Looks like a boulevard already, with the cop eyeing the Vette

Have you thought about staggering the lights?

Thank You, Jerry. Have local & State Police slot cars... Friday night street racing will be a risk!

Thank You, Barry... Gonna be a lot of detail work once (or during) while things are being placed... Wish I could get more time on it...

Bought a few items recently on eBay and waiting for them to arrive. Found a box on 12 NOS 9 inch straights with white dashed lines. Bought a rail cleaning eraser to use, and some NoOxId to keep them shiney clean...

Cleaning the slot car track rails is about as fun as watching paint dry. Very slowly getting pieces done when I have time. Boring best describes this task...

I've also found that the planned underpass may be replaced by a slot car bridge passing over the trains. The angle of the track Passover makes for a very difficult underpass that takes up a lot of space, and robs the area of two train side tracks, needed for many unused train cars..

AS expected, I've broken two connecting tabs so far. This is the reason I bought many pieces of extra track of all kinds...

Yes, Eric... The box art is pretty cool as most old Tyco art is. Earlier today, I won another box of the same 12 NOS straights from the same seller. Had well over 100 nice 9" straits and used them all up. Have many 6" pieces but don't want to use them only where needed... auction number 121315814415

Received the two NOS boxes of slot car straights. Both very nice, 24 new pieces of track to use. I have 78 pieces completely cleaned with nice shiny rails and contacts. Tonight I started applying the NoOxId grease to the metal...

Gonna do the 20 foot long straightaway first and one end then concentrate strongly on the bridge or underpass, which ever works and looks best. The pieces I've cleaned will do these areas...

Here's what brushing the NoOxId on the rails looks like. I can apply this grease quicker than cleaning the track rails.

Enlarged this section in length & width which made a bit more 4 lane. I used white poster board for a templet. I have bought a nice 3/8 sheet of plywood that is just tad thicker than the slot track. Should be a nice way to add buildings and detail on, also will hold the slot car track in place as the thin plywood will have a couple of screws holding it down.

A couple of neat details that I like is the long 17-1/2 foot 4 lane straight and the 15-1/2 foot straight with the train crossings and intersections on it....

Looks good Walt! The fact that the plywood is slightly higher than the road will give you a realistic curb. If you put the "curb" on the outside of the corners as well people would be forced to slow down so as not to drift their cars into the curb. It might add some realism to your city racing...

ONLY 16 more pieces of slot car track to clean, grease and snap on !

Yes Eric, I thought the (yellow) curb idea was a nice detail and driveways into the businesses can easily be filed out of the section. I cut the section today... I'm also workin a little on the bridge section...

Yes Autobus it's already fun to run I have 2 lanes running at the time...

Barry, I used to set two trains at speed then run the slot cars. I'm wondering if I will have any trouble finding 3 other people to run the cars with me??

Repeat photo but when I cleaned this section of track I neglected to put the rail joiners between the crossing pieces. This morning I decided to remove this section and do so. Figuring that lining up 6 rail joiners from one lane to match up with the other lane rails would be a nightmare. Patiently and carefully, on the third attempt they all went together. I used a fair amount of NoOxId on each rail joiner hoping for good contact forever...
Also wired transformer to a third lane last night... One to go....

Wired up 4 Tyco Fluorescent poles a few minutes ago. They are separated by 18 inches. I want to see if that is a reasonable distance to mount them. If so, there will be 26 along this long stretch of the 4 lane...

Is it me or does that look like something out of Knight Rider or Tron because that looks so 80's.

Kovac, yes it's 80ish . That's the era I'm aiming for...

Eric, saw your thread ! Lookin good with the lights !

As for the layout, today I drilled and added 14 more poles along the long straight. I have 78 Fluorescent poles left to light the 4 lane section. Will light the 2 lane areas with Life-Life Expressway poles. Have over 250 light ups of different kinds... . No idea on how many I will actually have room to use....

That makes total sense because of the fact that Tyco made slot cars mostly in the late 60's to the early 90's so most of their vehicles fit that 1980's time frame.

Yes, Stephen. And my buildings are the 80s or older... I like the AFX slot cars to also fitting to the 80s....

Jerry, I agree! . Eventually, my electric bill will come in a large package by UPS !

A quick count an hour ago shows I will use 88 of the Tyco Fluorescent poles along the 4 lane. I decided to mount some of these to see how many lights one transformer will power. Pictured below the two types of poles lamps that I'll use to light the slot car track. I have 34 of the Life-Like Expressway poles (17 cards).

Changed the wire that I was using with a new 100 foot roll from Menard's. Have 12 poles and a billboard up now. Bought a new soldering kit to spot solder the wiring with. Have a 40 foot strand of wire under some of the 4 lane that I'm hooking the lights up on. 13 lights on, a couple hundred to go...

Jerry, I have often thought about two lanes in each direction! Easy enough to do by reversing two wires on the terminal tracks..

Thank You, Barry

Thank You, Ben, but for realism, much/any more light than what these poles produce would look stupid. If you notice along the freeway, the lights are NOT nearly as bright as construction grade "work spotlights". In my opinion the LEDs would look fake and ridiculously too bright. I don't want to light up 10 square feet with one pole... Nor do I want to molest the old Tyco poles to change the bulbs..

Walt, I'd save those 6 I-beams in the middle for some other project because only the outside two will ever be seen, unless you're gonna be looking under that bridge a lot. Of course, those 8 beams side by side do look really cool! That's just my two cents.

Yeah that is a good point.

Funny thing, I have been looking at overpass bridges on interstates - comparing vehicular overpass construction with railroad overpass construction. And why I mention this now is because your 8-beam overpass looks just like how a railroad overpass is built (or should say overbuilt, in comparison with a vehicular overpass). Cars and trucks may have 2 to 4 I-beams, depending on how many lanes....but railroad bridges really pack those I-beams in, understandably.

Glenn, I thought the same thing but if I didn't use all 8, it would drive me nuts knowing they were not under there.

Jerry, I too have been looking at the highway bridges, Ohio seems to use 4 or 5 per 2 lanes. I bought 2 packs of 4...

Believe it or not I actually understand that! If I know enough about something, I want it to be accurate; if I don't, then the visual representation is enough. But I still wanted to offer a suggestion for stretching those precious hobby dollars.

What sort of bridge railing do you plan to use? Looking at your pic has my mind thinking about modern versus dated archetechure, curbs and sidewalks, and those curved chain link fence barriers designed to keep people from dropping cinder blocks on oncoming trains!

Glenn, I'm not sure what side rails etc that I will use. Need to research the 80s bridges a little. Your suggestions are always welcome...

You're right, Jerry. Something has to be under there!... And I know that you would use them seeing the detail you add...

That looks even cooler than the previous photo you showed us earlier. It just keeps getting better and better, I'm telling ya.

Those streetlamps look great on your freeway. Now I can see why you were concerned about wipeouts.

One of the items I've recently worked with is the Tyco Blinking Traffic lights. My intersections will have 2 of these along the 4 lane, and 1 where the two lanes pass thru. Tyco produced all of these to blink yellow.

Pictured is one that I have removed the red transparent lenses. I will drill holes for the red lens and black out the backside of the yellow lens.

I'll have to do 4 poles to blink red...
