I thought Lionel was the only one with exploding box cars. Apparently not. Not sure who would have copied that car. Marx, maybe?

EDIT 11:39 AM - Ah, it's a Tri-ang version! See this web address. Overseas copy :

Ken when I look at the two I see the same car with different lettering. Only difference is the ladder on one side.

well, I'm just an internet troller, no expert on the manufacturing end. Since the Tri-ang version says Warhead, and not Explosive, that's who SOLD it, who made it, I have no idea. With the hook-n-loop couplers that's usually European makes. There seems to be no documention on HOseekers site for Mehano, who made items for other companies. That would probably fill in the gaps in knowledge if we knew what they made for whom, but who knows if that knowledge will ever become available. All I can do is find out who sold it under their own name, not who made it, except for finding others who might know. And I learn more each day.

Microbuss,

The car I'm thinking about is the car where the sides fold down to expose 2 anti-aircraft guns inside.

Cox-> AHM -> Model Power

The same might be true of the exploding sides car that Model Power has, don't know off the top of my head on that one.

Tri-ang also produced copies of the Lionel operating helicopter car and circus car with the giraffe.

That car is in the Lionel HO book, but even they're not sure what the story is on it other than everything but the sides are from Lionel dies, or exact copies thereof. The trucks and couplers on this one suggest Tri-Ang though.

Lionel made their version, it's from the Hobbyline dies they picked up about 1958 to start making their own trains (along with some English dies for the FA and 4-6-2/2-8-2).
