Finished one this morning... One thing I noticed during testing was when this bulb blinked on, all my highway poles dimmed just a little. I have at least a dozen blinking lights so I'm gonna hook the blinkers up on their own transformer...

Today I opened a packaged Tyco Blinking Billboard and hooked it up. This is one piece that is waaay too bright for the scale... Will have to tone it down some as it probably lights up 4 square feet of area. I just cant get excited with the idea of using LEDs on an HO layout ...

I can't wait to see it with buildings. Along with the ones you've already got, that highway strip would look wonderful with some of the 1960s-modern suburban buildings from Suydam and Tru-Scale.e

A better pic of the light pole without the glare..
Thank You, Autobus Prime. I have a second long straight that will look as "downtown" area with a lot of the buildings there.

I never knew Tyco made traffic signals. This is going to look great, so I hope you can take a long exposure shot when it's done.
You'd better run your cars on 6 volts and impose a 40 smph speed limit.

Thank You, Nelson... The blinking red Color looks nicer than the yellow... The modification was really simple to do.
The speed limit will be closely watched by the AFX Police and Highway Patrol cars...

A three day trip out of town has eliminated any progress on the layout. I did find and purchase some cement colored, textured paint to use on my bridge structure pieces. Probably buy some plaster when I get home. I'm wondering how much of a mess I can make with this stuff?

The cement colored paint I think I'm gonna like. Surprisingly, the paint is quite thin and I've never seen a can of paint with so much pressure!! Sprays really too strong.

Maybe it's higher pressure because of the texture consistency? Looking forward to seeing it.

Using a hard foam board, 1/4 inch to construct my 4 lane slot car bridge over the trains. This 5-1/2 foot section is only half, or one side of the rail tracks... Will form grass/earth banking from the car track sides down to the bottom of the pillars. Going to use auto-body plastic bondo filler for this. Testing what this $28 new can will do for the hobby. Using this method, I can apply filler in my shop and no fumes will be in the house at all.. UPDATE: I have some large poster board that I had cut, shaped and glued to the roadway piers and the foam board below. I am excited about this tonight as the little section I used the body filler over turned out just as I expected ! I believe this is going to work out well... I'm laying the filler at the top even with the roadway surface. This will end up as "berm", and can be graveled etc.... I can leave it a little rough or sand it a bit, then paint and cover with grass, Etc.. QUESTIONABLE, I mixed the filler in my shop then carried the cardboard into the house/basement. NO one in the house mentioned smelling it at all.

Have one coat on so far. Masking tape along the side & top of the track edge forming a nice berm along the side of the road. Later I'll remove the track and do a little sanding, then add filler where needed. I figure painting and some heavy grass etc, will top this off nicely. I will cut off excess foam board then mould the edges to the layout table...

Spent some time shaping the one side. Still needs a bit of filler on each end.. The autobody filler works well for me.... Berm is flush with the roadway...should cover well with Woodland Scenic products.

Very clean work, Walt! I can't wait to see it finished. One thing I've never tackled in any layout is change in track/road elevation. You're going to have a super fun layout to drive!

Wow. I tried this on a smaller scale, but abandoned the idea because the slot cars just failed to make effective electrical contact after about half a dozen hours of testing, no matter how diligently I cleaned the track.
You have better luck?? Is this is a manufacturer thing?

Jeff, I ran this layout quite a bit for a while with basically no problems. I had some issues in the 70s with my trains and slots running well but was set up in a cold damp garage. Much better conditions here today... I have about a 12 foot section of track removed making my bridge scene...
JNXT, I believe in the NO-OXID... It's still very visible on the rails of the slot car track but it's not a "messy" grease.

Have the first bridge half to a comfortable stage so I spent a little time on the curved half today. Maybe some Bondo on it tomorrow... I think the guardrail will get molded in on this curve... One trick using the body filler is not to use much hardener in it. I'm using just enough to make the filler harden. This adds a little more "spreadable work time" to apply it.

Thank You, wks... I often think about getting the buildings out and placing some down the main 4 lane in the center of the layout. But I haven't yet cus I know they wont look good without some scenery around them.
Almost have one side of the bridge complete. Will be glad to have them out of the way. These has required a lot of time. Too many trips and vacations this summer, seems like everything is moving real slow. Still exciting to think about what it will become...
I now have the hard part done on this piece. Track got really dirty so I'll have to clean it and add NoOxid again... A real quick paint job leaving the berm areas a black/white spray. A mix of Woodland Scenic products should finish this area to look good. ( I hope )

Your layout is looking a little bit better every time you post a photo of it.About you having a ton of vacations, I'm the same way. My family almost always seem to be planning to go on some big vacation all the time during the Summer so I don't have as much time as I would like to work on my model train stuff.

Finally have the hard part of the bridge grades finished. A quick shot of paint and placed the dirty slot car track on before the paint was dry.. I'll trim bottom foam board and mount to train layout table soon. Gotta make a woodland scenics purchase before long!

Thank You, Barry I sat them on the layout and put some weight on them to flatten out the bottom foam boards, and connected the track again(track still dirty) The bridge steel beams fit well. They look good on the layout and I will screw them down, and add the street lights, etc... I'm excited after seeing them where they belong and can look forward to more progress...

Thank You, Stephen...
My thoughts now is to remove and clean 28 pieces of track, mount the two grade sections with screws and get the slot track back together with the bridge beams in place. Then add about 26 pole lights from where I left off over around the bridge and beyond to where the 4 lane ends.
Thinking of painting the guardrail on the bridge either yellow or silver....
I have also decided to change the railroad a little at the bridge as seen in photos. originally I was going to square them under the bridge for a large rectangle. Had a little more room under there so I'm going to angle them out a bit, leaving room for one of my side tracks to go down a space between the slot track and bridge grade...(also seen in pic)

BTW, what did you end up doing in terms of lights per transformer and how many lights in series after all your experimentation?

Thank You, Don I ended up using only 16 lights per transformer. This leaves them at a fairly bright yet realistic look. I take two light poles, and connect one wire from each pole together. The other two wires go to the power wires. Basically saying running 8 pairs of lights per transformer...

That looks just like a town scene from the 1980's.

Yeah, Stephen... I'm there in the 70s to 80s era! Only one shown in this pic (theater) but I'm thinking of where to put the 8 Tyco Center Street Series buildings... The street with these buildings in the photo is right in the "center" of the layout... Should this become, "Center Street" ???

Put up 16 more Tyco Fluorescent light poles and have 15 them wired and working. Have only 16 more to have the complete 4 lane section finished. Then have only 19 Life-Like Expressway poles to wire around the 2 lane sections...
I Like This Photo... After the roadway lighting is finished there will be buildings & homes lighting inside and exterior, billboards, and signs...
Pic of trying to figure out what section the buildings will be placed...

Is there a four track mainline planned for that area there in the foreground?
