Here's my SOTW a DCC Great Northern Blue Sky diesel (forgot the class) with Blue Sky grain cars. Before I show you the picture, Great Northern was the railroad that used to pass my hometown until Burlington bought it and the all that stuff.

My dad loves the Blue Sky livery too. It's not my favorite but I definitely think it's a nice livery.

Remember those great public relations photos from the past. Here is my take on a post-merger p.r. BN with a healthy dose of Tyco for effect!

My SOTW is from the Collection I purchased from a friend. An AT&SF Blue Goose Passenger Set. My T&RGRR connects with the Santa FE so this train will fit on my WWII era railroad nicely.
AHM Rivarossi Engine and Passenger set.

My second set of the week. This set is from the train club I was a member of in the 90s The Day Light passenger train with the ALCO PA & PB must have several hundred hours of running on the club layout. The powered PA was modified to eliminate the metal bar on the top of the motor with wires. Except for that modification it is stock with the original gears and motor. Irv made good products.

A beautiful set John, especially with the PA/PB team. I have dismissed these short Athearn cars as being "too short" in the past but I rethought things after getting the Tyco Santa Fe streamliner set that I can run on my layout with all the curves and not look ridiculous doing it. I like prototypical lengths but if you can't run them what's the point?

Here is a little ol Tyco streamliner that I picked up at a thrift shop and gave a complete rehab. All the car lighting works and it runs pretty good.

Beautiful! What did you pay for it? Must've been cheap cause you can get these trains for dirt cheap at antique stores because they think they're just toys. If you really think about it, model trains in general are toys. Grown man toys, that is.

kovacs - must be a regional difference on that, because around here antique stores think that anything to do with model trains is a rare collectible made of solid gold. I kid you not, I found a totally JUNK recent era Life-Like train in a box for a decent price once because the seller was closing shop, but other than that I would say on average they want two to three times or more what you would find for the same thing at a train show. Thing is, this stuff never sells, it sits there literally year to year but the price stays.

I know! Why don't they bring down the price on stuff that's been there for ages? That's just 100% illogical.

My wife had an antique booth about 15 years ago, and she currently has one with her mother and sister. So I have some understanding of the antique dealers' point of view. The "antique" business relies to a large degree on nostalgia. The market for these model trains is not the serious collector (who is aware of the existence of train shows), but the non-hobbyist who had a model train when he (or she) was a child, but hasn't thought of it since; that is, until the sight of said train in an antique mall brings back a flood of childhood memories. This person (who is unaware of train shows) thinks he better get this rare (to him) item while he has the chance, so he forks over the 20 bucks for the Tyco BN boxcar. So the prices remain high year after year waiting for the right person to find it. Case in point: my wife once bought a NIB old chrome plated waffle iron at auction for a buck because no one else at the auction wanted it. She put it in her booth. The "right" person bought it for nearly $60! It happens.

Glenn - yes I see the antique dealer's point of view, although I find it frustrating personally - because if this stuff was even in the general neighborhood of train show pricing I would probably buy it. And you are right on the price, it's usually about $20 for a Tyco/Bachmann/Life-Like boxcar. There's an antique store about 2 hours from here in Ohio that I visit maybe twice a year or so. There's an Athearn FP-45 there that's an old friend of mine, we've been meeting there for years. Sealed in plastic wrap, but it's been picked up so many times over the years it's starting to rattle. One of these days I'm going to buy it just so I don't have to see it sitting on the shelf anymore, and that dealer is gonna be smiling...

Wow, that was the wordiest reply yet Truth be told, I bought it as part of a lot of HO stuff that they had on hand and I got tired of getting it piecemeal and just decided to go for broke and just made an offer for the whole lot. The storeowner had no clue about train stuff and it was being held on consignment, she called the owner with my offer and he agreed. Think I paid forty bucks for the whole shebang, so if you do the math I guess you could say I paid about $8.00 bucks for the CN set which was actually loaded with filth when I got it and the F-unit didn't run and had cracked wheels so it really wasn't much of a bargain for anyone else. I had the parts and experience in fixing these things up so it worked out for me. The rest of the lot consisted mostly of AHM cars that are missing their trucks, I am fixing those at my leisure but one more item that was included was an AHM C-liner that became the donor for my bronze sculpture that I featured in the AHM section under C-liner becomes art Now I said a mouthful as well

Thanks for the compliments, here is my secret. Disassemble everything! clean with warm water mild hand soap and an old soft bristle toothbrush. Use a Magic Eraser by Mr. Clean and just barely and I mean barely go over the surface....do not scrub! This removes the accumulated oxidation and it is amazing how it restores the colors to the original look. I do not recommend this for everything, only hard luck cases that have seen a lot of abuse! The CN unit had a discolored and cracked nose decal that I was able to remove with masking tape and I just happened to have a Microscale replacement nose herald in my stash.

$20 for a cheap H0 scale box car without the box! Those people charge crazy amounts of money for H0 scale stuff. Just imagine how much even the cheap locomotives go in antique shops. Yikes!

this is true I've even bought a infamous diesel at a antique store for $20! & its a Bachmann Spectrum GP-30 #844! I am surprised no one in Cheyenne,WY where store is, bought it! That loco is the reason 4-8-4 #844 went to #8444 It still exists today on the Nevada Southern Railway in Boulder City,NV It the same antique/flea market store I got a Matchbox container ship with 6 plastic containers for $15 You bet that'll end up on my layout
