Could have been a pre-production mock-up that later got given/tossed out to someone. Pretty crude looking, but then again, many mock-ups are just that. Interesting piece for sure!

No, not pre-Varney....looks like wood. Look at the nose, you can see woodgrain. Plus a BIG chunk seems to be missing on fireman's side windows. Not bad for history, but you'd be hard pressed to get a front coupler to work with anything but a flatcar. http://modelrailroader.net/img/3-301a.jpg You'll see what I mean. I see they claim "bakelite", which Varney didn't use...I can't think ever. Bakelite would date it to pre-1950, one would think. For a hundred fifty, they had better include the rest of the train and the broken cab part...and even then, too much. It does appear to have Varney drives....with rubber tubing couplings on the shafts (why can't they do decent photos?) Dave Edit: I think the originals were silver/grey plastic...and Bakelite is black or at the best very dark brown.

It looks like a very well made custom. The motor looks like a HobbyTown (or Lindsay) motor. The wheel sets appear to be an F unit or similar loco style trucks and the rest looks custom made. Very handsome model, though.

| I really can't make out the trucks 100%. Thought Varney, but not enough screws. Whatever it is, broken, missing the train (sell all the parts separate and increase your evilbait profit? Like the morons that separate engine and tender), one fifty plus shipping is about...oh...150 too much.

The trucks look like a completely different loco than this, the big bar on the base looks like HobbyTown. It's a custom.

Looking at it more, the house window screen stuck in the sides is a real class touch. Dave
