Here comes Shock Control!!!

These are my favorite rebuilds to date, I love the colors and the bold graphics of Santa Fe Shock Control equipment. I was "shocked" to see how well these rebuilds turned out....

The removal of the molded on side ladders really helped with the painting process, the final product was well worth the effort! What do you think?

"DF" Stands for "Damage Free", a trademark name for a load restraining system marketed by Evans, a railroad equipment supplier.

Thank you for your complement on my work Barry, but I can't take credit for the color choices, Santa Fe set the standard before I was born!

Those Santa Fe cars are really nice. I like the little details, like the plating for the "extra" on the door and the new ladders and grabs.

Well done!

Hello All,

Behold my latest rebuilds, these Rio Grande cars will certainly stand out in my 50 car train at the Trainfest show this November in Milwaukee.

If anyone is tempted to tackle a multi-colored paint scheme like this one I highly recommend removing molded on details where color transitions occur, I highly doubt I would have achieved such good results without removing the molded on side ladders! Also note how much more under frame detail is visible on the two cars that lack "fish belly" side sills, this is a good example of how the Cal Scale Hydra Cushion kit can really enhances a car's appearance!

I currently have more rebuilds on my work bench, stay tuned!!!!

Hi all,

Here are my three latest rebuilds, Milwaukee Road "Yellow Stripe" boxcars from the 2100-2150 series! This color scheme was easily the most challenging of all the paint jobs I have undertook for this project. Getting those yellow bands to come out uniform and straight was a challenge because there are no natural lines on the shells that I could follow. Even worse, unlike the Rio Grande cars with their pinstripe boarder decals, there is no easy way to hide any blemishes on these Milwaukee Road stripe cars. None the less, after numerous touch ups I was able to get the lines fairly straight on these three cars. What do you think....

I'll be starting a new batch or rebuilds soon so stay tuned!!!

GOAL ACCOMPLISHED!!

Imagine my surprise when I finally did my first inventory of rebuilt Tyco pluggers completed to date to discover that I finished my fiftieth rebuild today!!

(Actually after every car was accounted for I discovered I have 51 rebuilds completed).

This means that the New Years Resolution goal I had set for myself back in January 2016 has been met, I have 50 rebuilt pluggers for Trainfest 2016!!!

To all those who have been following my posts on this project, your support and encouragement helped motivate me to reach this lofty goal, Thank You.

"So now what" you may be wondering, "is the Tyco Plug Door Boxcar Rebuilding Program over"?

"NO WAY"

At last count I still have 26 Tyco Pluggers waiting for their turn in the paint booth and I have lots of additional projects planned! Stay tuned as more rebuilds develop!

The lettering on the Milwaukee Road cars is amazing. It looks like it was made by masking the brown paint and putting the yellow over it. If the lettering is a decal, it doesn't show at all and it's nicely matched to the color of the car. Also, nice job getting lettering onto that corrugated door.

Me, an artist? Thank you Barry, that's nice of you to say but I am not really an "artist". True "artists" have natural abilities and vision that most people lack, that is not me. I have mastered some simple techniques that produce nice results, no "natural abilities" are required!

The techniques I used to build my rebuilds can be followed by anyone, all that are needed are the proper tools: (Air Brush, paint booth, Dremel Tool, hobby knife with a supply of sharp blades, files, screw drivers, paint brushes, scale ruler, Xuron cutting tools, and masking tape).

With a little practice and patience, anyone can reproduce my results with their own model railroad projects. It is my hope that my work will encourage others to try their hand at making models out of basic materials.

Scott, you may not be an artist in oils, water or pen and ink, but an artist is defined by:

experience,

technique,

and MEDIUM used.

Since your medium is model railroading, Barry is right. You are an artist in the model railroading
medium.
Not all artists have a "natural" ability. Some learn/earn it which you have done.

Key word there is technique. Many can acquire the proper tools but relatively few who can master the technique. This takes natural talent - artistic ability, if you will.
At any rate, impressive work - thanks for sharing it!

Ok, I have a really bad question here,

How hard is it to actually remove the roofwalk?

I've rebuilt a few Tyco boxcars but usually it's just down to using the sides and replacing the ends and roof, so I'm curious to try and keep 90 percent intact instead of 25

just me Ray... and just because I have Tyco doesn't mean I am not a model railroader

Removing the roof walk on these cars in an attempt to preserve the rest of the roof detail would be a major challenge. Your best bet would be to cut out the roof walk using a motor tool and then fill in the resulting slot in the roof with styrene plastic strips. Duplicating the ribs and contours found on the preserved portions of roof seemlessly over the rebuilt section would be the main challenge.

I personally think removing the roof walk on Tyco pluggers is more trouble than it's worth, it would be easier to start with a car without a "molded on" roofwalk instead.

If a modeler is determined to use Tyco equipment to model cars without roof walks, the best bet would be to completely remove the original roof and replace it with an Accurail roof.

I always order directly from Accurail, for some reason Walthers never seems to stock enough Accurail detail parts to keep up with demand. Accurail's web site is....

http://www.accurail.com/accurail/parts.htm

They always have their own parts in stock and they ship out orders quickly too!!

I Have noticed also that a lot of things that walters says not in stock can be bought straight from the maker. thinking of getting the 40" under frame instead of the 50' as it has the brake gear as a differnt part. All I need anyway is the brake gear and the bolsters as I have been making my own under frame for some cars that where missing them.

In preparation for Trainfest this November I have assembled a three unit consist of power to pull my 50 car plugger rebuild train. The Athearn F7 A unit was completed back in 1987 when I was 16, my first locomotive repainting project! The GP 7 is a Proto 2000 factory painted unit that I touched up and weathered a couple years ago. The Athearn F7 B unit was finished just a couple days ago, judging from my pictures I need to do some additional weathering to the fuel tank and trucks. All three units are powered with efficient motors.

The "theme" for Trainfest this year (2016) is a tribute to the Milwaukee Road so everyone is encouraged to operate Milwaukee Road equipment. My latest batch of rebuilds will be some additional Milwaukee Road cars to give my "rebuild plugger train" a Milwaukee Road flavor.

That's a sweet looking trio of engines. The combination of early diesels really looks good in MILW colors, since they made do with a lot of old power in their time.

Those tubes are Spark Arrestor devices used to prevent these old locomotives from starting trackside grass fires from exhaust sparks. The particular arrestors represented on my model are a unique design made and used only by the Milwaukee Road. The part is made by Detail Associates.

Thanks scsshaggy,

The Milwaukee Road did make due with a lot of worn out power during the 1970's, I could have used a trio of GP40's or even SD40-2's but I think these old first generation locomotives evoke a lot more character,

Hi All!

I'm going to complete one more batch of rebuilds before Trainfest just to be sure I have 50 "well behaved" cars for my planned train. (By "well behaved" I mean cars that won't mysteriously derail for no good reason).

Also, because the whole train show will have a Milwaukee Road theme, I wanted my rebuild train to feature a healthy number of Milwaukee Road cars, hence this latest batch of rebuilds...

This is one of seven 51000 series Milwaukee Road boxcars I am currently working on. Note the extended low hanging side sills and the small door...

Here is a picture of a prototype car, paint scheme is just a "dip job"....

http://www.rr-fallenflags.org/milw/milw51517.jpg

I am almost ready to start painting and decaling so stay tuned!!

Just in time for Trainfest another batch of rebuilds has rolled out out my Tyco Plug Door Boxcar Rebuilding Program. This time I produced seven plain jane Milwaukee Road 51000 series sliding door boxcars with extend side sills.

The prototype cars were so plain looking that most railfan photographers passed on burning film on them, as a result pictures of Milwaukee Road's 51000 series boxcars are hard to come by. None-the-less the Milwaukee Road originally had 800 of these cars on their roster so they are more than worthy to model.

Speaking of car numbers, I would like to comment on an excellent resource that I use for prototype information; The Official Railway Equipment Register....

This phone book sized monthly periodical is the reference guide the railroad industry uses to document the car roster of every railroad and private car owner in North America. For example this is the entry for the Milwaukee Road's 51000 series cars from the October 1974 issue of the ORER...

Note that there are 17 cars in the 51000 series that are earmarked for hauling BOMBS!!!

If you are modeling a specific date, year, or just a general era, a copy of the ORER from the period being modeled is a handy book to have. You can find old copies of the ORER on eBay in book form or on CDs.

Anyway, here are my latest batch of cars.....

Now using the ORER, which of these seven cars would be carrying military ordinance?

The answer to the question posed in my last post is....

MILW 51290.

KABOOM!!!!!!

Interestingly a friend of mine who hired out with the Milwaukee Road in the early 1970's told me an interesting story about these "bomb" cars.

Apparently one of these special boxcars accidentally got lost and ended up in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The clerks assumed that the car was empty so it was picked up by one of the local switch jobs and spotted for loading inside one of the area's massive paper mills! The mistake was discovered when the loading dock crew opened the car up to find it full of blockbuster bombs, needless to say the whole plant was evacuated until the car was pulled from the property!!!

In case you are wondering how a car load of explosives could get "lost", apparently these special cars had no external lettering or hazardous placards advertising their contents!!!! The belief at the time was that the cars needed no special handling because the bombs were harmless without fuses!!! Tragically this proved not to be the case when several boxcar loads of bombs blew up in Southern Pacific's Roseville yard in California!!!

Been wanting to get a copy of the OPER also.

LOl heck I can belive that a car of bombs can get lost, The Air Force not to long ago let a B-52 with nukes on board leave a base and fly to texas? Belive it was a maintance person that noticed it was caring nukes. A lot of people got fired and in trouble over that.

edit: was wroung on what state in landed in

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_United_States_Air_Force_nuclear_weapons_incident

List of other nuclear ops

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_military_nuclear_accidents

I even have my own story about nukes. While I was stationed at Travis AFB I was working on a piece of support equipment, took the forms inside to get it signed off, came back and found it gone. Tracked it done parked in frount of a C-141, went by a group of 4-5 people up to the equipment next to the crew door, put the forms on it and started to walk back to my vehicle. The group of people went nuts as I had broke the 2 man rule dealing with nukes, the plane had some on board it turned out. Didn't get in trouble as they had let me walk right by them up to the plane and back before they even noticed me. LOL fun times.

Hello all,

Today I completed the last three rebuilds I will create before Trainfest 2016, introducing the MILW 5150-5159 series!!!

With only 19 cars painted in this unusual yellow paint scheme photographs of these cars are rare. In fact the only photograph that that I could find from this series at all was MILW 5150. Unfortunately for my purposes number 5150 just so happened to be the 100,000 PS-1 type boxcar that Pullman Standard constructed so it received a special silver paint scheme to commemorate this manufacturing milestone.

With no photographs to work from, I based my cars off of the lettering diagrams included with the decals, all in all they turned out all right.

One unique feature of these models is the under frame I used. Like my Rio Grande cars shown above, the Milwaukee Road prototypes also had Hydroframe cushioning systems , however this time I used a product made by Details West....

Part number 182 provides a complete under frame including all of the details necessary to model the Hydroframe cushioning system. Better yet it is a supper easy kit to assemble with no small parts! The catch? Details West discontinued making this item a few years ago so they are hard to come by.

Anyway, here are the pictures of my latest cars....

Before the big trainshow I may go back and redo some of my earlier rebuilds just to get them up to my current standards... Stay Tuned!!!

Just finished painting the wheels on all my older rebuilds, that's as much as I feel interested in doing. I have some new projects on my workbench that will warrant a new thread. I can't wait for Trainfest 2016!!! I hope to see some of you there!!!!

Out of curiosity, how many Tyco Forum members plan on attending Trainfest if any? For those of you who will not be able to attend, I will take plenty of pictures and even shoot some video! If there are any members who are interested in meeting me at Trainfest please PM me.

See you there!!!

I found the following info about the Roseville Yard Disaster in Wikipedia...

On April 28, 1973, 18 boxcars loaded with bombs en route to the Concord Naval Weapons Station began detonating in the Southern Pacific Railroad yard after one of the cars caught fire. More than 6,000 bombs detonated, injuring more than 350 people. The explosions caused damage to 5500 buildings up to 6,800 feet (2,070 m) away. The cause of the initial car fire has never been determined.[33] In the late 1990s, development in the area by the Union Pacific Railroad uncovered more unexploded ordnance, which was eventually removed.[34]

Extensively modifying 50 cars like that in the time you did it is one ambitious project! Seeing the cars roll by in one long train drives the point home.

Congratulations on a big job done in a pretty short time frame.

Thank you Don! As I said, still photos don't do this train justice, it helps to see it in motion rolling past a single point on the layout.

This is also my very first video, it turned out better than I hoped considering that I have zero experience creating motion pictures.
