Every time I ponder the camel back locomotive configuration I wonder what it must have been like to work on them.

The engineer was stuck in a cramped cab stuck on the side of the boiler with the main rod right below his seat box threatening to crush him to death. I suspect that if the engineer needed to evacuate his post in the event of an emergency he had little chance to pull himself out of that tight space.

The fireman had it even worse, he was exposed to the weather and the air currents of his train while standing next to a pile of crushed powdery coal. On top of that he had that huge wooten fire box to fire which must have been a back breaking job!

Hey Scott. Yes that did happen. the main rod or side rod if not properly maintained once broken devastated the cab area. But you have to remember that on a standard steam loco, on any kind of accident. getting hit or hitting another loco that tender full of coal weighing a tremendous amount, it comes forward and crushed anyone still in the rear type cab. In accidents like that chances of survival are better in a side, center mounted cab. The accident I know of happened at 8th street station in Bayonne. A camelback powered passenger train starting to pull away from the station was rear ended by another train. Even with the loco rolling over on the engineers side the engineer lived and the fireman was crushed.
Running any stem locomotive was a dangerous job.

Hi Stephen, Now about railroads not having many camelbacks. Any railroad in a hard coal producing area. That is anthracite coal. Most likely owned or controlled mines. In mining this type coal mountains of slag, which is waste coal accumulate at the mine. This is the type of coal camelbacks were designed to burn. Nothing like getting you fuel needed to operate for free on very cheep. Because of this railroads in these areas ran mostly wide fireboxed locos designed to burn this waste coal called clum. There were thousands of them. That is what a camelback is and does. Railroads in these areas of hard coal had mainly camelbacks. They changed from center cabs to rear cabs for 2 reasons. they gave to railroad a more modern appearance, and they very large cabs and the crews liked them.
There was that myth about camelbacks not being allowed to be built. but no one can ever find a copy of a order like that which is said to have come from some government agency. No the camelbacks time had come, and off they went into history.

I remember reading an article in Railroad Magazine about camelbacks, and there was a part in there that was quite humorous. Usually, when one had to "go" in a normal locomotive, he went into the coal bunker of the tender. Now on a camelback, the engineer couldn't do that, so he either held it in or hung his rear out the side.

Well Don, It seems I was trying to get a point across on why camelbacks existed. And you, well I don't know. If I try to pronounce the words culm then clum it would seem they sound the same. It must have been a tough thing for a trained English teacher to figure which was the correct way to spell the word. But my old nasty English instructor had a answer and it was do as I say, or I'll hit you with this switch. So I became a electrician and learned to work with switches.
