Hello, all. I've been thinking about making a switching layout for quite some time now and now I've finally started doing it. I went online earlier this month and found a layout plan that I would like to base the layout off of. It's an H0 scale layout, too, and it's from a model railroad magazine from October of 1976.
Since then, here's what I've gotten done on it.
The first photo, I took a week or so ago after I did two coats of paint on it.
The second photo is after I put the third coat of paint on it. I don't know why I didn't take any pictures before painting it, though.

Congratulations, you've finally discovered the classic Timesaver (or an expanded version of it.) Prepare to lose your mind to pointless switching games

That's actually the point, though because I wanted to run some of my trains on something besides just a loop of track.

| I've had on of those for over 25 years. When my son belonged to a youth train club and we went to shows, I would take it along for the kids attending the show to operate. It ended up with more fathers running it than kids.

What a classic choice! I got a Model Railroader issue with the article and track plan.

I didn't know this many people even knew of this track plan. Yeah, it should be fun.

| I have seen that one at several shows. The Batavia NY show each year has a table where they let the kids run it. Needless to say they have added foam padding to the end of each of the tracks. My kids love finding a display they can tough and operate though after looking and not touching all day.

| When I made mine I only made the one half of it. If you note one side is a mirror of the other. I then hinged it in the middle so I could fold it for easy travelling.

Very interesting stuff, guys. Anyway, since then, I've found a possible structure I can use if I know I still have room after completing it. You see, my track section you see in those photos is a little bit shorter than the track plan so it's gonna make things a bit awkward. Anyway, here's the building I was thinking about using (if I have any extra room).

Apparently that's the way they do them now. Recycling bins, I mean. And honestly, now that I think of it, that shot kinda reminds me of Mirobusss's.

Thanks, Chops. Of course, it'll be a bit more than a week most likely before I get anything else done on it due to the fact that I need to buy materials at the upcoming train show the last weekend of this month.

Anyway, I just got a ton of track at the train show this weekend including switches and here's a really bad picture of them. Sorry, I was kinda in a hurry.

Currently, I am laying out the track I got at the show to see what design works the best. Here's how it's looking so far.

You do not have enough trackage on the ends past the switches to be able to do anything. To operate this, as designed, you have to build it exactly as described with track lengths designed to hold the stated number of cars given in the design. This is a switching puzzle, cars are spotted on the layout randomly and then the objective is to place them in designated spots, which requires moving 1 or 2 cars at a time to shuffle them around and you don't have the space required to do that. For example, in the run around at the front of the layout, you don't have enough room to have an engine clear the switch to be able to throw it, never mind trying to do it while pushing/pulling one or more cars.

That's why we're getting flexy track, too. I have it all planned out.

We've just found yesterday that the layout is really not supposed to be like the way we made it, which is why it was so cramped. It was actually supposed to be half of the switches as what we saw. Therefore, we are planning on making it be able to snap on to other sections someone might want to do and we made it smaller. Can't get a pick uploaded because I'm on my phone and I'm not at home. I will soon, though, hopefully.

Okay, I've got it. Here's what it'll most likely look like.
On top of that, my train group (we store our donations here at my house) has a ton of H0 scale buildings in it. One of them being a switching tower, which I really want to use on this switching layout. The leader of the group (my father) knows I want it and says we'll take a vote on whether to sell it to anybody who wants the stuff or not, hopefully. Well, here it is, anyway.

That's one place I was thinking about putting it if my dad and the rest of the group allowed me to use it. Until we vote about it, I won't be able to.

I got a neat building that I'm planning on building (no pun intended) for my switching layout that came with a ton of stuff from my grandparents. It's a Life Like Oil Company building kit and it's tiny, perfect for this switching layout. On top of that, I also got a dozen 3ft steel flexi track in that same lot for my switching layout as well so that's cool.

I just got another building for the switching layout. (Seriously, there's tons of room on the layout. )The building is a Tyco lighted factory building, and it still works great and I got it for $11 plus tax. The biggest drawback is that it's faded but that's okay, it's called realism. Here she is.

I don't think it is faded, mine looks pretty much the same. I do agree that it has a faded look, but I believe that is just the way they were made. I think I am going to be repainting mine for a more realistic look though.

I was thinking about weathering it, actually, when I finally get it on the switching layout to make it look more "real".

Hi GG1 Guy, Many of our layouts are of the "round and round" continuous running type. A switching layout is made for switching cars from one location to another. You setup the cars on the front track and each car is assigned a location it needs to end up when you are done. The object is to get the cars from the front of the track to each specified location and try to do in the least amount of time or switching moves. Personally I just find it fun doing the job rather than trying to get it done fast with the least amount of moves. Our local NMRA division has one of these that we setup during train shows. The kids (and adults) love it. Regards, Vic B.

Exactly. Its supposed to make it more than just around the layout track. The average oval track gets boring after 30 minutes while the switching layout stays fun for hours on end.

Okay, a new update after a long time. Since I had a lot of things going on, I couldn't really get anything done on this layout. I finally found time to work on it recently. Here's how it looks now.

I've started leveling the layout to make the track less slanted and stuff. You gotta remember, this layout box thing's been underneath the house for a couple of years before I started working on it. Oh, and I also marked the track to show where the track will get glued down.

| That set-up does look like it could be interesting. I'm looking forward to a video of one of your switching operations.

I will try to make one at some point. Especially if I can get the family to let me bring the video camera to the show in a couple of months.

Yesterday, I finished sauntering the layout so I can now run trains on it.

I just started gluing down scenery for the layout. Here's how it's looking so far.

Coming along nicely, KovacsteOOO. Is this going to be home to the abandoned BOTW? Seeing your work is giving me motivation to bet back to work on my layout. I've been slacking as of late.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I just tested the layout, and it works. It just needs some heavy cleaning, though, since most of the track came from my grandparents and had been sitting in a dirty attic for about 25 years. Not too hard to do. Oh, and yes, I will add this thing to BOTW eventually.
