sorry memory not too sharp. Had to be before as they switched from reserve tank to guage in 62 and lever type heater controls in 65.
I do remember buying reconditioned airplane oil to add to the crank case as it burned so much

An idea I've had to keep a layout from getting dusty when not use, is a removable cover. Imagine a rectangular frame the size of the layout with 4 legs. The frame could be sheeted with plastic or a drop cloth. The 4 legs(or 6 if needed) would fit into receiver pockets on the outside frame of the layout. The sheet would cover the removable frame and hang down slightly below the layout frame. I know it would be cumbersome to lift off and install because of it's large size. However, in SCVR's case, it could be susupended from the garage ceiling with a cable and pulley system.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

We've considered something like that before, though when you have a power wash hose and a built in air compressor tank there's no need when I can keep my engines clean when they are used for trains.

Man.....I've really been lacking on posting updates cause the layout is a lot different in a couple ways. More buildings, completed scenery, and so much more!
Taken yesterday
taken yesterday, redid the back corners in the foreground
this corner was changed from fine turf to course turf. Much better overall look and provides great track side photos. The left side was just redone in a darker green.
one of my favorite spots on the layout is the new station area I built myself. The platforms are cut to size home depot paint sticks, painted silver, the 2 lights are Walthers cornerstone and yes are hooked up and work. Benches are model power, and I built the walk ways myself out of wood grade crossings.
another view of the new station area
added 2 wood extensions so I could place my custom built 2 foot long engine house.
used up 18 of 21 turntable slots to store various SCVR locomotives.
took this one yesterday.
Tis all for now!

Well hyde the layout is coming together. I always like to be able to view the train as they ran. My Attic layout messes that up I have to settle for just 2 sides and bumping my head a lot. Keep up the good work. frank

Thanks Barry! And well technically my layout is "done" in figurative terms. A layout is never done as there will always be new things added, and changes made, however I consider my layout "done" in that I have no current plans for any more changes. Been focusing on engines again. But thanks everyone for kind words!
Frank I can't even imagine having an attic layout. For one our attic is like a furnace during the day being I'm in So Cal. Also I'm a 6'6 giant so I think I too would be banging my head a lot don't know how you do it

technically my dads but yeah. I have my own 72 that as of recently got repainted and is at our friends upholstery shop, got the headliner redone, carpet fixed up a bit, and after we removed and cleaned the windows, they put new rubber and chrome back on the outsides and popped them back in the car. I'll be out Saturday to bring it home, then we can progress on rebuilding the engine which is out of the car.
But anyways thanks everyone for the comments on the layout

My good friend Dave who works at the train store I've always been going to is a master of the weed look. He made the long 6-7 feet test track at their shop for HO and N gauge all ballasted and with weeds and shrubs etc, I really like it so I'll have him assist me more likely.

Pardon my stupidity Barry, but which one? The walthers machine shop with the big smokestack, the small red one to the right of the silver one, the silver one, the roundhouse, or my huge 2 foot shop? Don't matter to me as getting photos of all is rather simple.

I like how you made the station platform. I've always had the problem where the track right next to the station has platform access, but none of the adjacent tracks do. Part of that was just how narrow my layout was. You've come up with a good work-around.

The station is without a doubt at least in my eyes, probably the best project on the layout that I've done. More or less cause it looks good, the lights work, and it's easily accessible.
I knew I needed walkways so people wouldn't be isolated on that platform if dropped off from the mainline. So the walkways were an interesting project. Definitely intricate and delicate. I kept having problems with the wheels of rolling stock rolling on top of the walkways so I kept having to shorten the section in between the rail so that the wheels of engines or freight cars wouldn't hop up off the rails. Took a while but finally got it down. I thought about just having the one walkway which if you looked at the station by facing the wall behind the buildings etc would be just the one on the left. Then I thought well I have enough material left over to make a second and I wouldn't want "people" to have to walk to just one side of the platform so thus I made 2. I try to put my self in an HO figure's position as if it were real so I can get a feel of how things would look if I was an Ho figure, wouldn't that be the life
I have been using home depot paint sticks for 2 years now as platforms. last layout, the 4X8 first got them pretty early on then I redid them because they weren't straight then those were formed into the age of scenery by being painted, and later benches and detail were added. I'd considered putting new platforms back on this layout but never felt the need after placing the atlas station. I did now because I knew I needed trains to be able to stop at the station from both tracks. In terms of the platforms, no cost to me. Had plenty of paint sticks which are free from Home Depot to start with, and already had silver acrylic paint so it doesn't cost anything to do that nor drill holes but the lights, benches, people etc I didn't have which did cost a little $$.
Overall a very fun, and rather simple project. Didn't think a person could write so much about a station project

Working on the stations on my previous layouts has always been one of the highlights of construction too. The station is where the trains get tied in with the rest of the HO world.
I made a level crossing on my most recent layout, similar to your pedestrian crossing. Getting the portion in between the rails to the proper size was quite a pain. The earlier Tyco diesels with their MU-2 motors still can't cross it.... Luckily there are only a few inches of trackage beyond the crossing.

Woops, I'm 6'5 not much difference but yeah. I have never looked up when sitting in my beetle but I believe there's maybe 2 inches give or take of room left before my head hits the new headliner Problem is the steering column...Really have to extend my legs to get them under the column
Looks like one smooth ride now! Recently painted, majority reupholstered, and now putting all the new exterior pieces
as it arrived the day it was towed home 11 months ago.
seen here June after everything was removed. Damn bent bumper brackets really mangled the alignment of the fenders and body...but now...
it looks like this!! Body is all straight and smooth now. Sports a new coat of bright, light yellow. I didn't want a painfully bright yellow, I wanted a sleek, light, but still moderately bright, yellow. Looks fantastic now and so far I've got the door handles, VW emblems, side view mirror, decklid handle, tail lights installed minus the lens's, turn signal lights installed, caps in the trunk, and all the new clips that hold the chrome pieces onto the body. The engine is still out but now that it's home, work on reassembling the engine is in full force!
Of course it's still pretty far from completion but I'd say within 3 months it'll be done. Still got to install the fender rubber, trunk, and decklid rubber, tail light lens's, bumpers, and some more odd's and ends. All the parts going on it are new. So it will look brand new.
Thanks!

Maybe excess height is a side effect from the fumes given off by old Tyco motors! I was 6'2 in grade 9 and currently topped out (I hope anyway...) at just over 6'4.
The Beetle is looking great!

Geez, I'm starting to feel like a shrimp. The only time I felt really short was years ago when I was surrounded by a basketball team at the luggage carousel in Newark Airport.
Hyde, just cut some holes in the footwells and you should be fine.
The Beetle looks beautiful. Was the scorch mark on the trunk due to an engine fire?

I know a couple people who are taller then me Not a whole lot.
Yeah, owner who had it before me had an engine fire with it. The cause was probably one of the more common ones, fuel line broke and or got disconnected involuntarily, fuel got on the engine and sparked a fire. Didn't burn too long from what we were told. The idiots were using a fully enclosed fuel filter which is very dangerous. You want a clear/see through fuel filter so you know how much fuel is in it or if there are any leaks.
Luckily only the left side of the engine burned. It's currently in the process of being put back together by us as each weekend permits. It'll be brand new when finished, new cam shaft, new bearings, pistons, barrels, and repaired crankshaft. The engine wires will be replaced soon. I project it to be back in the car sometime in October. It probably won't be drivable till early November.
The fire really didn't do anything but ruin the wiring. Of which is no issue to my father who's been an electrician for ADT for over 30 years. I handle all the wrench turning and tinkering. Basically my dad gets the new parts or sometimes I will and I'll be the one to install them. I very much look forward to the day I crank the engine for the first time! There will be a video of that.
