I know this is Mantua talk but this seemed to be the place to get noticed. I just got a Mantua PC 430 Alco with 4301 on the cab sides, off the "bay", and as I tried to run it I noticed 5628 on both sets of number boards. I also have a 430 with 5628 on the boards and cab as well. I don't think the boards were switched out. Does any one think this was another attempt by Tyco to use up 5628 number boards they had left over? AF

Yessir...I have this one, as well as a GP-20 Santa Fe (blue/yellow) that has 5628 for reporting marks, but 4301 in the number boards. Go figure.
They must have outsourced these two to the Mayberry plant...and it must have been on Otis' shift when they ran production! [:D]

| My MIB President's C430 came with 5628's as well. They are easy enough to swap if so desired, so I don't put any stock in this as a collectability aspect.

The PC Alco with 5628 reporting marks does exist, so I don't see it as a stretch of the imagination that Tyco did build some with 4301 marks but 5628 numberboards, and some could have been switched-out as well. The 5628 was not a selling point and I didn't know it untill I stumbled on it by accident. This one, by the way, was advertised for parts and won't run yet. It had the rivets drilled out and had a black screw and a hex-wrench-type nut that looked as if it belonged on a pistol holding things in place. The shell looked new inside as if never run, but the brushes are worn and may need replaced. It had a complete set of handrails except for 2 missing stanchions on the short rails which was worth the sale price. The armature turns sort of rough but doesn't looked burned. The first one I got was missing 1/2 of a plow and the attached steps, this one has a cracked plow, that is hard to see. I'm still happy!

TOR, Wouldn't you like to talk to someone who worked for Tyco and find out how and why things were done and what was produced?

Yes. Myself and 2 others are in a continuing conversation on how to best approach this...without it seeming like, "Hi, I'm a 36 year-old internet nut who STILL plays with Tyco trains...can we talk?" [:0]
...As someone else -who shall go nameless- has so eloquently put it. [:D]
As soon as I can get my employment situation ironed out (I have been laid off since Nov. 17th)...and get into a classroom and start teaching soon, everything pertaining to researching Tyco further will remain on hold. There is an intense interest, but I must focus on the job thing each day (weekends included).

OK, so that wasn't addressed to me... but you have NO IDEA how badly I would love to ask those questions. Mostly out of sheer, genuine, loving curiosity...
And partly with abated-brickbat, "WHY did you squeeze out such inconsistent paint jobs? WHY did you make the CP boxcar BLUE? WHY did you stuff american reporting marks on the right-side? WHY did you release a nice high-cube double door WITH ROOFWALKS?"
Ahh... who couldn't love Tyco?

It would be nice if someone who is really motivated could get Tyco staffers to attend a national train show and give a presentation. I mean that the national train show would advertise this as an promotion.[^]
