I was given a Tyco Cattanooga 2-8-0. When I first ran the engine, it smoked briefly. I have tried putting smoke fluid in the stack and under the bell but niether worked. If it goes under the bell, how do you get it in the tiny tube. Also, how do I clean smoke fluid from the track, and is there any way I can improve the engine's (actually tenders's) traction?

I believe any company's smoke fluid should work in the TYCO Chattanooga 2-8-0. If you're not familiar, the loco's headlight bulb is what I think warms the oil aka smoke fluid and eventually makes it smoke. It really takes only very small amounts to get it to work well...and then it doesn't work long before it's dry. If there's too much smoke fluid it may need to burn it off.
The smoke fluid only needs to be filled from the tiny hole where the bell sits...yep that's not easy to fill. I would suggest using a syringe...my printer's re-fill ink cartridges come with 'em. Rubbing alcohol cleans them up following an ink filling and then they're good to graduate up to being smoke fluid fillers.
The smoke fluid or oil does build up. I had a Bachmann Southern Pacific 4-8-4 War Baby that curiousity finally got the better of me and I filled up it's smoker and let 'er rip...the engine smoked fine but ended up with oil residue all over the boiler; cab roof; and even back on the tender roof. Yuck.
My suggestion is to run a wet track cleaner following any steam excusions with smoking locos. The IHC Cleaner Caboose works well for this job.
Now for those tractions tires...take a look on the forum here under the TYCO Maintenance & Repair Shop section and review the posting from December titled..."my CLEMENTINE engine won't run!" An explanation of the TYCO traction tires is included there and should benefit your efforts to re-tire that tender.
Good Luck and let us know how it works for you...

Here are some photos of the smoke unit.
The heating elemement is not the headlight. It is directly below the smoke stack. There is also a bellows that puffs out the smoke. It operates off a cam on the axle of one of the main driving wheels.
