Here are a couple photos of another rebuild. It started as another AHM GP18. I replaced the handrails with Athearn stantions and bent brass wire. I added wire grabs chassie mounted the couplers. The pilots were filled with sheet plastic and the steam generator equipment on the shorthood roof was removed. I stripped the paint and sprayed on the GTW colors. Markings are from micro-scale. The original motor was replaced with a can motor and single flywheel. Electrical pickup was changed to all wheel pickup. http://hypoponera.tripod.com/hypoponeras_photos/index.album?i=2&s=1 http://hypoponera.tripod.com/hypoponeras_photos/index.album?i=3&s=1

Hypoponera: Perhaps it just the marque (I'm a sucker for Grand Trunk motive power), but I'm even more impressed here than with the NdeM Geep. This is very good modeling--a most impressive retrofitting of an AHM shell most would write off as a second-rate platform for reworking. Tip of the cap to you, sir! Let's see more. Glad you liked the GTW! I have no interest in the GTW myself. But I stumbled into a photo of this exact loco rolling past my house in Indiana. I decided I just had to have a model of it in my collection!

I don't know how but I missed this post but I did. That is one handsome loco and it looks more like a P2K than AHM. Well crafted!

Hey Mike:
I'll try and scan tomorrow, and send you a gorgeous MR (March `74) Cover shot of a GTW GP. It's in the old Green and Yellow paint scheme. Might make you want to repaint that GP!?

The motor is from MicroMark tools. They sell it for $24.99. I got it on sale for $10. The flywheel was bought at the local hobby shop. I think it was made by NWSL. I think MicroMark sells the same flywheel.
I have found several good motors on ebay. While in the HO section, do a search for motors. You'd be amazed at the pile of new motors going for next to nothing. The AHM shell will hold a motor of about 20mm wide. A shorter motor would allow easy installation of a second fly.
Hey AF, I thought you had seen this one way back.
Romcat, love to see the photo. I think I had seen the colors and liked it, but couldn't find decals for it.

Hey Ant-Man:
The decals are around... Don't know if they are GP specific.

Nice job on the Geep, Hypop. I thought the motor looked like the ones in the Micro-Mark catalog. I think my LHS sells them too. How does it perform? Good low speed?

The motor is great! Well worth $24.99. I'm just too cheap to spend that much when I know they put the motor on sale for half off atleast once a year. I usually buy 3 when they go on sale.
Motor specs: 5 pole, skew wound. no load @12V: 9800 rpm and 0.06 amp nominal Typical 24 gm-cm load @12V: 8755 rpm and 0.25 amp nominal Stall torque @12V; 160 gm-cm and 1.50 amp nominal
The motor is perfectly sized to fit in the AHM hood. It's tight, but requires no sanding of the shell. Also, the twin shafts are 2 mm in diameter.
This loco performs very well. It is one of my "Atlas beaters"! It has a lower minimum smooth speed then an Atlas 6 axle GE. It's top speed is slower then stock AHM by a long ways.

How did you connect the shaft ends to the motor? Also, how did you mount the motor? Thanks very much!

The spline shafts are either Athearn or A-Line. I use both interchangably. The motor is glued in place with clear silicon sealent. It holds the motor and absorbs some sound and vibration.

Those motor specs look great, so I'll keep it in mind for future projects. Mehano uses shafts and universals in their diesels that are clones of Athearn drive parts, except that they fit a 2mm shaft. That creates all sorts of possibilities. [^]
