New to the forum, glad to find this great place to talk Tyco!

Found my old Tyco Chattanooga in the parents attic along with some old Lionel from my young days. Got the Tyco running after a small amount of tinkering but now its skipping and running very slow (not like she used too run).
I have tried cleaning gears and lubing and its running on a new track. Any ideas of what holding her back?

Hi, Greg, welcome to the Tyco Forum. Er, how MUCH lubing did you do? Hopefully only a drop on the bearing side. Oil will cause problems if you used too much, and it flings it into places where it can cause more harm than good. Or onto the brushes. It is squalling, or just running slow? You could also have the driver rods out of sync, sometimes they slip on the axles, and it causes binding I think. Others here are more familiar with the old steam Chat than I am ( or is this the diesel chattanooga?). I have one ( just bought a few months ago, never been run though), but haven't run it much, more of a box queen at the moment. At least yours is running, so that's a good sign. I'll let some of the more experienced Chat'ers chime in.
Did you check the wheels for grunge? Could have gunked up and be making bad contact. A thorough cleaning of the wheels is always a good idea ( but NO steel wool! ) Green scrubby pads are a good solution if you have any. Don't use them on the rubber traction tires though.

AMC, Thanks, great to find you. I am running with rubber dental bands on wheels but its not that. Ran wires to train and it still does it. I dropped one drop on each gear but thats all after i cleaned them.
Also cleaned metal tires with goo gone.

Not sure what to do, getting mad at my old tyco...

In my experience slipping is usually caused by debris. It is either wound around a gear stud and occasionally binds, or is somehow affecting the armature itself. I'm even more inclined to suspect excess crud since you say it is slow besides.

Lubrication is a start, but I'd remove all the parts and inspect and clean them first. It's usually not to hard to do. I wrote a comprehensive guide to this not long ago, you can find it on my website.

Hope that helps....

That link linked! I was reading about the weak magnets and i can say that mine did fall out along with the springs but the armature I didnt try to remove. Was afraid to to do this.

Is my motor toast?

Hmm.... maybe not toast but definitely a soggy pancake. That slowness is pretty much what you can expect if the magnets fell out: it will still run, but poorly. If they fell out themselves then I'd say it's likely that the motor got too hot and did other damage to the armature anyhow.

So I would say a transplant is in your future... however, if your existing one still runs I would still try and coax what you can in the meanwhile. A weak motor like this one is good practice so that you don't mess up a good one in the future. So, it might run slow, but it shouldn't "slip" unless that is due to a fried pole in the armature - in which case the slipping would be consistent and rhythmic. If the slipping is random, you have some other issue.

I have read all you posts. If you could sen me a picture of the parts you need I would be glad to send them to you. n/c I find these pancake engines can be fun to get going right. It takes time and patiences. I love them I take my time and give them a good cleaning. I first take the motor completely apart. Then I take the block and gears and wash them good in the laundry tub. I use an old tooth brush with dish soap and make sure I get all the crud off. Then I blow it dry with my air brush. Then I check the brushes and if they are long enough I use 600 grit sand paper and make sure the are flat it dose not take much. Then I check the springs to make sure they are the same size. if everything now is fine I put it together. To get the brushes and springs in with little trouble I put the end plate on first then I install the brushes and the springs. With these lined up I install the brass power plates with care. One drop of oil on each end of the drive shaft and it should run like a charm. I have redone about 12 of these engines and never had one not work right. If you need any more info contact me.
