Well after a near 2 month delay, my friend who was also the contractor behind my parents kitchen remodel, Pat, was able to come out to my house this weekend with all the new lumber and help me put together the new benchwork!! It only took about 2 hours to fully assemble the board, there are 2 2X6 wood beams under the board and 2 2X4's as well!! The new board is 5-1/2 feet by 9 feet! Todays work was to just put together the board, tommorow we will put the board onto the prebuilt sawhorses which will be the legs! The benchwork will be entirely finished tommorow! However no I have to plan out the trackwork which I had already done but we were able to make the board larger then I enitially thought possible so now I have a lot of reworking of my track plan to do!

finished board, I'd say about 20 screws are holding all the beams underneath together
the board will be screwed down to the saw horses tommorow!

Nice, looks like a sturdy start for a layout. I would top the board with a foam insulation board as that really expands the scenic possibilities later. What track plan did you finally settle on using? Good luck with your new layout!

Thanks! And it is! Both me and the guy helping me Pat can stand on it with no issues! I don't feel like buying and installing foam on the top, didn't do it on my last 4X8 layout and it turned out great! I have to redo my entire track plan because I've got SOO much extra space! My plan was a double mainline, and my same set up from my last layout on the inside. But now I can do WAY more than that so now I'm trying to figure out what to do!

To cut out lakes or rivers, stack foam to make mountains or rock molds, scenery sticks to it etc. I don't use it because I haven't the need to do so.

Since I had to change my track plan I decided to pull some track out and put together a mainline that I'd like. Took a little while but I finally got the main line the way I want it! This is how it will appear on the layout tommorow! Just gotta buy 2 more 22' corners! That and I wanted to play trains

Things like SCVR66 said, mountains and lakes, but also foam is smoother than most plywood and is a great base for laying track as track nails will stick down. Scenery advantages are that you can stick model "trees" in the foam and remove them whenever you need. Best of all the price is only about $12 for a 4x8 1/2" thick sheet, and if you do what I did and find a sheet that is damaged on one side and perfect on the other, they will probably give you a discount. Foam is also super easy to cut. The insulation foam I use you can buy at most hardware stores, the only thing you have to do is remove the plastic film from both sides. It comes off easily and paint and glue will stick to it better. I know I sound like a foam board salesman, but I have had layouts with both foam board and plywood, and the foam board produced much better results.

You guys would not believe the huge amount of work I did today! Assembled nearly 80% of ALL my track plan, finished the new 3 track freight yard, installed the turntable roundhouse, added a shop next to the roundhouse, ballasted all tracks in freight yard and lead turntable track and the track projecting from the inner mainline!! Also scenery around the roundhouse is done! I found out that I need MUCH more track to do the new shop area and i need 2 22' radius corners to complete the outside mainline! I can tell you I've worked for 6 hours straught!! From the moment my friend Pat left after we installed the saw horse legs I was on the layout putting together the track and then.....I got crazy with it There's so many pictures to upload so stay tuned!!

Photo time!! Reminder this was all done in about 6 hours! Lots of track cutting...

the screwed in saw-horse legs!!

front view of my layout as of day 1!

and here's where all the work was done!! Installed turntable roundhouse, finished freight yard and scenery added!!

fully loaded freight yard, completed staging area!

the frame of my burned out motor Mantua 4-6-2 sits next to the SCVr roundhouse. I specially detailed the outside tracks next to the roundhouse, making ballast cover the ties! I love it!!

SVCRR66, have you thought about making your layout theme be a Rail Museum? Just make some signs that say "so-and-so rail museum", create some display tracks, and maybe even have some old equipment "out in the back forty". You could even make a large display shed (perhaps with the roof off), where non-operational equipment could be displayed. Just paint it up well and hook up the headlights to something for a cosmetic restoration like on the real thing. Add HO scale visitors, and maybe add some catenary to one of the mainlines so the visitors can enjoy the trolleys and interurbans too.

Plus, as long as your museum has a broad "collections policy", you can run anything you want, and it'll be prototypical!

It's just that your new roundhouse yard reminds me of the new ORHF facility in Portland, Oregon.
Just an idea.

Looks awesome! That is a ton of progress. It took me two months before I started ballasting. Perhaps you could put signs on the buildings saying stuff like "SCVR maintenance dept." and use decals to letter a few engines and cars for your RR too. One of the great things about a freelance RR is building your railroads identity. Looks great so far!

Thank you! Being I had basically all track planned and majority laid I figured I'd finish the area that was done and reayd for scenery. By the end of this week, locomotives will be in the roundhouse, today I plan on adding the smalelr red shop next to the grey and silver shop, and I plan to have trains fulyl running by this weekend. Just in time for the arrival of my 2 locomotives I sent into bachmann for replacement! My Climax 3 truck, and 4-8-4 Santa Fe, they are said to arrive this week! I need a ton of ballast and I will be getting all the track and ballast I need during the week!

learned a lesson the hard way. save ballast until the very last, be sure it's the lay out you want and every car and engine operates smoothly.

as far as foam, wouldn't do it any other way. !- 1/2 pink 4 x 8 $22.00 on top of 3/8 plywood. as stated lakes, streams, ditches in a matter of minutes and is a good sound deadener

By very last I assume you mean after all your track work is done? I've found that ballast is one of the first things scenery-wise I like to do. It makes the biggest mess and is a lot easier to clean up before you put everything else in. Track work, plaster work, ballast...that's how I roll . But it's all a matter of preference

The layout is looking good, SCVR!

Is there a reason you did not use cork under the track? My layout is coming along fine and I noticed a huge difference once I put cork under the track as far as noise...

I have a TON of cork that I could've used, however it wouldn.t have been enough for every stretch of track that I had and it didn't bend so i couldn't make decent corners. I'm very aware of its noise reduction, I used it for a little while on my old layout, but yeah not enough of it, didn't bend at all, and I didn't really need it. I've run many trains already and its not any louder then the last layout.

Yeah, my dad and I have been searching for a year to find a project VW bug to find, it was very hard finding the right one. We traveled to as far as Tehachapi, North Torrance, Long Beach and more locally like Saugus and Slymar. Yes I did make my dad take me to the loop after we looked at the bug down there We found mine in Hollywood for a very good price. Engine caught on fire with the last owner... fuel filter line broke however the damage was only to one side and my dad and I are expert mechanics especially with VW's so were near done replacing all the old hoses and new fuel line. Once its running we will have it repainted same color by my dad's friend. My dad has been doing jobs for 1 Day paint and body for years so he has ties to get a good paint job for cheap price and he has a friend who does upholstry so were set

*ahem* Steering back to trains...

LOL

But seriously - first - I love the sidenotes and how we start to get more understanding of our friends' lives with photo glimpses and neat stories of other things besides just the trains. This site is honestly the friendliest place in the world - and FUN! And I LOVE the layout - it is making me yearn to get everything cleaned up so I can get the benchwork started on my own layout. LOVE the pictures and the story behind it all!

This actually reminds me of bringing up something that I am doing on my layout. Obviously many of us "collect" everything we get our hands on. Although I do enjoy that - it gets to be too much for me and my wife. So with my layout I'll be doing my collecting but consolidating as well.

Let's take vehicles. I have owned many in my life. Some I wish I had back, but collecting vehicles can be expensive and use a lot of space. What I'm doing is getting HO scale models of every vehicle I've ever owned if they make one. I can put them into my layout, even document this. I'm making a binder and a website docmenting everything I've got and the story behind it, as well as the backstory for the layout.

So I can add in a vehicle I wish I owned, ones I have owned, or even get ahold of a model Volkswagen and paint it like Herbie to remind me of this situation. I'm doing this with many different items that are ending up in my layout. Souvenirs of trips can end up in the layout. I can consolidate, and at the same time breathe life into my layout.

Just thought I'd share what I'm doing in my layout - wondering how much others do the same?

There are many more things I like about this layout. I especially love looking at the blown up pictures. The toolbox with the wheelsets & trucks in the compartments in the lid are awesome.

You've got some nice stuff with the buildings and the many vehicles all in close quarters, as you would typically see in real life. Just curious as to what you use for ballast? Definitely looks quite real, and FUN!

Sorry you know us guys and our cars Anyways thank you for your kind words! My website more describes the history behind the SCVR which has only exsisted for almost 2 years, my trains go back to before I was born. Anways yeah my mom loves the tool box I have. my dad got it for me and I keep wheels, couplers, coupler pockets and various wheel pieces in the little compartments, it's very handy so I could fix trains on the go if I chose too. And the Ballast is Woodland Scenics Fine Grey and Medium Grey, the medium looks more realistic and is like actual pebbles, the fine is like sand, the only place fine is used is in the freight yard and that entire spur. Hope this helps! My layout is home to all SCVR engines which are my favorites, I run the other 40+ engines on it as well too.

the old model power signal lights are wrong
Green should be on top & red on bottom
only reason its from top: green yellow red
Is because of the old ball signaling device Ball on top meant GO as in Highball *nerd*

Sorry for not seeing this earlier!! Anyways my railroad is a tourist railroad, being I have the ability to rebuild, repair, and mantain nearly all engines I have no need for displays, nor the room anymore.. We do have a small 0-6-0T on display but it's not SCVR, you can see it above this. Are locomotives outside the roundhouse are just there for storage but are considered to be operable displays.

Nice work SCVR could you post some pictures of the whole layout? I like the house and museum areas, however the shop is the centerpiece no question. Does the engine on display run?

You mean recently? Cause above there are photos of the entire layout. As I said before there is no museum, me being a tourist railway I restore anything that comes into my shops. And its a rare spectrum Southern 0-6-0T, southern roadname is very hard to find. Anyways it ran from 2005-2009 then the motor overheated and gave out. I'm just going to buy a new 0-6-0T and just switch shells favoring the souther sceheme. I have one of the new ones and they work fairly well! This won't happen till next year.

[quote]You would not believe how many people comment about it in my youtube videos it's a 65 bug my dad and i built to look like it, but now I own a 72 bug that is getting same treatment, it will be yellow as it is now but it will look fantastic when mine's done!

I had a 65. if i remember no gas guage , just a lever under the dash to open up the valve to the spare tank that held about 3/4 of a gallon. Always ran out at the wrong time like going up a hill with cars behind you.
Also cables attached to a nob behind the gear shift that went to heater flaps. Could never close them enough to heat the car so jammed blocks of wood into ducts to shut them completely. still bloody cold unles running at max R P Ms. Increadble car in snow

Your Herbie is awesome. I would have killed for that as a kid. I was 6 when we saw the original movie in 69, and we were the only people in the parking lot to have a white Beetle. Afterward, as we were walking to the car other kids kept pointing and telling their parents "Look, it's Herbie!"

My parents should have sprung for the rally stripes and 53 decals.

Cool nice pictures I just wanted to see what the whole layout looks like with scenery. By the museum area I meant the house and the tank engine on display, as I know lots of museum like that with old depots and houses and one track with a display engine or car.

Nice work!

Congratulations ! It is put together well . I like the fact you can run 2 trains on loops and still have the third engine running here and there. Is your museum 0-6-0t a Bachmann ? Is the other 0-6-0 with the silver smoke box a Rivarossi or Bachmann ? Stay on top of what is happening under and around the layout. If you can't get to it, you can't use it. You got to get able to get around it. You'll need that access when you take pictures of your layout.
About the shelves. If the two you have trains on are yours to use, get the shelves fastened to the wall. If they ever fall over half your collection can be gone. Intermediate shelves can be made and installed for more space. Be careful handling and running trains. That is a concrete floor. Good things hitting it have a tendency of going from the floor, to parts boxes, and trash. Watch when you run trains on the back track along the wall and shelf. Trains like the derail on switch frogs. If they do at speed they will say hello to the floor.
I have a feeling you may have heard of this before. If so forgive a old man.
You have done well !

Thanks Frank!! And yeah the 0-6-0T on display is a Bachmann Spectrum steamer. The one on the flatcar is a Bachmann standard line SP 0-6-0 in the shop for work. The shelves are blocked by my layout board partially but we do plan to screw them to the wall and I've distanced the track from the board as much as I could plus I don't highballl

Went to Hobby People to see what they had being its really close to me. Like nearly all chain hobby stores they just sell sets but the one by me has a lot of scenery stuff! They fortunately had a packet of ballast I needed althought I still need 3 more.... I also bought the last bit of track I needed!! Finished 1 corner of the layout and finished the SCVR equipment siding!

Looks good, Hyde. Do you have trouble keeping the layout clean? Guys I've known with garage layouts have complained about that.

What do you want to bet Herbie plays with the trains at night?

I meant track cleaning and dust in general. It's part of the problem with garage layouts, but an unfinished basement can be dusty too.

Yeah, I'd keep my eye on him. Number 53 was a very jealous Beetle.
