It looks to be a AHM SD40(-2?). If it is does it have power trucks front and rear, or just one power truck? If it has only one, can it be retrofitted with a second power truck.

It has some handrails broken off, but I replace them anyway, and the cab roof is the wrong color and missing the horns. Another minor inconvenience.

The running condition is unknown, so it may or may not run. But I re-power with can motors so no big deal.

The guy wants $10.00. Is it worth it?

Mehano as sold by AHM and who knows who else. Parts are near impossible to come by except for gears and some bits shared with other Mehano engines.

Frankly I wouldn't spend the money on it when so many better SD40-2's are out there for not much more money.

It might be worth it if you needed a motor and drive parts, but I'd give him $7 max.

http://www.hoseeker.org/AHMRivarossiassembly/ahmbuildersbiblepage116.jpg

While these have both trucks powered, only 4 axles are geared and there are no traction tires, which makes them very slippery. They also touted the flywheels in these, but from what I've heard they don't add any momentum.

I'd look for a BB Athearn SD40-2.

Au contraire,
My fellow modelers. Have we so quickly forgotten Mr Vince's GP9 units. Experience and beauty are both in the eye of the beholder. He seems to have a knack with the Mehano models. A little repair and some new hand rails, could make this a thing of beauty.

Vince, There is an IHC Mehano SD-40 on eBay with pictures. The bottom view does not show any traction tires so it is most likely all wheel drive.

Ah yes. The GP30 that was the reason why UP changed the 844 steam locomotive to 8444.

Yup, and maybe after all that work it will look almost as good an Athearn. It certainly won't perform as well, and won't pull worth a darn without traction tires. You can add tons of weight instead, but a certain percentage of it will be stolen by the idler wheels, so it becomes a case of diminishing returns.

The GP18's OTOH have all wheel drive, making them a better starting point. (I steered clear from Mehano's 6 axle diesels in favor of Athearns even back in the 70's.) Hypoponera did a nice job with an AHM SD40 that he posted to this forum. Vince can do anything he wants if he likes a challenge; personally I wouldn't bother. Just my 2 cents.

NP759,

I too have been a Athearn fan for years. I found Vince's model of the GP9 interesting, because I would like to create a ALCO RS unit that has been upgraded with a GP long hood. The combination of the Mehano RS-2 and a GP-18 would be a plausible kit bash. The Athearn Blue Box GP-9 is a poor shell at best and the frame does not allow a narrow long hood.

I can understand his interest in the Mehano SD-40, because of his past experience. We are all guilty of the benefits and pitfalls of practicing what we already know.

The only Mehano units I have are a few F3A units and a RS-2 that was modified to a dummy and coupled to a MDC RS-3. The F3 units are way to fast for my taste. I may try a slower motor in the future. I will use Bachmann 8 wheel F unit drives to standardize my FT fleet in the future.

I have an Athearn SD40-2 in a box somewhere around here. I'll sell it to you for $15.00. I have removed the paint from the shell. Runs very well.

Older Proto 2000 units that need gears can often be had for $25 or so. Hood is a separate piece. Combine with Stewart RS3 shells (available from Bowser) which are flat kits, or an Atlas RS3, which also has shell separate from walkway.

I'd say forget that AHM SD40-2 and look for an old athearn one. I found a perfectly good conrail one minus handrails for $5 once, and although the going rate for them is about $15-25 from what I see, they pull way better than the AHM/mehano ones.

The first IHC / Mehano version of the GG1 with one motor used the same 3 axle truck housings as these diesels, with the outer and middle axles geared and the inboard axles unpowered. They ran like they were rolling on marbles, and adding weight didn't help much. They could pull themselves, but that was about it.

I love a challenge... I already figured out how to power the two dead axles.

Well, more power to ya. What are you planning?

AFAIK the IHC SD24 was the only Mehano 6 axle diesel with all axles powered. Those trucks have the extra idler gears and would be a direct swap.
