Just picked up a 0 8 0 Chattanooga with tender, it look pretty new as the smoke oil has never been opened and the tag above the bell is still in place, however it rugs sluggishly and also has issue with power at some of the switches that my athearn train does not have problems at
Any ideas of what kind of maintenance needs to be done? I am sure that the greese or oil is probably dry , just looking for a step by step list, sorry I am pretty new at trains

Hi, John. You are correct, if the train has sat for years, the grease is probably dried out. On these, I think the drive is in the tender, you'll need to take the motor assembly out and disassemble it to clean it up and remove the dried up grease. For the most part, it's fairly simple, the tiny little gear on the armature shaft holds on the big gear, so once you remove the little shaft gear, you can remove the big one, and then the gears on the wheels themselves. A little alcohol will clean off the old grease, and you can relube it. I use white grease, or you can buy specialty model train grease. you will probably want to acquire some special oil for the armature shaft, like Labell #101 or something similar. Or 3-in-1 would probably work just as well. Just a DROP, small one, on ONE side only with the gear, the other side doesn't need it. That should take care of your lube needs. Hope it's running well soon!

Is it doing the bumpety-bump on the ties? Then without totally re-wheeling the entire setup, you are stuck. Meant to be used on Code 100, so if it's hitting the ties, you're gonna have to accept that it won't run on 83.

I got the clementine 0-8-0 from my dads collection, i ran it for a little while and the smoke unit worked after more than 30 years of being in a box, pretty amazing but then the motor blew out, now it carries a bachmann spectrum vanderbilt tender on it and its a dummy for now
I buy, repair, and collect http://scvr.weebly.com/ http://seyboldlocomotiveworks.weebly.com/ http://www.youtube.com/user/TheDeputation?feature=watch Hyde.
