I was looking at an old 1963 model magazine which advertised Athearn as selling a Virginian rectifier electric loco. Anyone ever heard of this? A plan than never came to fruition? A mislabeled ad? Did anyone else sell a loco like that?

Bachmann made a model of the E33 rectifier a few years back, it is a great model.

Lionel did the shell and Athearn the original drive when Athearn was producing Lionel's HO in 1958. It was made to fit the GP7/9 chassis. As part of the deal Athearn got to sell it also; they probably did one large run of shells before Lionel got their tooling back and were selling off the remaining inventory until they were gone. They did the same thing with the GP30s - although the die was recut for the GP35 in 1966, they cataloged the GP30 through 1969, when presumably the last ones were sold out.

The American GK/Walthers E60s - both E60CF and E60CP versions - are a mating of a Bachmann shell with Athearn drive components which was produced in the late 1970s and early 1980s and has nothing whatsoever to do with the Rectifier produced in 1958 - in fact, GE wasn't even in the locomotive business on it's own in 1958.

These units appeared in numerous fictional schemes in addition to the two or three actual prototype owners of the units. The CF got an SD9 frame with GE-C trucks, the CP used the GE-C chassis - which the Athearn GE-C units themselves came out about 1972.

The Rectifier exists in both Athearn and Lionel versions with about four drive variants - Athearn Hi-F, Athearn gear, Lionel power-torque, and possibly Lionel gear drive. For whatever reason when Lionel brought HO trains back in 1974 this tooling was not re-used - either lost or damaged, apparently.

I am not sure where you get your information but I've held both in my hands at the same time and the Bachmann shell is in not the same shell that is used on the American GK version. Not even close.

The Bachmann and American GK versions of the E60CF are quite different. There is a picture on this page showing the difference:

http://www.ho-scaletrains.net/bachmannhoscalelocomotives/id67.html

The American GK version was based on a proposed phase 2 version that was never built whereas the Bachmann is based on the as-built prototype.

That said, I'm wondering how hard it would be to repower a Bachmann E60CF with an Athearn SD9 chassis. Has anyone here attempted that?

Just do what they did, drill some holes for the chassis pins to go in and pop it on there. It's pretty obvious on both versions.

I checked mine after seeing the comparison pics and yep mine is an american GK on a SD9 frame, with the power trucks similar to those ATHEARN used on their ALCO PA1 units. As thomas said it looks like just drill the pin holes and check for internal clearances. the pantographs are different as seen here in the instruction sheet

these are the parts I am looking for mine.

As for the VIRGINIA RECTIFIER unit, someone on the forum rcently aquired one and posted it on LOTW about a month or so ago
