I think the original truck sans coupler pocket might be worth at keast trying, if it works out that should save you some effort at the very least.

Well I am always open to experimenting with new ideas, but frankly I think it is easier to convert Tyco cars to higher grade trucks than it is to get the original Tyco "snap-in" talgo style trucks to work properly. I have found that the ability to fine tune the play between the truck and body bolsters by adjusting the truck mounting screw can mean the difference between a derailment prone lemon and a trouble free runner.
That being said, it is a shame that there is no easy way to convert the Tyco "snap-in" truck to screw mounting, the tooling on the Tyco truck side frames is excellent and I especially like the addition of brake shoe detail. If anyone has ever modified the Tyco "snap-in" truck to a screw mount, I would be interested in hearing how it was done.

I have never tried it but can you cut the snap in tabs off and glue on a small washer in their place?

Whenever possible, I retain the original Tyco trucks. They look good, I don't have to buy replacements, and Intermountain 33" wheelsets are a perfect replacement for the Tyco wheelsets, no 'tuning' necessary. Remove the coupler pocket from the truck and body mount a new Kadee. Or, use the Kadee conversion parts and mount a knuckle coupler right on the Tyco truck.

Isn't the Delrin plastic the Tyco trucks are made from resistant to most adhesives?

Good news! Eight new cars have left the paint booth, the photo below represents the 4 varieties I have ready for decals..

The top left car is one of three L&N cars. The top right car is one of two sliding door CNW cars. The bottom left car is one CNW brown plugger The bottom right car is one of two CNW yellow pluggers.
Stay tunned...

For those of you who are detail oriented readers, you may be wondering why I only have two yellow CNW pluggers ready to paint when I originally announced I was going to do five (which I then revised down to four). Well, it turns out that I had a few paint "fails" while doing this pack of five.
Yellow as it turns out is a notoriously hard color to air brush, I think it has something to do with the pigments. While painting my five yellow CNW cars I had some trouble with the paint actually drying in mid air before landing on the surface of the shells. This results in a "sandy" texture to the paint's finish and poor adhesion to the surface that is to be painted.
The first of my five CNW pluggers had such a poor finish that I decided to strip it and paint it boxcar brown. The other four seemed to have passable finish so I went ahead and masked the sides in order to paint roof and ends.
All seemed well until I pulled off the masking tape, then this happened to two of my cars.....

I have been airbrushing my own cars for several years now and I still haven't mastered yellow!
Next time I will add more Modelflex "Extender" to my paint and keep my airbrush closer to the paint surface. Oh well, live and learn....

It's not just airbrushing, yellow tends to be an absolute complete and total b****rd with most kinds of painting outside of automotive and house paint.

Yup yellow can be a problem, have had problems with orange also. Have found that flat colors cover better then gloss colors.

Don't know if you tried it, I assume you have, but a light primer coat of flat white helps a lot. I use plain old inexpensive Krylon flat white spray can.

Stay tuned....
PS: Note the "D" and "L" missing from "The Dixie Line" on the decal sheet, I used them for the "DL" markings on my PRR cars.

Up next, my sliding door CNW cars...

As you can see, I also rely on books to get prototype lettering information. Just because the cars are old Tyco's doesn't mean they shouldn't be made to look as accurate as possible.
Not pictured are the yellow CNW pluggers and the NYC double door boxcar, they are half way through the painting process! Stay tuned...

In this post I will show the masking and painting technique I employ.
First step is to mask your car with tape, this process is tedious but supper important.....

Once you have your tape in place, seal your tape edges with an overcoat of the color you have just masked over. This reduces the seepage of paint leaking under the tape edges caused by capillary action...

Once you are certain all gaps are sealed, apply your second color. When you are finished painting, gently pull back the masking tape, avoid pulling the tape up !

If all works out well, you should have a flawless paint job, if not use a fine bristle paint brush to touch up any bad spots...

Well I don't know what it is about my CNW pluggers, but if the paint is not giving me fits then the decals are!!!

This disintegration problem occurs when decals become brittle from age or improper storage. Fortunately there are "spray-on" and "brush-on" decal film products that can stabilize sick decals. The product I use is VitaClear's "Transfer Coat" shown below...

This product is designed to seal ink jet printer artwork on VitaCal Decal Paper but it's also effective for re-sealing commercially made decals as well. The product is simple to use, simply spray a mist of this material over the decal sheet and then let it dry.
Now if there was only a way of determining whether or not a decal set is in danger of falling apart before you attempt to soak and apply it.
Stay tuned...

I went to a local train show and swap meet today and guess what, more Tyco pluggers followed me home....

and among the pluggers I picked up today was one true gem that I have never seen before...

a promotional car for a mail order company called "E and H Model Hobbies Inc" from Philadelphia PA.
This car is a first generation version of the Tyco Plug Door Boxcar, complete with the original frame and the weight held in place by two interior shell posts (See GIC's Plug Door Boxcar post). Most interestingly, the shell is made out of a clear plastic , most cars from this era are made from white plastic so this is really unusual.
This company advertised its mail service in Model Railroader Magazine from September 1952 to January 1973. I could find no other info about this outfit.
In the next post I will get back to my rebuilds, stay tuned...

That is a good question, as I stated in the very first message of this post, the goal that I set for myself was to have enough rebuilt pluggers to make a 50 car train on my train club's portable layout at the "Trainfest" train show in November *. Since the cars I am modeling are too modern for the steam era it wouldn't look right to use a Big Boy to pull them. The club's portable layout has no grades on its main line so I think two or three Athearn Super Powered F7 locomotives should be able to handle a train of this size.
The locomotives I will make for this train will be a subject for an independent post, I will announce that project as we get closer to November so stay tuned.
* Trainfest will be held on the second weekend of November in Milwaukee at the Wisconsin State Fairground's Exhibition Center.

Well, I specifically thought of the Big Boys because they were not only powerhouses but lasted in service til '59.
But yeah, an F7 lashup or w/e works too.

In a prior message in this post I showed how I modified some of my pluggers by using Detail West's cushion draft gear kit. As you may recall the Details West product yielded a really nice representation of cushion draft gear but required a lot of work to install.
In this post I would like to demonstrate an alternative product, Walthers part 920-2311 "Cushion Car Coupler Pocket 8-Pack"....

This simple Walthers kit has four advantages over the Details West product: 1. The parts are made of styrene plastic 2. Assembly and installation is fast and easy. 3. This kit is reasonably priced. (Walthers costs $1.75 per car vs. $2.50 per car for the Details West product) 4. This kit includes INSTRUCTIONS!!!

Not that you really need instructions, assembly is self explanatory as the following photo montage shows....

I will soon have pictures of the Walthers kit on a completed car, stay tuned....

Hello all,
I will be taking a one week hiatus so that I can take sorely needed vacation with my wife. I will pick up with the rebuilding program as soon as I get back home!
In the mean time, try a rebuild of your own and show it off here! I would love to see what you can come up with!
I'll be back soon....
Scott

Have a good trip with your wife.
The Bn one is stripped, the white one is still stripping though paint on it. Have to look through my decal sheets to see what scheme I will do.

How dare you take a vacation and make your faithful followers wait. Where'd you go?? I used to go up the Bruce Peninsula during summers. God's country. Take me home to Georgian Bay.
