Hey Guys:

Mine are buried in a box from my move, so does anyone know if the AHM 424 and RS-2 have 8 wheel drive? It looks like they are both 4 wheel drive based on HO-Seeker exploded views!?

Hey:

Yeah thats what I remembered. Same disease as Tyco and others. I mean 4 wheel drive??? Sure simplisity and no pulling power.

Tony's AHM page actually says the Austrian made 424 is 8 wheel drive but I just dug out my NIB 424 CNJ Lifeguard and only the front truck is powered. I was hoping to use the AHM RS2 as the basis for starter sets that I'm constantly creating for guys who have kids that I know. I wanted the loco to be an Alco, but as of now the inexpensive AHM GP18 is a cheap decent choice.

I do that too from time to time. It's a great way to know they're getting a decent start in the hobby without stretching the coin too much.

I think Model Power made the 8 wheel drive RS2. (same drive as the GP18)
I have one around here somewhere that I plan to detail.

The GP18 was sold under the AHM name but manufactured by the same company in Yugoslavia that made the dual drive Model Power locos and the Life/Like C415. Some of these evolved into the IHC locos.

So Ray:

I'm confused.

Are you saying my AHM RS-2 shell (dummy) will fit on the MP GP-18 chassis?

No, The Model Power RS-2 frame is different from the AHM GP-18 but the drive components are the same. same motor and trucks (different side frames) The AHM RS-2 although it looks similar is a different design.
I will have to dig out the MP RS-2 and post a few photos comparing it to the AHM GP-18.
I have an IHC C415 apart I can compare also.

Hi Ray:

Maybe I'll put my LV RS-2 shell on my soon to be abandoned Hobbytown RS3 chassis. THe long hood from that which is pretty pranged is getting cut up to raise the LH on another HT RS3 to help create an RS-3M as used by the D&H and run short hood forward.

On the other hand I make put a Cary GP7 LH on the HT RS3 Chassis and create a RS-3M as used by the MKT!?

Fun to think about!?

Those would be some interesting kit-bashes.
Here's a photo of the dual drive Model Power RS-2 chassis.

This is an AHM GP-18 I am piecing together.

These are from an IHC C-415. The motor and driveshafts were improved but the truck gearboxes are the same as the MP RS-2 and AHM GP-18

All the C424s I have seen have only the front truck powered. However, with some added weight, they pull very well! The motor looks like it was meant to have both trucks powered at some point. Keep in mind that loco mechanisms do change over time. The C424 might have been all wheel drive when first introduced and changed later as a cost cutting thing.

The AHM RS2 came with only one truck powered. But the motor was much stronger and more reliable then the pan cake motor of Tyco or Bachmann. Again, add weight for improved pulling power. The RS2 shell was later given a new chassie/mechanism with all wheel drive. This is the loco imported by Model Power.

Both of these locos can be repowered. I have a C424 posted some where. The old RS2 is a bit harder as you need a smaller motor to fit into the original motor mounting.

Hey Hypoponera:

Can't find that C424 posting. Mine is a NIB CNJ Lifeguard unit which I'd really like to set up for 8 wheel drive.

Can you see if you can find that posting you mentioned?

Thanks,
Gareth

Romcat,

Stay in the AHM section, just scroll down 12 threads and you should see the post for a C424. A bit further down are my NdeM and GTW GP18s as well.

Heres my AHM C-424 from ebay...4 wheel drive with a joint for a rear truck....It didnt run when I got it...had to re-solder the hot lead from the brush connection under the fuel tanks, and a headlight wire...one squirt of WD and it runs great!...gonna paint it but havn't decided which road yet....gonna shave a couple of adhesive weights and put them over the rear truck..not bad for $6....

Hasn't anyone noticed that when large photos are put into this site that it is very hard to use this site. Smaller photos work just as well.
