I found this on Etsy - A FT&V Silverama Line boxcar in a Lionel box. It is obviously not a Lionel car, but seller claims it is Tyco. I've never seen this before and was wondering if anyone else has? Oh, yea, it is going for only $120.

Here is the link: https://www.etsy.com/listing/1113747113/lionel-ho-scale-train-car-0872-1-ft7-v?click_key=c7979106b86869ae47143d19643c82d3d94e14b1%3A1113747113&click_sum=c0e2b7ec&ga_order=most_relevant&ga_search_type=all&ga_view_type=gallery&ga_search_query=ho lionel&ref=sr_gallery-1-34&organic_search_click=1

There's a shadow that makes the chassis hard to see (looks like cast metal to my old eyes) but the trucks are definitely old Tyco. Did Rivarossi make freight cars for Tyco- like they did with the C-636?
I will say that is a a nice vintage piece. The roof lettering is an interesting feature.

Justin, although Rivarossi produced cars for Lionel in 1957, this specific road name is not in any documentation that I've seen. The lettering on the roof is unusual. Could be that someone took a Rivarossi/Lionel car and customized it.

grande, I tried zooming in, but the results were too blurred. I agree that the trucks appear to be Tyco, but the decals, especially on the roof, are very unusual and I've never seen any documentation on this. It just may be an uncatalogued car, but my gut says not.

BUT those trucks ARE TYCO Mantua the bottom looks like them as well. It is possible it was a TYCO promo car

ONE THING for sure the box is for refer cars made for Lionel by Athearn or Rivorassi

Bus, I've searched but cannot find any hits on a Lionel HO RCA set. Do you have any links to such a set?

thesiding, correct. That Lionel box is specifically for a Fruit Growers Express boxcar.

Although this could be an uncataloged car, my gut says there was some degree of customization done to the car, especially the lettering on the roof.

Now the photos are not the clearest, BUT the lettering on the roof particularly shows no decal film. The lettering does show the little bit of blotchiness associated with tempo (rubber stamp) printing. Whatever this thing is, I now need one, but not at that price. I'm still clutching my pearls after seeing a Sohio tanker going for $125 plus shipping!!!

That set is neato. All by Lionel???

Busss, not exactly any kind of computer whiz, but when I download
something with png, etc. I simply delete that png and put in jpg
and then save it that way. For whatever reason that seems to do
the trick 90% of the time.

Thanks for the info, guys. The thread from 2016 is very informative. The pictures from GG-1 Guy and waw47 certainly point to this being a 1950s Tyco Blue Box set. I downloaded the pic and then zoomed in to the roof and sure enough the lettering is present. I'm going to look through the 1950s catalogs again and see what I can find.

Update: Tyco introduced the diesel switcher in 1960 beginning with road name Republic Steel. The RCA switcher didn't come on the scene until 1962. Therefore, I would assume if there is a Tyco RCA set, that it was introduced during or after 1962. I took a quick look at the 1960s Tyco catalogs, but couldn't find such a set. I'm thinking out loud here, but could the photo of a Tyco blue box with the RCA boxcar be incorrect? As in someone stuffed the RCA boxcar into the blue box? I've seen similar instances.

The RCA Box Car, Gondola and Bobber Caboose came in blue boxes circa mid 1950's. The RCA Switcher was not part of the promotion. Someone added it to freight cars to make a set.

Thanks, waw. I've looked through the 1950s catalogs, both Tyco and to play it safe, Mantua, but cannot find any of these cars. Lots of other neat cars, but not the Silverama line.
