You know, I just noticed that pretty well every album by my favourite band, Electric Light Orchestra, has ONE song about trains on it.

Train of Gold, Last Train to London, Across The Border, and a few others.

Weird, but awesome!

Hey MM. Never heard of that band...what genre?

Interesting observation. Trains seem to have some sort of poetic appeal, yes? A few of the bands I like have songs about trains: Last Train Home, Night Train, Crazy Train (BFMV cover).

Yes very awesome

What genre? Hmm that's tough...they were sort of a rock band early on, but with stringed instruments like cellos as well.

Then they aqquired a disco sound, and finally went back to their original sound, with a bit of pop in there.

Most of their stuff sounds quite modern, although they played in the 70's and early 80's.

Yeah I guess there's a certain "romance" to travelling by train, or something that makes them special. You don't hear too many songs about ships or airplanes, although everyone knows there's many a truckin' song out there.

I know plenty of songs about ships...they're all about sad/bad things though O_o Train songs seem a little happier

I watched the vids you and Shaygetz posted. They sound pretty good...not enough guitar for me though. I like alot of punk stuff...probably why I've never heard of them This is more what I like:

not only trains, but the water... weather... rain, "Can't get it outta my head" "Sweet Talking Woman" (where the rain comes in...")
"Mister Blue Sky" "Evil Woman"

Try getting the "ELO Greatest Hits" compac disk!

That guy was a railroad junkie!

Trains and weather/water related things.

...peaceful and cleansing.

Thanks Sheygets for the ELO link!

Cheez,

I recognize "Night Train" from GnR and "Crazy Train" by Ozzy. Who is "BFMV"?

MM 1498,

Sorry to say, I was never a great fan of ELO. I was too busy buying KISS albums at that time. But I did like a couple rock bands that played "odd" instraments. Ever listened to Kansas or Styx? Don't think either group had a tune about trains though.

My current band choices don't do much with trains either. But Megadeth did a song called "Train of Consequences". Not about trains, but at least the word appears in the title.

Shaygetz: I've heard that song before...not by maralyn manson though. That version seems a little....dark? I like punk, ska, rock...that sorta stuff.

Hypop: I was actually thinking of Night Train by the Bouncing Souls. And BFMV is short for Bullet for my Valentine...they're music is metal/hardcore rock. I like them cuz they've got some sick guitar riffs, without the screaming singer.

Wow you like some good stuff there, Shaygetz.

Hypoponera, I've heard a couple of songs by Kansas, and my dad had a couple of Styx albums.
I've only listened to Kilroy Was Here, and I like Cold War and, of course, Mr. Roboto.

Actually it was my dad's old records that got me into ELO. Since then I've found 4 of their albums on my own. ALL on vinyl. Only way to go.

And Cheez, the most "rock-like" song by ELO in my opinion is Do Ya. And for some reason I think it was in a recent advertisement?

Matt, my music made for some interesting comments in my circle of friends. They all claimed to love music but could never seem to get out of the Aerosmith/Led Zepplin/Rolling Stones rut. Heck, I thought even Kiss had one or two decent tunes back then.

Phllastines!

Gabriel Faure' Requiem in particular The Pie' Jesu

That lads is music. As good as it gets.

I tried to find a decent youtube link to provide an example , but having spent two years hanging around Westminster Choir College in Princeton, NJ. , whlie my ex completed her Masters in Choral Conducting, I got to see and hear the best. I saw my wife as part of a choir perform Handels Messiah and the Verdi Requiem with the New York Philharmonic. The latter was done as a concert on PBS for the people of the US on the first anniversary of 9/11. It was extra-ordinary! I doubt any "pop" musicians whether it's Kansas, ELO (Had tapes in Quad Stereo back in the day) or Kiss or whatever could even read the music they performed.

There are exceptions from the popular musical genres though. I saw Eddie van Halen at a club in Toronto once play some Jazz Fusion of the Toccata & Fugue by J.S.Bach. He is a heck of a musician, but thats rare in popular music.

Btw;

Some of you may enjoy this....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hg8Fa_EUQqY

It'll make classical music seem a little less stuffy!

Just my opinion of course your mileage may vary!?

Hey funny thing, ELO's very own Jeff Lynne did a few songs for one of my favourite movies, Electric Dreams.

There was a certain scene in the movie in which a computer plays electronic tones right along with an orchestra, which was of course playing Toccata & Fugue.

Here are a few of my train related faves.

Not a huge fan of REM, but I always loved "Driver 8."

"Lucretia My Reflection" by proto-goth band Sisters of Mercy.

There was one band with the chops for it, and though they never wrote any train-related songs, many of their instrumentals sounded very much like steam locomotion. Here's "Ashes Are Burning" by Renaissance, split into two parts due to length. This song always reminds me in part of the industrial revolution and the western expansion of the railroads. Ashes are burning the way.

Cool Topic-- Glad to see MM 1498 liking ELO for his age. I remeber roller skating to those songs in the 70's and early 80's. Here is a group of female performers that are hot and awesome with the violin and cello

If you want a great lead guitarist, listen to Wolf Hoffman of the German metal band Accept. His rendition of "Fur Elise" is amazing!! It's the solo in the song "Metal Heart". But the frontman is definately a screamer!

Hey Shaygetz,
I had thought that Kansas was dead and buried! I stumbled into a cd called "Live at the Whisky" and thought it was an old recording. Imagine my surprise to learn it was new! Still sounds good to me!

Warren Zevon... Night time in the Switching Yard...

Okay, off the main topic, but perhaps just as elegant as ELO... ELP: Emerson, Lake, & Palmer.
They took classical music and synthesized it. Granted, quite a few bands of the time did it as well.

But, in a Japanese fare, ISAO TOMITA had a piece of music called "Pacific 231"... yes, an electronical train that passes through your ears, with bells, chuff chuff, whistles, and that famous "ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, dang, dang, dang, dang, dang, dang... as it passed a grade crossing warning bell...
I... I had to wait over two years for the CD "Kosmos"... by TOMITA...

Anyway, that's another $0.02 Canadian from me. Perhaps information a little lower in face value, but none-the-less notable.

The movie "Dazed and Confused" is not a documentary. I had my own skates, an 8 track player, 28 bongs and a never ending supply of medicinal herbs and spices as a carney in an amusement park---think Rev. Jim from "Taxi"---I do not miss those daze.

Just a silly little update for ya Hypoponera...I went out and bought the album Paradise Theater by Styx.

Great stuff. Even though it was their most popular album, I hadn't known of it before. My dad is the one to thank here.

Oh, and I got it on vinyl, so I get to look at the fancy laser etching on the 2nd side.

Ahhh, yes, the big hair 80s...spent the first half of that decade listening to stuff like this in a 50,000 watt surround sound stereo enhanced den of iniquity called Hammerjacks in downtown Baltimore. Years later, mercifully, the town bought the Cleveland Browns and leveled the place to put in Raven's Stadium.

And one you may remember is The Blues Brothers sang 'She caught the Katy' Katy is Missouri - Kansas - Texas Railroad.

And there is still time for someone to write a country song called 'The new train I want, ain't get'n it for cheap'.

Well I'm still in the process of learning to drive. So I need to have someone who has their license with me.

The absolute soonest you can drive here is 16 years and three months.
Once you're 16, you can get your beginner's license, which I have right now.

Then, if you take a driving program, you can get your full license in 3 months.
However, if you're like me, and you're not part of a training program, you have to wait 6 months.

Still, I've only been learning for about 2 months now, and both my parents are amazed at how good I am.

Here's another update. Yesterday I bought an old floor model stereo from the local antiques dealer. (I guess it's kind of an antique. )

It's a vast improvement over the dinky little thing I was using before. It features AM/FM radio, automatic turntable, and of all things...an 8-track player!

And believe me, it's LOUD. At 50% volume, I have to cover my ears.

The guy gave me all the 8-track tapes he had, which sounds great, but all he had was Christmas albums and classical music.

I think he saw I was a bit disappointed by that, so he let me pick an LP to throw in as well.
I let my dad pick it out though, because he seems to know what I would like more than I do.
And I was right, he picked a Bee Gees album from before they went disco.

By the way, if any moderators/admins think I'm getting off topic, please say so. I realize this has absolutely nothing to do with model trains.

Anyway, here's some pics:

Boy did my dad get a chuckle when I asked where the "Rewind" button was...

Ahaha!! That is sweet! I have something like that in my basement. It's got a light-up dial on the front so you can tune into radio stations. Very epic...I think it still works

Yeah man! Gotta love old radios. Nothing more nostalgic, and just plain cool. Do yourself a favour, crank that sucker up!

Here's a little something I found a few weeks ago, but forgot to mention. "The Sounds of Shunting", made in 1966 for Decca by the Argo division in London.

It's a fun little record to listen to, and features recordings of small steam engines doing exactly what the title describes - shunting.

The recordings were made in 1956-1957, in railyards near Nuneaton, Saxby and Preston, in the UK.

The record itself is in amazing condition, I would not be surprised if it was not played before I bought it.

Talking bout train songs, here is my favourite:

Neil Young & Crazy Horse: Southern Pacific (In this song Neil makes his guitar sound like the humming of a diesel-electric, very cool!)

Neil is a real train guy, also involved in Lionel, years ago I ve seen his layout in Classic Toy Trains magazine...

Okay, I'll admit, it does have a sorta "disco" sound to it. But believe me, it's not Saturday Night Fever or anything like that.

The album is called "Main Course".

Shaygetz,
You used to go to Hammers?
That place was legendary!
I celebrated my 21st birthday drinking Jagermeister, and rockin' out with Wrathchild America.
Also speaking of ELO,I picked up a Sweet Talking Woman 45 rpm record and others this past weekend,it's pressed from clear purple styrene.

Carl T.
ps. sorry MM,I never did dig the Bee Gees, not my thing.

We took a trip to Halifax this weekend, and before we left I decided to look up any sort of stores that sell used vinyl records.

Sure enough, there was one listed that looked pretty good, so we stopped in for a bit.

This place was great, I really should've brought some more money. They had just about every ELO album, all on vinyl, for very reasonable prices.

I wanted to buy some Queen albums, and a couple of Kansas ones, (decided to check out all their stuff after you mentioned them shaygetz) and some other stuff, but did not have enough money.

I decided to buy two ELO albums, but I WILL save up enough money to buy all of them. I have to!

Oh yeah, I couldn't stop laughing at my dad, he was like a kid in a candy store, at Christmas time.

After that, I met up with a woman who was selling her old 8-track tapes. I've got some pretty good ones now, Deep Purple and Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell to name just a couple.

Here's the records I bought, plus just a few of the 8-tracks I bought as well.

Collecting records is like a second hobby for me, although it has not a thing to do with model trains of course.

I'll start posting some stuff about trains after Christmas probably.

I've got a few 78's kickin' around, they were mostly my grandfather's. I have bought a few myself though, I especially like the Louis Armstrong one I have.

Oh, and I forgot to mention, before we left Halifax we stopped by my uncle's place, he said I could borrow his old records for awhile.

He admitted that he did not pick a very good place to store them though because the records on one end of the box were in excellent condition...

...and the records on the other side of the box were, uhh...well look.

Haha, when I looked at it, he jokingly said, "I wouldn't play that one if I were you."

And I won't, besides obvious reasons, I'm waiting for a new needle to arrive for my stereo. Lotsa perfect records were skipping like crazy.

I've also gotta thank my mom for spreading word of my need for 8-track tapes to everyone with ears...I've got a couple of people looking for their old collections and they are willing to give them to me. In fact, one of her friends said she had a whole wack of CCR tapes somewhere. AWESOME!

Well that's enough rambling on for tonight, I'm off to finish my homework.

Here's a little project I did just now, re-splicing an 8-track tape!

Yeah I bought an 8-track version of The Eagles:Greatest Hits. However, the woman selling them pointed out that the tape had snapped long ago.

Well, being a bit of an Eagles fan, I figured maybe I could get it fixed at some point. Then I read on the internet that all you need to do is open the casing, and reconnect it using Scotch tape.

I've got a few that also snapped when I played them, this is only because the glue holding the tape together is old and is no longer adhesive. Basically, the tape would snap when it switched tracks.

Here's a before and after picture, the Eagles tape I fixed is on top and a Queen tape that I need to fix later is on the bottom.

I was kinda surprised at just how simple these things are on the inside, I thought there would be two spools like on a regular cassette tape.

I don't know who Alan Hicks is, but

A. He had good taste in music,
B. He should've taken better care of his 8-tracks!

Oh yeah, I also changed the name of this topic because the old title didn't seem to fit as well as it used to.

I added some new equipment to my stereo today.

First is another set of speakers. There are output jacks on the back of the stereo for adding more speakers, and a switch to control whether you want sound coming out of just the built-in speakers, or both the built-in ones and external ones.

Well, there are two built-in speakers, and they both are 5 watts. Not exactly the greatest. But I decided to dig out my dad's old stereo system, which is broken. The speakers however, are just fine, and work quite well.

Oh yeah, and they each have an output of 100 watts.

So, here's the stupidest looking, but great sounding setup I have now.

Secondly, I messed around with the plugs inside, so now I can use my CD player or cassette player, or whatever in one unit. It's pretty cool.

Speaking of cool, these speakers look pretty killer when you take the covers off.

1.Electric Light Orch.-ELO's Greatest Hits
2.Led Zeppelin-In Through The Out Door
3.Talking Heads-True Stories
4.Hank Williams Jr.-Greatest Hits
5.Electric Light Orch.-Face The Music
6.The Power Station-Self Titled

Ooh good stuff indeed!

Those are two very good ELO albums, I almost bought the Greatest Hits one but I already had most of the songs on their original albums anyway.

Brothers in Arms I have on CD, and Bob and Doug's album is fairly common here in Canada. It's a goodun.
If you haven't seen their movie, "Strange Brew", you should try to find a copy...

Speaking of 45's, when we went to Halifax, my dad bought one. He said it was fairly rare, a song called "Timothy" by The Buoys. Apparently radio stations banned it because it tells the story of trapped miners resorting to cannabilism. Yikes!

And, last thing for tonight, my uncle found me some more 8-track tapes at the Salvation Army. Funky alligator skin case included! He should be able to drop them off tomorrow...

Here they are! 60's stuff, a lot of "greatest hits" type tapes. Janis Joplin, Deep Purple, The Doors, Santana, etc. Sorry for the blurry pics.

I've also spliced 8-tracks tapes too. And made an unsalvagebale one better:
