In the next few weeks I'm planning on tearing down and rebuilding several Tyco PT engines. Is there anything to clean once I take the motor block apart? I know the brushes and springs can be cleaned using rubbing alcohol. Anything else?

Thanks!
cheez

Yes, the commutator pads on the armature should be examined, and cleaned if it's black with filth, instead of a nice copper sheen. clean out any build-up between the copper pads, too, gently scraping any crud from between the gaps. Burnish with super-fine sandpaper ( 1000 grit ) or one of those green scrubby pads to a copper luster. That's about it.

I use rubbing alcohol, sometimes electrical contact cleaner from a auto parts store if its real dirty! One tool I like is a cleaning brush from a hair clipper set. The bristles are plastic and perfectly stiff!

Rubbing alcohol is fine, but 90% is better. Plastic safe contact cleaner is very good at degreasing, and both are safe for all motor parts. Soak the brushes in just about any solvent to remove any oil they've absorbed.
