One of the many train sets I got as a child was a Sears Royal Blue set, but I was never impressed with the tender pusher drive system. Has anybody stuck a different chassis under the 2-8-0 boiler to get a Mantua style drive in this beautifull engine? Anything but the PT tender drive. I have long thought about getting another one of these, espicaly after seeing the pics of them here. But I love to run and pull long trains, something the PT doesnt like. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. Mike

There's a couple members who have had luck using a CD-ROM motor in place of the original motor. Mantua's 0-8-0 is loosely based on the Tyco 2-8-0/0-8-0 series. I believe with some work and the right parts, a motor could moved into the firebox/cab area. Just not sure what gear combo would work.

Didnt IHC/Mehano reissue the 2-8-0/0-8-0 with a cab mounted can motor? I could have swore they did prior to the fall of IHC. I wonder if one of those drives could be swapped in without any major mods to the locomotive. Anybody have one of the IHC/Mehano 0-8-0s that can compare drives to the Royal Blue engine shell. Mike

As someone pointed out recently, the Mehano version of the Chattanooga was their Mikado stripped of lead and trailing trucks. I doubt it wold be a close fit. The IHC/Mehano 0-8-0/2-8-0 would be closer, since they used the same boiler tooling. They aren't cheap, though, and I don't know anyone who has tried it.
Search the forum for "Frankentorque" or "Chattanooga repower." There have been threads about the CD ROM motor retrofits.
