My LOTW is a slippery fellow, a diesel-hydraulic Krauss_Maffei custom painted, to what I don't know. I picked up 2 toher non-powered K-M units this year, so I can now have an SP and an RG unit as well as this customized one.

The AHM motor runs really smooth, would like to try to DCC this guy.

I figure I'll post a disco paint scheme to wax nostalgic over my years as an amusement park game hawker....

...an AHM GG1, in Conrail Bicentennial paint. Technically, it would have been the first and only GG1 with a riveted carbody...but I'm not gonna quibble...

At least that looks better than the modern fashion: MMA T-shirts and baggy cargo shorts.
I was going to post a BL2 from an ebay lot this week, but here's something I picked up at the train show today. Micro/Ben will love it, I'm sure.

That BN Center Cab is one mighty familiar engine- it looks like an AHM one. That's the one I have been working on for 2 months, as per my continuing posts in the Loose Ends forum.
Got two flea markets coming up this December here in Tampa- now I want another one!!!!!
Stay tuned for my final postings on my center cab project...

Ken, your Mantua 4-6-2 is real sweet! I always did like the CPR paint scheme.
My loco of the week is a Stewart SP Baldwin AS-616. This was the first run, with an Athearn drive, and not a very good one at that (gear problems). I'm still working on it to get it running smoothly.

| I've also got one of those SP Baldwins. Mine must have an improved drive, because it's the smoothest loco I have. It also has directional lighting. I did some research (rivet counting, I know) and this unit is actually numbered for a DRS 6-4-1500 (I think that's it, anyway it means it only had 4 powered axles). SP did have some AS-616's, just different road numbers, but they look the same.

The "bandit" scheme reffers to the MR locos aquired by SOO. SOO simply painted out the MR markings with black paint and then applied small SOO markings. This was just supposed to hold until the locos were sent into the paint shop. Seems several went for quite awhile before being repainted.

Gareth, here is a pic of the drive:
/tyco/forum/uploaded/Redwoods/as161drive.jpg
Pretty standard Athearn, except the trucks don't seem as well made as Athearn trucks are - for one thing, lots of openings where dust can get into the gears.
Adams, you piqued my interest and I found that we were both almost right. The book of knowledge (aka Wikipedia) lists SP #5203 as being a DRS-6-6-1500:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baldwin_DRS-6-6-1500
When I purchased the loco, it was simply referred to as an AS-616. And my resource for SP locos on the NWP (Fred Stindt's NWP book, vol. 2) refers to sister engine SP #5204 as an AS-615. Go figure! I'm learning something new every day, and I like it. Thanks for pointing it out.
Your comment though about 4 powered axles made me chuckle for a different reason. When I got this loco, one of the trucks was defective in that the idler gears to the inside axle would not mesh properly. Could never figure it out until recently. Now after all these years (and more mechanical experience) my solution was to simply remove those gears. So now only 5 axles are powered and it runs fine. My next step is to install an NCE D13SR decoder, front and rear LEDs, and clean up the wiring.

Thanks Thomas. The hard part is over. I got her running last night. A bit on the loud side but after some rewiring she seems to be running pretty well. I have some SP decals lying around ans always have SP lark and scarlett handy. Hope to get to her this weekend.

Thanks ken! Actually, what amazes me even more was the final price... $38 including s/h. I have been wanting one for a while...now I am at least have something to work with and should be able to get something pretty close. Duplicating the drivers and the valve gear will be the next task, but I think they will be a little easier to do.

I have to look no further than a mirror, my young tyco-holic. LOL. Seriously, though, these KM's are apparently popular on Ebay, the powered ones sell high. I bought a couple unpowered ones in a lot this summer, they weren't listed as KM's, so not many bidders found them. I got them fairly cheap, as KM's go. No, I don't wish to sell EITHER! THey're donor shells for my powered custom unit, so I can have a 3-fer. I'll keep my eyes open at shows, of course, I paid $25 for the custom powered one at a Timonium, MD show. Got a couple shows coming up in December, two small locals and a Greenberg Timonium, so I will check those.

That's funny; I was almost going to say that all the nickel silver is yellowed, like it was in a smoker's home. It's just in need of a through cleaning and lube. Those tar deposits make a good electrical insulator.
Go to Home depot and get a can of CRC contact cleaner, and blast out the motor.

A window cleaner like Glass Plus on a toothbrush should scrub it off. I've never had any problems with that hurting the paint, and it dries quickly.
The best way is to completely disassemble it and scrub all of the castings in warm soapy water, of course.

Sean ; * This is a very interesting kit. The New Haven made this loco very late, at the end of the steam era. All together like it is, it takes some imagination to see it. I have a project sitting awaiting free time to do. Most of my rough work is done. I, and this kit, dont have the disks to apply to the drivers. BLI did it in Brass recently. Mine uses the old reliable Tyco USRA Pacific for a start. This kit may also need a starting loco to rap around. Does it suggest what loco to start with? frank
