a rear light.

Nice Work on the Alco 424.
That AHM model is maybe among the best of what AHM imported in the '70s. The shell tooling is from Roco, I believe, from just about the same time Roco was doing Atlas' original run of HO-scale diesels. Though there are some errors with the shell, I remember they ran well and were nice models for their time.

Roco, indeed! And Mike's 424 shows just how amenable the cheap and plentiful AHM/Roco Alco is to super-detailing. They most assuredly "perform quite well" right out of the box. As previously discussed with Hypop, I employ more than a few in CNW and Milw livery. So, modelers and would-be detailers, get ya one of these underappreciated Alcos and go to town. They are great platforms for rework, as Mike's pix clearly show. thanks for another offering from the NMN shops! MA

Here is a peek under the hood. The lightbulb sitting on the rear weights is normally slipped into a short piece of brass rod glued to the rear light/number boards. http://hypoponera.tripod.com/album_2/index.album?i=11&s=1

Hypoponera and the Tyco Crew, I just picked up a nice Roco BN 424 at the Cumberland Swap meet Sun. It ran ok for a few laps then started to smoke. I cleaned it though it wasn't very dirty, oiled it and it still runs but gets very hot quickly. The armature doesn' seem to move as freely as if it's binding somewhere. Could the problem be the armature. I see you've put a can motor in your Alco. I'd like to keep this one cherry. Any ideas? PS. Nice custom painted Alco too

What's the condition of the traction tires? That does have them right? If the tires are slipping or cracked and worn, that could be causing you trouble.

The traction tires are there but I think they've hardened. I thought maybe the power truck was binding somewhere but so far haven't turned up anything there. I'll look again at the tires. I hope to solve this, the BN 424 is nice looking, and my other 424 Spirit O' '76 runs good.
Thanks

Mike, Thought this 424, from the original posting, deserved a second look. I'd like to see it pulling a train. Is this freelanced? AF

Alco Fan, Yes, the loco is free lanced. The "New Mexico Northern" exists only in my hobby room! All locos that I have rebuilt are painted for the NMN. Being a fictitious road allows me to do everything my way without any openings for the nit pickers! Future passenger locos will be painted in grey and blue.
