Recent acquisition that I can't identify. The frame/weight/couple boxes are pure Athearn, but the car body is made up of 4 separate pieces that are glued together and then glued to the frame. Any ideas?

Probably an Intermountain kit. Look and compare. It's a starting point anyway. Dave

I really don't think so. The multiple-part body is wrong, and AHM cars, if I recall, had cast-in grabs. Look at the photo..you will see where the PO did not install the provided grabs in the factory holes on the sides. Intermountain has those. Might be someone else, but it's a bit more complex of a kit that the AHM RTR stuff. Dave

I did a search for "SLSF 50374". What turned up leads me to think this is an early Proto 2000 kit.

Maybe. I did the same search, all led me in the direction of Intermountain. You'd think there would be a cast in identifier underneath somewhere.

http://pwrs.ca/usr_images/920-37050.gif That's a Proto1000. If all models have same number of horizontal planks. NOT Proto, NOT Walthers, and I have yet to find a good enough shot to read Intermountain exactly, but they look on the one shot to be too many, again, if all models are the same number.

Thank for all of the insight. Based on what I've read, I took a different approach in my searching and I believe this is an early Walthers kit (pre Proto). I found something similar on eBay. Looking at the photo in this listing, it appears to have an Athearn like frame and the number of side boards and mounting holes for handrails all match.

Thanks again for all of the research and speculation, it really helped!
Now, if I could just cure myself from being drawn to purchase large lots of used freight cars to get those one or two unique items I may not have this problem in the future.

It's not entirely unheard of for folks to have made kits that used Athearn parts in their construction. Until Horizon bought them out, you could buy say 10,000 40' flat car underframes and the related detail parts, not a big deal, and save yourself some money on tooling.
Walthers did a number of things that used these parts, the Beer Can tank car, the Jail Box, and some other things borrowed heavily from the Athearn parts bin, in a time before they bought out Train Miniature and began their own production in earnest.
