According to MRC site info, your loco should be about ten years old.

Popping sound? Like popping as in sparks? Maybe something wasn't connected properly and sparks caught one of the plastic pieces on fire. Athearn parts aren't too hard to get though, so as long as the shell wasn't damaged you should be able to get it running again.

It looks like it has to be an Athearn, so that's a first for me, and I worked at an exhibit where they were abused and overheated. It sounds like the brushes wore out, or a combination oil and brush dust created flammable gunk, but it's still hard to believe. There must have been some wicked arcing going on in there.

As long as the shell is okay, you can get a new motor on eBay or at most LHS's, or throw in a better one like an A-Line.

It made two pops, it was like a engine backfiring. the shell wasnt on, I was looking for binding in the drive train. I'm going to get a new motor Athearn and new drive shafts, I found it has brass worm gears on it.
