Hi Guys:

Can anyone identify this Loco? It says Bachmann - Hong Kong on the bottom but I can't find anything about it online! I'm primarily interested in what prototype it was based on?

Thanks,
Gareth

Hi Romcat. The engine is a model of a Camelback style engine. Many railroads used this type of engine. The Bachmann model is based on the CNJ engine.

Central Railroad of New Jersey operated camelback 0-8-0 switchers - a locomotive configuration that placed the cab in the middle of the engine, next to the boiler and in front of the extra-wide firebox. (C. W. Witbeck)

Camelback Style Engines were discontinued due to injuries to the engineer and Fireman, when Main shafts would come off and go though the cab.

Here is a website with information on Camelbacks.

Hi:

Works for me. With the help of some Bachmann freaks we concluded that it is a really nice Kitbash of a Bachmann Spectrum 2-8-0 Consolidation.

It pretty much had to be one of D&H, CNJ, LV or a few others as they were the Athracite roads. Your picture is the closest I've seen to my model which in my picture is missing the pilot wheels because of a crack in the axle mount.

Actually if it's truly a Kitbash then I like it even more since it's a one of a kind!

Cheers,
Gareth

Hey Gareth,

Mehano also made a model of a 2-6-0 camelback steam locomotive for a President's Choice train set back in the late 90's.

* It is Reading body. The one for the I10 rear cab 2-8-0. The loco has been kitbashed. How about a better photo. Reading's last camelback 2-8-0 was the I8. I think.
