At a semi-local flea market on Sunday, I found a bin of older Matchbox, guy wanted $5 each. Spotted two of the small yellow Shunter diesels, and purchased one. Had thought about powering one, so I took it to work today, and drilled out the 5 rivets holding it together. After I got it apart, I drilled out the exhaust stack hole, and also put a small hole in the roof. I found an obsolete LED and pushed that thru the roof. I found a nice aluminum "muffler" and mounted it vertically to route the exhaust over the cab. Not sure what mini-motor and truck I can find to power this, maybe a trolley motor. I'm thinking of putting red stripes on the back, and haul my Lionel HO Nuclear waste car with it, with the red LED on top flashing. That's the dream, who knows what 'll happen. Maybe another bench-top dust-collectin' project like my others. Well, here's the start of it, anyway -

Anyone else tried to power something this small before? It's smaller than my Tyco T227 diesels.

Ooops, had a brain sneeze...stuck a watch battery between the LED legs, and it lit up nicely! There's what it'd look like, sort of.

tinkered with the very same thing. Not powered, yet. But added some details. Should make an o.k. loco with that cast metal body.
Unspoken expectations are premeditated failures.

Hi AMC_Gremlin_GT,
I have a couple of those Matchbox trains in my collection. Cool idea you have. Maybe one of your turbo train chassis will work in it. I can't wait to see what you do.
Thanks for sharing.

Update. To Power One Of These, I Belive A 1 Truck Power Torque Would Work. Use The Sideframes Of The Stock Chassis. It Should Work. If I Can Get Ahold Of Mine Ill Work On It.

only issue I see with this is the PT is one side pickup only you may do better with a NWSL power truck or something similar

I'd like to find one of those...I have the power trucks from a couple Bachmann cable cars that would be perfect---they even come with spoked wheels for added character...

The T227 is Tyco's centercab switcher, it's smaller than the Hustler switcher.
THis is what they look like. These are the earlier 1960's era Tyco, not the '70's and later. These were probably made by Mantua.

That's the easy way, CN...anyone can do that. My way is to find it in the corner of a junk shop/thrift store/flea market for 50 cents. I've found my hobby dollar goes much farther when I start out with a wallet full of patience...

I noticed at a hobby shop one time, they had these teeny tiny can motors, for small-than-slot-car use. Wasn't much bigger than 1/4 inch diameter, and 1/2 inch long. I've seen similar motors in those little R/C helicopters, too, the cheapie foam ones. They'd probably fit inside that N hustler body. Getting it geared would be a challenge. Maybe an N Hi-F unit? Rubber power! Worth looking into.

Im going to make totally new wheels for it and axles, and use belt drive attachted to the wheels for movement. The Wheels will Be Modified Gears to use the belt drive. It will hopefully work. Tried rubber bands, and it was terrible. They kept Slipping off. And Im thinkin Slot car motor! Super fast Switcher!

Here's a comparison of the Tyco T227 to the RSO GE centercab and Hustler models. Definitely smaller than the more common 44-ton models.

I believe the T227 is designed after the Whitmore industrial diesel, with the automobile type grilles on either end. At any rate it's smaller than the GE which is smaller than the Hustler. Only thing missing from this line-up is my 15-tonner, based on a gandy dancer chassis

Did you ever think of having a powered box car behing the hussler pushing it. You get the same results. The train moving down the track. There were kits made to power box cars. frank

No, never really gave it much thought. A couple reasons - the kits were old, so are old-school and not using modern motor tech. And where do you find them now? They were rare then, and no new ones made now. I haven't seen any of those kits anywhere. Not at shows, not on Ebay. "course, you got to SEARCH on the auction sites for them, and I don't...because I don't have a name for them to search on. "we'll go round in circles..." . That would be cool, or even have a haunted caboose or boxcar that can move on it's own. Give me some search terms to use, and I'll keep looking out for one.
