I took a trip to Strasburg PA yesterday May 15 2014 for railfanning action. . . . . . . . . Mostly cloudy day with heavy rain at times. Sun came out occasionally. . . . . Stopped at the Red Caboose area and saw outdoor and indoor equipment. . There is also some vintage model trains for sale there. Very nice setup over there with the steam train, museum and some layouts in nearby buildings.

Two steam engines in action at the same time! You don't see that often!

Actually Microbus, there are no suppliers on the railroad. They used to have a large industry on the far west of the line in the village, but that ended years ago.
All of Strasburg's freight is done as trans=loading; a team track in their parking lot allows them to ship just about anything to be picked up locally by truck. It's become the salvation of several shortlines, and it's the kind of freight modeling we all could sure use on our layouts.
The Strasburg gets like 8 cars a week which motivates NS to want to interchange with them, and by serving out the logistics Strasburg makes some additional income by moving freight. They're brilliant about it though, because they milk this fact royally. There's a weekly "mixed freight" run during which they take a caboose or passenger car out to do the freight run, and they have "limited seating", making it one of the last mixed trains in the country. Best of all, they don't have a big enough diesel to move the train, and they've always got a steam locomotive lit-up so... steam freights!

I'm amazed that steam engines still pull freight on the Strasburg Railway. I thought they stopped doing that years ago. I need to go there someday.

Nice stuff! This video from my childhood has some good footage from the Strasburg railroad (starting at the 7:09 mark), not to mention some cool Lionel action at one point as well!
The Strasburg Railroad seems fond of having full crossing gate setups at their railroad crossings. Definitely not like Conway Scenic Railroad, which usually just has lights and bells at their crossings and the occasional crossbuck-only crossing. (Of course, the MBTA lines in my area have gates at nearly all the crossings, but they are main line railroads with 25-30 trains a day!) That GG1 photo sure looks neat too. I remember several Looney Tunes cartoons of the 1950s using what sounded like a recording of a GG1 locomotive speeding by (complete with doppler effect on horn) whenever a modern train was depicted (often running over Wile E. Coyote!)

Love the shots from strausburg. Been there many times myself. Most people don't realize that it runs through the heart of Amish country. The farm opposite the Cherry hill flag stop is one such farm. The last time I was there I tried to get a pic of the owner tilling his fields using a 4 horse team while standing on top of the harrows. I posted some pics a little while back showing the inside of the museum across the street from the overhead walk way. That place is awesome. Fantastic shot of the GG1. I bet Chops is drooling all over himself.
I assume that you are in the area regularly you must have dined at GOOD AND PLENTY! For those poor souls who have never been, it serves real Amish cooking and is served at long communal tables. It is worth the trip just to eat there.

This photo is of Long Island RR engine number 39 when it operated on Long Island during the 1950s. There is hope that she will be restored and operated by Strasburg Railroad within five years.

That would be awesome to see that bad boy running. The whistle for it sounds sleek, too. (I found it on a video online on the Strasburg 475 just now.)

Norfolk and Western J611 steam engine will visit Strasburg Railroad last weekend in September and most weekends in October 2019.

The LIRR G5 engine mentioned in an earlier post will take a few more years to restore. Still need to raise more money to complete the restoration of steam engine 39.

It looks like she's reenacting the wartime employment of women in the railroad shops when all the men were away fighting WWII. That crimson lip stick, the round glasses and the bandanna around the hair all kind of smack of the 1940s.

Went to the Strasburg Railroad today and took photos.

Former Canadian National mogul style engine built in 1910.

She pulls four cars today.

Bright sunny Sunday afternoon in fertile countryside.

Cars kept in immaculate condition.

Vintage auto completes the nostalgic scene.

Cute shanty located half way on the four mile track.

Horse and buggy here in Amishland.

They share the roads with modern vehicles.

More photos from paradise without worries.

Pleasant roads all around Lancaster county among the Amish.

Stately impressive Lancaster Station in the early evening.

Last train of the day heads back to Strasburg.

Modern crossing signals among the Amish way of life.

Pristine right of way along the four miles and a half route.

Another crossing in the farmland countryside.

Worldly events should not exist here.

Shanty at Cherry Hill.

Looking east at Red Caboose Motel crossing.

Picnic area half way on the route.

During peak season two steam trains meet here.

Looking west at Red Caboose Motel crossing.

At Leaman Place Junction where Amtrak meets the Strasburg Railroad.

Wish they would add a stop here for Amtrak passengers.
