I finally took my cute little "joe" down to my hobby bench, and hooked it up to some power tonight ( picture from outside Sunday shot). The motor fired right up, and ran smoothly. One of the side rods is bent, but a little tweaking with some pliers ought to fix that. Rather quiet for an old motor, just had a slight whine to it, barely noticeable. I'm rather pleased with it. Should have fun running this one soon.

Looks like one of the side rods is missing. I can help you with that. I kind of have a little thing for that there little locomotive...

Make sure you put a drop of oil on that whine..before it becomes a scream.

Holy magic smoke, Batman! Wow, and I thought my BL-2 and AMC Gremlin fetishs were deep. I'd be happy to buy a side rod off you if you have a spare, sir!

PM me your address Jerry. I'll throw one (or two if you are missing both sides) in the mail. I think I can spare it.
I am about the same way with the Bowser Challengers (~17 locomotives with 2 5-gal bins full)

the Mantua 0-4-0 & 0-6-0 sloped back switcher (25+ (all diecast version) locos with 1 5-gal bin stuffed full) I love to detail those like this one:

I detailed it with about 10+ brass castings and added directional lighting that I made from basic components purchased at Radio Shack and a diagram I found on line.
Must be a sickness... I suppose...

I'll have to dig it out and check, not sure if just one side or both are missing now. I've put it away in a box. I'll let you know, thanks!

Never had any myself Ken. Not sure where the box even came from.
Figured it was a good small parts box, but I had to remove it yesterday.
I had another Bowser Challenger with a Kemtron brass tender show up in the mail yesterday, so I had to make room. The sad part is... I bid on and purchased this lot yesterday too. It was too nice of a parts lot to pass on though. :

It has another Bowser Challenger and Kemtron brass tender in it.. as well as another T1 4-4-4-4. I have no room in my two bins of Challengers for another locomotive or tender. and my T-1 bin is almost full as well:

another nice lot you got there sean, unfortunately here in uk people would not sell job lots like that, they would list it as spare parts, one item at a time, saw one yesterday, the guy had removed the top off a freight car and listed as 2 lots,in my eyes a bit pathetic, ken

I have heard that request more than once..that's for sure. I'll keep you in mind nelson.
Actually, since she has seen how much I make on some of them, she has been on me to get a list together of some of the most valuable ones, such as my Penn Line Crusader. I agree... now to just find the time.

I do my best to only buy the big lots when I can. If I did not, I would never have gotten nearly what I have. I feel pretty lucky, that's for sure.
As for listing parts... I do all the time, but strictly for engines. ..and I only list certain parts at that. I have seen some listings like the one you mention and I have to completely agree. Quite pathetic.. What's worse, some people are too impatient and actually pay for them.

Hey, Sean, thanks for the two side rods for the steam chest; now, how do you pull the pin out of the driving wheel? The front big wheels on mine have a screw, but the back ones have a pin with round head, I've tried prying on it (gently), but it won't pop out. Is there a trick to getting them off so you can put the steam chest side rods on? Some loco's have a hex-head, so I assume those screw in, but mine are round. I had to file the holes inside the steam chests, the guide pin kept binding half-way in, if I turned it sideways, it would go in and out perfectly. Must have been some flashing inside. Used a small under-sized drill bit to file them down, worked ok, they now fit inside the hole and don't bind. Now if I can get that pin out of the rear wheels and install them, I'll be happy(er).

No, don't have much Varney steam stock to work with yet. I DO have a Casey Jones shell, the steam chests, and the bottom plate , but no drivers/side rods or motor for it (yet). Actually, I think I do have the wheels, but the zamac is cracking and splitting the rims, so they're junk. So I have that kit in a plastic bag somewhere, to try to find the rest of the parts sometime. Haven't done a docksider conversion as I don't have a spare one yet. I'll keep an eye out at shows for the junkers and parts pieces for Varneys.

Hi Jerry, Sorry, just saw this. It is not a pin. Looks like you have a rounded hex head screw. They should screw out. I could send you two new screws if you need them.

I have that engine (still ) sitting in front of my PC, I haven't done anything to it yet. I'll look at it tonight, and see if I have an E-Z out or some vicegrips that might work. I may need some screws, will let you know. Thanks for that input! Always helps to know the proper mechanical assembly used before attempting dis-assembly.

Well, I got home, and finally after watching part of the Daytona 500, I got out Lil Joe and looked at his drive rods. Got my miniature vice-grips, and gently twisted one of them CCW. What do ya know, it moves! Took it all the way out, yup it's threaded. But they aren't hex head, they are definitely formed round-head shoulder screws. I don't see any file marks , teeth marks, etc in them, so I think they came that way. Now I know how to unassemble it, I will attempt to put the final valve gear on it ( when I find that again, geez ). No telling where I put it, maybe upstairs on my test loop. I'll have to look for them now, they're in a plastic bag or container for sure.
