Hi,
Recently rebuild 2 alco 630 and they run..sometimes well but.... they more times then not start to studder. when I say rebuilt I mean pulled them all the way down to the armatures, replace wires, and cleaned cleaned cleaned! so they look really pretty and move but something is not right...
here some pics so you can sort of see what I am doing (BTW that holding tool is awesome just got it wednesday)
I decided to try the diode rear light that was desscribed in another post (works great and I know this is not the problem as the other train does not have this.

all pulled apart

putting back together clean and happy?

Ready for testing and new lighting installed

any thoughts?? and enjoy the pics!

I'm no expert but what I do when I get the motor down as you show I make sure I clean the back of the pick up plates. I also clean the 3 plates you show in picture # 2 on the arm. I use 1000 grit sand paper and make sure they are very clean.I also sand the brushes on both ends to be sure they are flat. it sounds to me you have a bad contact in the arm and the brushes OR oil on the arm or brushes.I always make sure I clean and clean clean. Hope this helps. Ken

Have the magnets come loose? I THINK they're glued in, and if one comes loose, it'll hit the armature going around, and slow it down, and cause....stammering. Anyway, the magnets should be securely glued into the motor housing shell,I believe, so check on that to see if one is floating , if so, reglue it back into place. They should not rock or wiggle any.
