Exactly, Jerry... I want this layout to be as nice as possible whenever finished. I want to be satisfied with placement the first time around. I don't want to throw this together in a big hurry only to be disappointed later... I'm not going to do it...

Finally have the second plywood base cut to fit well and have laid out the basics of this section. Used the concrete duplicating paint on the 7-UP side and asphalt the other side. Planning maybe trimming the clip ear from the bottom of guardrail and drilling the board to hold them. Thinkin' about what decor to use on this section. Any suggestions are welcome...

Walt - looking good with each update as always!
My first thoughts - do something to break up the newness/uniformity of the concrete and asphalt. Expansion joints, patches, tire marks, stains, puddles, cracks, etc.
Maybe some weeds growing. A grassy area between the two. Use of additional curbing. Maybe some outbuildings for storage. A fenced area beside the electric company to store old parts and equipment. Some additional light poles. Fencing here and there.
Just thinking off the top of my head, hope some of that helps

I really like those hedges; never seen those before. Looks like you'll have some nice colour on the layout.

Yes, Eric... I bought the scenics to add color to my layout. I want it to be spring like and happy... I was more excited about the flowered hedges than any of the other things! The 5-6 inch trees are to keep the slot cars off the floor at the end of the long straight away!

Took a couple of JTT flowered hedges and added more flowers. I made a heavier red and an orange one as seen in left row. Need one of these for the large flower pot in front of Life-Like's Firehouse...

That's a clever way of doing it. The soft trees won't damage any rogue cars they happen to catch. Nice bushes too!

Been wanting to cover my layout when I'm not working on it. After thinking about it a while, I made a slightly larger than 8x20 PVC frame and covering with a 10x20 plastic drop cloth. I have 14 small hook hangers on the floor joists that holds this up within three inches of the floor joists practically un-noticeable... The cover when finished has a 10 inch clearance from the table surface, the cover makes no contact to the light poles, buildings etc. Still laying the cover plastic at this time. Drop cloth overhang will end up about a foot down from the hanging frame on the side & ends.

It hangs on small strings Jerry. It weighs nothing. I found it easily lifts and attaches on one side, then go around and do the other... Strings and overhang get laid up in the small area between the joist and the frame out of sight... Takes about a minute to hang and stuff the excess on top.

The layout cover worked out as nice as I had thought it would in my mind. I hung it up tonight for the first time with the 10X20 plastic attached to the frame work. Hard to get a good photo due to the length of it.

Thank You, Richard! I had to have a cover. I try hard to keep my basement really clean but dust happens. Taking a minute to raise or lower this cover saves hours of dusting & cleaning... Wishing you and your family the best holiday season as well...

| Great idea Walt. I'm thinkin' as much as the dust collecting on my bench/layout and equipment adds to the realism, it would be prudent to take some protective measures before something goes too long and gets ruined.

A couple pics of a part on the section I'm currently working on. Adding a bit of detail to the Tyco Machine shop. Some dirty roof staining, weeds and grasses, that will be further extended out from the building. This building will have the blue & white flickering Arc Welding simulator inside when section is finished... Also purchased a set of 10 , four inch tall maple trees and another box of 4 pink cherry blossom trees as I had posted in an above prior photo. Moving way too slow on this section though.. About the large plastic cover I had made, I keep finding good things about it. Every now and then I closely turn around a corner of the table and bump the hanging assembly. This light weight assembly just swings in a little bit then comes back to where it belongs. I've also found myself lifting the clear plastic overhang to look for an item under the cover. Other times I find I have lifted a section by the PVC pipe to reach a piece.. Can't find anything bad to say about it..

They're very nice looking trees according to the photo. To make it look even better, I would usually sprinkle some grass on it unless you wanna keep the TYCO style thing which is also good.

I've made a little progress on the layout section I will post later tonight. For now, here is my trackside helpers. I have one of the colorful garbage cans on each corner of my table. I never have to go very far to throw something away. Also a very handy yard stick hangs on one table leg while the grabber hangs on the other, both neatly out of the way. Inside one leg hangs the shaggy duster, which I will need less since I made the hanging layout cover...

A couple of pics since I've added a little detail.. There's loose grass pieces everywhere but I haven't cleaned up much yet. Have added some oil puddles or stains in the parking spots... Still going to add a lot with more detail on the black top and concrete surfaces...
The two trees in the lower pics will not be there, maybe smaller trees or something...

I went to Hobby Lobby today trying to decide what small trees to use on the corner of this section... I couldn't decide, so I took pictures of what I liked and will go back. It's just 5 minutes away...

The raccoons don't actually eat the bones. They just pick them clean and leave them on the neighbor's back porch. I'm not sure what the skunks do, beyond resorting to chemical warfare with the raccoons.

I found a 3 week old raccoon and kept him for eight months as a pet. Nothing more entertaining... He even slept on the bed with me...
I've added a photo with a few changes from days ago. The two green trees was removed and the red flowering bushes was placed there. The front parking area of KFC has been sprayed flat black, with parking lines added...The 4 corners of KFC has the painted yellow curbing added to it. Sadly, my over cropped photo lose soo much color.

Thank You, Richard !
You are correct Ben about the 3 parking curbs being there. But the slot cars that we know as HO scale are larger than an actual size HO car. So space in front of my KFC has been narrowed down to 2 parking spaces, from 3. I didn't have the heart to grind them off so they got sprayed flat black with the rest of that section. If I paint them yellow or white it will elevate the change even more. So I'm just going to leave them there, flat black and barely noticeable. I figure if this is the worst inaccuracy on my layout I'll be doing pretty good....

Attempting to blacken of the traffic area of the 7-UP plant. Have some sewer covers of two kinds ordered. This is the first time ever of this kind of detailing. Will add oil stains where the truck cabs sit and whatever else I can come up with... The trees aren't mounted permanently so they're leaning a bit...

Those sections are looking great. Definitely screams 1970's-1980's Tyco/Bachmann stuff.

Looking good Walt! It's amazing what you can do with Tyco kits. I like the attention to detail on the surroundings as well. I'd say you hit the nail on the head with those 1970's oil stains. My AMC did a similar number on the street in front of my parents' house....

The local Hobby Lobby has a nice selection of Woodland Scenic trees... I decided on trees called "Sunkissed" for the corner in question. These are 1-1/4 to 2 inches tall in a 5 pack... They have the removable base where a small hole can be drilled and the trees will stand in... Photos taken with section partially screwed down. I drilled holes for lights in each building... I will take this section back up to finish detailing...

Barry, I have not run the cars for several months now. Since I started the first section some of the light poles have been removed and laying around, a lot of them on the track. Also a bit of dust on the track from before I made the cover. The main drag down the center is a mess from shuffling buildings etc.. So I have unplugged the power to the layout for now,.
I must say for the couple of weeks that I had the cars running, it was a big boost in making me want to finish something else on the table... maybe I should take a few minutes to get the track dusted and organized again, and running!
