CVT;

I'm squinting, you can't see it but I'm squinting.

I mean this in a kind way; you're a kid go play in traffic, or kick a ball, throw darts. Get less virtual, you'll be glad one day you did! The rides over pretty quick.

Are you guys serious? You think this kid talks too much, so you post images suggesting someone will shoot themself in the head? You suggest he go play in traffic?

I really, really wanted to come back to this forum and go back to normal, but this behavior is disgusting.

did you see my comment, I forget where, that Walt has so many ho trailers and then something about a caterpillar Best Western!?

I was just wondering if you had tried to make them look more prototypical, and how succesful you might have been. I have several and I was wondering about how well they can be made to look on a layout.

Yes, I understand a cliche. Yes, I now you're not actually suggesting he do himself harm. I just agree more with the second statement about respect.

Back to trains: the KFC kit doesn't seem that hard to find. Last time I looked online they were going for a reasonable price.

Well B77,

I think a baseline of respect is just fine. I also think saying "that" (by this I mean an action or behaviour) bothers me, is fine to.

Several of us have been here a long time and put a lot of energy and knowledge into this site. I think it's reasonable to ask a newcomer to respect where they are. I was just at the Pub to have a pint with my oldest Pal, Father Bill. If some 20 something had started horsing around and making it near impossible to hold a conversation, I would go ask him to settle down some. Thats all I'm asking for. Humour, sure, heck even stupid funny at times but not dissonance which is what has transpired at times.

Best,
Gareth

Glad you can take a bit of humor, CNVIA. Some people obviously shot themselves in the foot over their slightly exaggerated "welcome back" signs. LOL. Oh well. I thought them both funny and somewhat over the top, too. Anyway, glad your grades are up, and I'll blow the dust off some of my closet queens one day for a non-existent layout I can't fit into my small house right now. Actually, I'm planning on designing an outdoor deck layout, portable and easy up-n-down, so I can run trains OUTDOORS in good weather. Will doodle some plans for it on the trip down to Wilmington, NC today to visit my stepson and girlfriend there. Hope to set foot on the beach while there, I miss going to the beach, been awhile. Anyway, all have a safe and happy T-giving day!

This is reminds me of something. It's a total change of subject, but I haven't mentioned it before. As some of you know, I'm a high school teacher. My state recently almost passed a law restricting how teachers can use the internet. It almost went through, but was successfully blocked at the last minute.

I'm all for protecting kids online, but if this law had passed, it would have been against the law for me to be a member of this forum. Any teacher or school administrator could not participate in any forum that allowed private messages to minors. Because we have the private message ability, that includes this site. Obviously this is anonymous, and they would probably never know it was me, but it would still be against the law.

The law was intended to target mostly social networking sites like Facebook, where many teachers have their students as "friends" and can converse with them privately, but it was very broadly written.

There's a lot to be said for both sides of the issue, and personally I don't communicate with students outside of school, but either way, they're working on a similar law. So if it passes I may disappear permanently.

B77, that sounds like an awfully Draconian solution. I guess the concern is over teachers having inappropriate relationships with their students? Why don't they punish those who actually break the law, instead of punishing the majority of innocent teachers? That would restrict your internet usage quite a bit.

Fly, meet sledgehammer.

B77:

It would never withstand a 1st Amendment challenge thank heaven!

We are over compensating...

I believe Yahoo has a minimum age of 13 and I'm gonna talk to Todd about invoking a similar guideline.

Kids need to be protected but not coddled.

Freedom and safety as Franklin observed are often adversaries...

Okay guys, I just have to say something, now that the subject of teachers and students is being mentioned.
I have a website for my program, administrated by the district IT people. I use it to inform parents and students of upcoming news, dates, etc. I have a district ( work ) email, which students can access, to send in homework, if sick, or for parents to communicate directly with me. I would never have a contact with a student otherwise, until they are graduated and in college ( I teach HS), but I do have several that I stay in touch with privately- one is a junior in power plant/ mech engineering at UTx/Austin. He is a first gen American who knows what the value of education means; another is a senior in civil engineering at my alma mater, who did all the arch drawings for a house up in Cape Cod when he was only 16, and is now applying to grad school for architecture; another is a PO3 US Coast Guard member, soon to be deployed ( his mom is a fellow teacher). Thing is, they have grown up and are friends, having moved well down the path of proving their worth as adults. I would never think of them as casual friends, as I was a mentor to them when they were my students- now I take great pride in knowing them as future professionals, taking small satisfaction in my ability to help them along their way.

We can't restrict free speech, especially in this hyper-communicative world we now live in; what we should do is be wise in our choice of how and with whom we communicate with. In our hobby, there are few enough young persons coming into it- that is a theme brought up almost weekly on the MR forums. I go to quarterly flea markets and see age contemporaries, senior citizens, and just a handful of young people.

This kid may be a pain, and should grow up a little ( or a lot )with respect to his Internet manners, but let's not belittle him with ad hominem responses. I always have felt that a kid with a sharp mouth usually has a sharp brain to go along with it, as verbal acuity is one characteristic of intelligence. Besides, who knows,
maybe he might be one of those future professionals that I have seen grow up as a teacher!

Hey SL:

I think it's fair to say NP's original "intervention" which was private, was about netiquette, Where things went array was when CVT decided he was going to drag everyone else into it so he could feel better. Now that's pretty normal for a kid not being able to discern constructive criticism from an attack on his character. But it would have been better if he had PM'd Todd or perhaps spoken to his dad who might have looked over his son's shoulder and figured out what was going on from a more adult perspective.

In any case I think we're moving toward some semblance of equilibrium...again!

Okay, let's call up the ghost of Rod Serling. We're headed into the Twilight Zone. I agree with everything Romcat is saying tonight.

This is why off-topic threads are good. We can discuss and clarify issues that come up on these boards due to human nature, even if they don't pertain to trains.

However, as far as the 1st amendment goes....

It's gone.

This is America. Shut up and conform. (yes, I know how to use sarcasm.)

Romcat, I'm not trying to argue here, I agree with you. I'm just telling you that this is true. There is no 1st amendment in this country anymore. It will happen, they're just arguing the details. Like I said before, teachers have been fired for less. Your reference to Franklin hits home, and puts me firmly on your side. I've been thinking that some of the "drama" on this forum is due to us not being able to talk face-to-face. I think that if we did, we would all agree.

Especially if it's over a good ale!

As to the First, too much blood has been spilled in getting it and hanging on to it thus far to hand it over to people who will never sacrifice anything but our freedoms.

the lack of respect in the title of this thread show's it all. he just seems like a trouble making little brat. that's right i said it. if i found out my kids was on online forums acting like this kid has, they wouldn't be allowed back on the computer. everyone can argue for his right to free speech all they want, but he is being disrespectful.

it did get old coming to this site just to see his username on 2-3 year old posts, 10-15 posts a day. if he had something to add it wouldn't have been a big deal, but just rambling on with B.S. or whatever. all he was doing was running his post count up to be a big boy. all he has done seance he's been here with us is cause a division in the rest of use that have been here for years & help build this site into the great place it is.

smokie you said it all,and i agree, free speech is one thing, but abusing it is another,my real question is what's his real age and name, any one can hide behind a fictitious name, which is the one failing of this site,if you have nothing to hide why hide it ,ken
